There's also a "fake bow" trick, where you would take one strip of ribbon, tie a knot but leave it loose. Then take a small piece of ribbon by it self, slip it into the hole of this knot, then pull the knot tight. The middle "knot" plus the ribbon strings are all patterned and it lays low too. Not too bulky.
