fuck, fuck, fuuuuuuuck!!!!!! a pure talent, beautiful spirit, and friendship gets destroyed by fucking corporate New York scumbag, a pig in a fucking suit. But fuck it Badfinger are the winners in any case cause their music lives on and that is something nobody can touch, steal, betray, backstab or take away from them.I just wish Pete and Tom were here with us today.
I love when Tom sings the vocal at the end. He should have sang the whole song. His voice is amazing.
There is no doubt that Pete Ham was the lead guitar player for the band. If you look at each song and count who plays lead and who plays rhythm, you'll find Pete played lead on way more songs. Plus, as Mike Gibbins once said, he could absolutely play circles around Joey. And that is saying something because Joey was a hell of a guitar player.
I think Badfinger let Joey Molland call himself the "lead guitar" player, just to make him feel better. This song and many others showcase the true"lead guitar" player of Badfinger, that guitarist being the extremely gifted, incredibly talented, Peter William Ham.
@BandOnTheRun87 - I have the same question. Where's Pete's famous SG given to him by George Harrison? That was his signature guitar. He seemed to use it on almost all his performances and recordings. Joey looks like he's using a red SG like Pete's. I wonder if they just switched guitars for this MS performance?
Tommy Evans had such a rocking voice. He always gets a lot of credit for being a songwriter, but if you look at Badfinger's catalog he wrote much fewer songs than Ham and Molland (although the songs he did write were excellent). I just wish we could have seen him sing lead more often. He has a great stage presence. Really, all of them do.
I Agree. I think they were so much into their music, that money wasn't as big of a factor as we would think. Bad management doomed our Greatest band ever.
It's so sad that they can't make music like this these days. The commercial corporations are ensuring that the youth remain brain dead to suit their "market purposes". I am glad that youtube is giving younger folk access to these great bands.
yeah, all young music fans should get a chance to see music made by bands such as badfinger, you only have to ask young people like nezmacadam on the badfinger postings,
Seems like just yesterday that I played this on the air for a week without saying who it was.The calls were unreal everyone thought the song was by The Beatles and with Badfinger being on Apple this only added to the mystique. The studio cut is what Ive been talking about.Great band that transcended from The Iveys to Badfinger or as I used to call them the baby beatles.
I wish I had the chance to see Badfinger--with Pete Ham and Tom Evans--live...I've seen the version where it's more like Joey Molland playing Pete Ham and Tom Evans songs, but I wish I could seen the full band (with Mike Gibbins too, of course) live!
Also, I wish the Midnight Special was still on so I could actually see some great live performances like this on TV!
Joey doesn't get enough credit, probably because he's screwed up repeatedly by munging remasters etc. However, I saw Badfinger at the Roxy in 1979 ("Airwaves" era) and they were great!
All the original members of the band were really excellent musicians, singers, and songwriters. Pete's probably the best of 'em, but ya gotta give credit to the whole band for all the wonderful harmony singing.
i dont think there is any probability about who the main man was in this band, pete ham is way out in front, but you maybe right , joey molland does tend to get left behind, badfinger were never going to be the same after pete went,
My gosh! I am stunned! Unbelieveable performance on everyone's part. Pete Ham, talent like nobody's business. Wish you guys were still around. Thanks for posting Chevy
First time I plyed this was in the early seventies. The phones were looking like strobe lights. This along with Jackie Lomax sour milk sea really had the Harrison influence great song beggin to be re -released Also somebody needs to recut Poco,s Pickin up the pieces from 1969.With the fusion of country and rock this would be an out and out smash!!!!!miketheshanmanmangan
God! Why does it seem like only a matter of time before the world recognizes what a talent we lost in Pete Ham. He's playing lead, a slide with Wah-Wah impeccably, with feeling, hooks and melody, taking a mundane riff of a song and creating magic! The version on Straight Up is fantastic, too.
This song completely fuckin jams, how wasn't this another top 10 record for the Badfinger boys??? Also, how in the fuck could Pete write any good music with aLL THE SHIT SWIRLIN AROUND HIM??? His house in foreclosure? His wife pregnant? No cash coming in? Badfinger taking out all the shit on each other because of their cocksucking embezzling manager??? Lennon and McCartney couldn't write under all these pressures!!! Pete, i'm sure we missed your best. Also, Dixe (Baby Blue) where are you???

@smilinstevie88 Joey had an sg of his own.

@wwekane2468 Yep. Different version. P90 pickups (instead of Pete's humbuckers) and no vibrato tail (as Pete's had)

Ironically, "Suitcase" was written by Joey.

how often did pete play a les paul?
BandOnTheRun87 3 years ago
If you had your eyes closed you might think this was Cream, upon first hearing it.
If the song had been around earlier, it would have fit in Cream's repitoire nicely, IMHO.
Clapton and Bruce could share lead vocals just as Molland and Evans do here.
Not to downplay this performance. It is smoking hot in every way.
