Today, someone just casually mentioned Bluebeard's Castle to me. I never heard of it, to be honest.
Now, I'm completely speachless. I just watched the entire opera, with an English version of the libretto just a click away. Wonderful.
I'm not a great lover of opera, but the singing was really marvellous. What a setting. And most of all: the story... I'm not sure yet what to think of it, but it got me thinking, and that's the best an opera or any other work of art can do, isn't it?
While the story is complex on a psychosexual level, it can be described as the conflict between a female's desire for intimacy and a male's desire for privacy. Among other things! Always been a favortie of mine. And Bartok's music is wild and otherworldly...
wonderful in every way. totally authentic in perfect Hungarian with two great dramatic singers. Solti 's conducting probes the depths. Visually extraordinary and striking.
"an actual film adaptation of Berg's opera done with Toni Blankenheim, Sena Jurinac, and Bruno Maderna that was only available in Japan for a number of years." Ahhhh... that's a different one, then. BTW, I mean to write, "rotating box."
"a really great film version of Alban Berg's opera of similar titles made available from the ArtHaus label"
The Dale Dusing one? I didn't like the artsy staging very much - that roting box between acts. I would have preferred a more conventional approach. The Herzog movie is pretty good.

What the hell? Where's my sixth door? That has some of my favorite music in the entire friggin' opera!
Okay, back to the seventh door. Where'd Judith get the cloak and crown from? But other than that, it was a great way to end one of the best opera productions I've seen period. :D
The Lake of Tears? I played this for my little son, once. He couldn't remember it very well, but he did recall the "Sad Pond." I've called it that ever since.
HerrWozzeck, huh? Have you seen the Herzog film adaptation of Woyzeck?
No, I haven't seen the Herzog film version of Woyzeck. There is, however, a really great film version of Alban Berg's opera of similar titles made available from the ArtHaus label that I own and cherish. :D
Whoever staged this knew Götz Friedrich's Parsifal a tad too well...

A rich and gorgeous score. Fantastic theater-piece. Thank you so for making it available. Well-known enough, but imho, not enough!

@HerrWozzeck Bluebeard was supposed to have gotten that stuff from behind the third door, the treasury, and then put it on her.
