  • This is so fucking cool!

  • Simple, understated, not over the top, and it's cool to hear Billy Joel's signature vocalization on this song.

  • This is not Auto tune this is just how he sings I love it its so unique

  • Nice Autotune-Demo. Check out the synthetic vibrato and. Great! Sounds Like a voice from the Commodore 64. ;)

  • auto tune... wtf

  • What's this song called?

  • Birri Joerra handes!

  • 12 people are communists

  • the only piano ive ever seen with sparkley keys other than little richards

  • @caulinrocker1 I don't think they were sparkly. It was raining at the time. It was probably just water.

  • @TheT4xid3rmist yeah ... i didnt notice the rain droplets on the camera lense at the begining

  • Horrific sounding. Billy is totally capable of delivering a great performance without Autocrap.

  • @africkinamerican I know it's disgusting. He didn't even know they were gonna do that. They didn't have permission.

  • @LuciusTavington I know but did they get away with it. I mean, once Billy hears that hes being auto-tuned its not like he can stop. Jeezzz that could be damaging to ones career.

  • The Japanese took over our Super Bowl?!

  • Playing on a wet piano is almost impossible... For those of you that don't know... this is a great performance considering the weather!

  • Nobody else sings like Billy Joel. Love him!

  • I would much rather listen to someone who is a bit flat or sharp than this bullshit! Pitch correction should be used in a studio or very subtly in a live situation. Whoever engineered that should be sacked, hired and then sacked again!

  • Why in the world did they auto-tune his mic??? Whenever he says See at the beginning it's all messed up and through out the whole thing it's just messed up..I mean, he did a FANTASTIC job but there were those times that I could hear the auto tune bad...and I was like what the heck? And I really like it because he didn't add anything...he just freakin' sang the song...I get sick of people making it some big opportunity to show people how many notes you can hit.

  • @2maninthemirror Oh man it's like you said what I planned on saying. That is, I love Billy and more so after this because like you observed 2man, he didn't add a single bullshit trill, didn't jazz it up and all that crap that so many idiot singers do. He just sang the damn thing, under tough circumstances. Straight ahead. That's the way it should be done and he did it, without a functioning monitor yet. Two thumbs up Billy! Look up Marc Anthony's rendition. Like Billy he sang it straight&great!

  • oh Billy

  • Christina auguilara SUCKED.

what happened to amazing artists like billy joel?

  • @Whatchasay23 auguilara butchered it for sure billy did it justice. they should get him to do this for every super bowl until he physically can't do it any more.

  • @deathjoker666 Agreed.

  • @deathjoker666 Amen to that! His voice is just so becoming...Soooo good :)

  • @Whatchasay23 billy autotuned joel. duh! listen to it

  • @100stacy WHAT????!!! Are you tone deaf or something? Christina Aguilara butchered a highly respected song. She didn't get the lyrics right and she can't hold a note. She was flat and she screamed the song instead of singing the song. I know of a 9 year old in Chesapeake Virginia that can do far better than Aguilara could ever aspire to do.

  • @roadmax She did not butcher the song. If you want to talk about butchering, talk about Lea Michele's song at the super bowl. Christina didn't make me gasp for joy, but considering the extreme pressure on her, she did a lot better than some! You are wrong. There is no way you know a 9 year old that can do better than Aguilara.

  • this is how the anthem should be sang. Just straight. Too many artists disrespect the anthem

  • i am a former Marine....and I LOVE that the audience raises hell whenever a video feed of the troops is shown in the stadium!

    Semper Fi!

  • Xtina was better

  • They should let him perform at the halftime of a Super Bowl.Maybe even with Elton. Now that would be killer!!

  • i think hes done this twice for the Superbowl.

  • @MrMatto91 yeah your right super bowl 23

  • baba boey.

  • Billy talked about this performance on Howard Stern today. The TV produce auto-tuned his mic without him knowing. Good to know the truth.

  • @DavidGoodfootNoonan, funny, i heard that on Howard and instantly looked for it on Youtube also!

  • Thanks to Howard Stern we hear the truth...During soundcheck, Billy has his monitor working. During live broadcast TV people forget to turn the monitor on, damn, then someone in 'Creative' decides to turn on auto-tune. Billy the consummate professional actually makes it bearable.

  • @TheChasterBlaster - what a great interview with Howard. You can see Billy's dissappointment as he begins to play and slighty shakes his head - indicative of his account to this story. BILLY IS THE BEST.

  • morons, this is a fine version

  • If Mr.Joel is using autotune, here, I doubt it's at HIS request - something people here are failing to understand. Either way, if Freddie Mercury were autotuned, would that make him any less talented? I don't think so.

  • Check out Jetvane55 Billy Joel at Tokyo Dome. Any song will do you, for all those insulting BJ's integrity. Recorded just last year. As I said before, those waffling on about autotuning etc are obvioulsy not familiar with Billy, his work & his vocal abilities. evaengineer 'should have kept your voice in shape'??? The guy is 60 years old & still sings like this, magnificently! What more do you want???

  • This was best super bowl ever!! I mean 4 fumble in frist quater and devin hester return that kick off to td THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE

  • What game is this?

  • @lakelandchief this is americanfootball final ''super bowl''

  • I chew gum during the national anthem, you get lost,Black.

  • @akunesendai that's more than your country is worth

  • @3rdPR It is unrelated whether it is worth. I think I vary from country to country.

But I think during the your national anthem people there only thought better having a chew of gum of showing deference to the national anthem. Because people in other countries do not have a chew of gum during this one.It doesn't say any more if said that it is USA.

  • Billy did a great job.

  • I am going to fuck up who-ever fucked with BJs voice. 'Tone corrector'? More like 'tone destroyer'.

  • They aired this in Asia??????? Oh well, 2 years later I saw Billy Joel here live in concert in Indianapolis with Elton John, was pretty amazing. GO COLTS!! And that is NOT autotune. He's old, give him a break.

  • @Allibob2012 LMFAO YES IT IS AUTOTUNE. Theres nothing wrong with it, but is most certainly is autotune

  • i said to myself, "if anyone won't butcher the national anthem by putting 25 notes where there should be 1, it's him." and i'm happy to say i was right.

  • I saw him perform this when it aired live on American television, and there was absolutely no evidence of auto-tune being used. It was not without its flaws - which Billy himself later admitted - and we heard it, scars & all. If there's auto-tune being used here, as some of you claim, then it was added after the fact for this Japanese broadcast.

  • Aye hop off the mans dick. He's obviously proved to the world a milliontimes over he can sing. Look at any of his live proformances.

  • The best rendition of the National Anthem ever!!! Billy does it justice!!

  • Billy Joel is a legend, only a fool would think he uses or even needs autotune.

  • @kcdude7 Billy Joel does not need auto-tune. He is an amazing vocalist. You are indeed correct. But for some reason, it was used here. Auto-Tune is very noticeable in his voice, especially if you have worked with the effect in the studio. Notice it on words like "see," "by," "last," "broad," "through," "perilous fight," "were," "bursting," "night," "flag," "there," "say," and "of," which sound very artificial.

  • this ain't autotune, you can't hear this jumps between notes that are hearable for example when t-pain or lil wayne sing.

  • @terielon This is pretty much as blatantly autotuned as it can be without doing it "just for the effect". Or maybe he was doing it just for the effect, who knows...

  • @uckiz I doubt it. If he was doing it just for the effect, he would haven't have used the setting he did. Let me explain this as best I can. If he wanted the effect, he would have made the correction speed faster, or his voice would have been auto-tuned instantly, instead of quickly. This type of auto-tune is done to hide imperfections in a vocal. Also, he probably would have made the correction window smaller, so the effect would've been more noticeable and removed his natural sounding vibrato.

  • @terielon There are so many settings for a vocoder / autotuner and it also depends on the individual's vocal control. The singer might not need so much intervention if s/he can minimise the 'off notes'. I think he used one here.

  • @terielon Actually, you can, you're not listening closely enough

  • 100% Auto-Tuned.

    Typical.

And just a tip for anyone that finds it difficult to differenciate.. Think.. Could a human ever .. Ever, make that sound naturally, and change notes faster than humanly possible?

.. The answer is no =\

  • He used auto tune? It sounds like him to me. =/

  • Haha, that is auto-tuned big time

  • That is Marlee Matlin, The Famous Deaf Actress Of The L Word & Children Of A Lesser God Fame in particular, she's a very good friend of Billy's, they appeared on Sesame Street Together, perfoming Just The Way You Are, She's Signing in American Sign Language (ASL) the national anthem, that is what she was doing !

  • jeah t-pain could have done it too :-D

    i love billy anyway!

  • when you sing in a stadium there is echo so you have to sing differently...

    Billy Joel doesn't need autotune...lol

  • What the fuck is that women doing? This is just tacky.

  • @Nimnoms That is MARLEE MATLIN, A Deaf Actress Famous for her leading roles in the Film CHILDEN OF A LESSER GOD & THE L WORD TV SERIES ! She's a good friend of Billy's she's seen here signing using ASL. American Sign Language, the National Anthem Of America.

  • it's totally autotune. Shame on you Billy Joel. You are better.

  • lol Fail @ :48 to :50

  • The only football player even paying attention to the National Anthem was Jeff Saturday and he was singing along. I was glad to see the Colts win afterall I am from Indy. I am a true Colts fan all the way.

  • Do you reckon the footballers are artificially enhanced too?

  • LOL @ the lady doing the pledge of allegiance.

  • awh the colts and the bears

    bears were so close :(

  • pretty sure they made him do the autotune. but IDK

  • Oh no Billy! What have you done? You should have kept your voice in shape... autotuning's for talentless hacks, not you!

  • @evaengineer when did he use an autotuner?

  • @rhslinebacker33

    lol are you kidding? :P

  • @uckiz no, I've got all his albums, that's just how his voice has changed the older he has gotten

  • @evaengineer Hey faggot. I hope u know that about 90% of artists use it in the studio. Ever think of that? =]]

  • @JohnnyPartain Hey, asshole, you've got to be wrong sometimes.

  • @evaengineer Huh?

  • @JohnnyPartain No need to call anyone a faggot.

Anyway, you must realise that just because 90% of artists use it in your head doesnt make it better. If you were right with the figure, which you arent by the way, then that would mean there is less talent out there then we like to believe.

  • @LeBobBob LOL. Alright. So your gonna sit here and tell me that no pitch correction software is used in the studio now days?

  • @JohnnyPartain No, why would I say that?

Of course it is used however you are clearly sensationalising in an attempt to improve your argument with a figure of "90 percent of all artists" using it. The number of artists who use autotune and Melodyne in the way that Mr. Joel experienced is really very low. Also just to be clear they are using it in what most would consider a bad way. As a correction tool yes its used more wide spread but that would be for the odd missed note, not the whole song.

  • @LeBobBob Mr. LeBobBob your pissing me off. It seems as if you know what your talking about, but its obvious you don't. Im gonna stop this argument now, and just say that the reason the retune speed is so fast on Mr. Joel, is probably because he can't sing anymore. And theres nothing wrong with that. He was a good singer in his day.

  • @JohnnyPartain I had a feeling you would say something like that. Call a coward up on his argument and you will see why he's a coward.

  • @JohnnyPartain and at what point does a person loose their ability to sing in key? Does age do this? It seems, you haven't a clue.

  • @ultimateinfinite It's not age as much as hearing loss. If you can't hear yourself, you can't sing in tune. If they forgot to turn on the monitor, as Billy said they did, he couldn't possibly have heard what notes he was singing over the crowd noise. If he hadn't been playing the piano, he could have stuck a finger in his ear. But with both hands busy, he did the best he could. Shame on the asshat that chose to autotune him without permission.

  • @tdelamont Yeah, I was commenting on that bloke's comment. They were rhetorical questions really because I already knew the answers. If your monitor engineer is a spack then you will perform like a spack, I know this, I have seen it.

  • @JohnnyPartain and that makes it acceptable? you fucking wanker

  • @evaengineer sorry this comment is a bit late :) but maybe they put auto tune on because the wanted it to sound formal and perfect if you know what i mean :)

  • @evaengineer He didn't, it was the stupid TV producers that did it.

  • 1:15 It would have been ironic if they had a robot doing the sign language.

  • I'd fuck that chick in a heartbeat.

  • Why did Billy Joel use an autotuner? Isn't he like a really talented singer on his own???

  • He didn't use a freaking autotuner...that's ridiculous...he had one bad note at the beginning trying to warm into the song. This man is one of the greatest live performers ever. Don't even try to tell me he needs something to keep him in tune...no way!

  • although his voice is sounding somewhat robotic, usually autotune has a sharper legato. i don't know what to believe

  • @hooptron 1:22 - 1:25 robotic, but he admited he used it, he doesnt care but... go ahead and prove us wrong, even though he said so him self

  • @colbythebomb didn't know he said it...i'm surprised.

  • @hooptron ya i was too, i mean his voice is brilliant

  • i remember watching this on tv!

  • bummer... like the loudness wars, autotune is ruining music but in a more obvious & annoying way

  • man I would BANG the SHIT out of the deaf signing girl.

  • agreed

  • she looks like she has a hell of a rack under that red shirt.

  • agreed

  • go Billy Joel

  • It may have been less noticeable if they had the retune speed set lower. That is painful to listen to. He crapped on the national Anthem as not being a very good song in a press conference before his performance. Maybe someone behind the scenes was upset about him insulting the anthem and got some payback!!

  • the most damning evidence of auto-tune: 0:36 - the dawn's ear-ly light. I have never ever EVER heard an American sing the -ly in early as a natural fourth. even people who have never had musical training know how to sing that note, as a leading tone to the fifth. billy joel is a consumate musician too, there's no way in hell he sang that note. sorry rog turner, but what we have here is a case of auto-tune disgracing our national anthem and I think it's rather obvious

  • Well it is possible that he just didn't sing the right note. But I do think you're right. And it's really stupid of him to have used something that stops him from singing out of key in a piece where he's supposed to sing a note that isn't in the scale.

  • I cant believe there is even any debate over this! Cher never used so much autotune as Billy is using for this performance !

  • Just a couple of points here about this performance and Autotune. If he was using Autotune then I say you can hardly hear it. Billy can sing in tune as he has proved for decades before pitch correction was dreamed up. If he was, then for a guy of 60-something with probably no foldback on the Superbowl stage then I say he has an excuse. What I find inexcusable is the terrible sound that Michael Buble and co make. Just imagine what Johnny Cash would sound like compressed and pitch-corrected. Ugh!

  • dude, are you deaf? the autotune is obvious as it trills between the half steps. first one is on the word SEE, small one at :41 (proudly) 1:17 thru 1:21 is obvious. Another at 1:42 (yet) Not to mention the PITCH is spot on. Most people can't sing that perfect on key.

  • If you can hardly hear the autotuning, then you have no right to EVER offer a comment on music.

  • You can hear some of the mess ups that the auto tone made in the beginning

  • i love how the crowd cheers when the troops come on

  • Wow IDK if Anyone could tell, But Im Pretty sure Billy Joel was using Auto-tune.

    Just like Samsukkaa was sayin!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow this is very sad billy :(

  • You can tell he's using Auto Tune!

  • ok whats wit all the flat in his notes. does he always sound like this? no wonder ive never heard him before this.

  • *epic facepalm* You're that clueless too huh?

  • i dont mean to be rude or anything

    but who is he?

    ive never heard of him

  • Billy Joel? Wow...your parents sucked that much huh? If you're that void of culture that you've never heard of Billy Joel, there's pretty much nothing I can say to you. You're on the internet though, try looking it up...trust me, he's there. He's only been performing for the last 40 years or so.

  • right

dont say my parents suck cause i dont know who someone is :s thats pretty fucked up :|

and i didnt mean to offend,

    is he an american star?

    im not from america.

  • I almost apologized for it, but after thinking about it, I stick to my original comment. The fact that your name represents that of LadyGaga kind of shows where your cultural priorities are. You're steeped in modern pop music hell and when you're not even aware of a musical legend the likes of Billy Joel, that's kind of sad. You may as well have asked who was Michael Jackson (American), or Elton John (not American). You have to really try to have never heard of one of these, and that's just sad.

  • the fact is...ive not heard of someone.

    get over it.

and the worst thing about this is, you couldve just told me who he was, instead of being rude.

wow....your parents sucked that much huh? that they couldnt teach you manners?

  • No my parents taught me about life. I reserve manners for those who deserve it and haven't remained willfully ignorant to the world. I have nothing but contempt for people like you not because you don't know who Billy Joel is (not at all), but because by not knowing such an iconic figure it tells leagues about you as a person. You could've simply gone to wikipedia without asking a public forum and avoided the embarrassment but having to do that would've been so much I guess.

  • if you read the first comment she said "i don't mean to be rude" she asked a question. there was no need to be go off. would you do that in real life? i doubt it. be careful who speak to in that tone.

  • It doesn't matter if she meant to be rude. She didn't have to ask what she knew was a dumb question in a public forum when she could have just as easily googled the name and figured it out on her own. It would've become quite clear that Billy Joel is a living legend across the world, and could have saved herself the embarrassment. She chose not to. And to answer your question, yes I would've responded exactly the same face to face, parents suck and all, because that's the truth of the matter.

  • do YOU know who LAURENCE ASHDOWN IS??

  • Sure don't there skippy. Has he been performing on world wide stages to sold out crowds for forty years? Unless not, then he's not even close to being a good comparison to Billy Joel. Furthermore, it's a moot point because I did not show up in a video blog of Laurence performing during the most watched sporting even in the entire world asking people who he is without bothering to look it up first. So, take what's left of whatever point you were trying to make, and stick it up your ass. K?

  • .....dont cry

  • Ain't nobody crying buy you homie. Now go away.

  • dont call me homie homo

  • Fine...ain't nobody crying but you bitch. NOW..go away.

  • Don't listen to Biggest of Daddies, he's a jerk.

    Yes, Billy Joel is American.

  • @LilyGaga1 Yes he is an American star. :-)

  • @LilyGaga1 that shouldn't matter, Billy Joel is an international star....Even in Russia, that says a lot.

  • LilyGaga: you're a moron.

  • greatest artist to ever walk the earth! GO BILLY JOEL

  • Billy himself said he couldn't hear the music in his earphones. when you can't hear anything and you have 50,000 fans screaming you're not going to hit every note on key. This is a great passionate performance. A better national anthem by Billy was at the Yankee World Series game. check that out. It blows this away but this is still good.

  • no auto tune here. listen at 1:40 'banner yet wave'... the sliding from pitch to pitch wouldn't be allowed by the auto-tune. The beginning issues are simply the tv sound techs adjusting the mix by limiting the amount of stadium reverb. That gets corrected within a couple measures after he starts singing and is fine for the rest of the anthem. Just thought I'd chime in on this.

  • Umm, the amount of auto tune on his vocals here are incredibly obvious. The pitch correct speed is really incredibly high

  • Haha, obviously you dont know anything about auto-tune, it can bypass notes.

  • Ok, first off Billy Joel Said himself that he has never used auto-tone, and whether you believe it or not, that IS his voice. I love how just because it sounds good, people expect the worst and try to find a flaw with it.

Also, during National Anthems in a stadium or super bowl, its extremely difficult to sing a song, due to all the echo, so auto tone doesn't destroy the music industry (in that retrospect, but i agree with it being poorly used for pop songs)

    Anyways, bravo Billy, great job.

  • LOL, people aren't saying he was using auto-tune because it sounded good!

The over use of auto-tune is what made it sound bad! It's blatantly obvious. Once you've used auto-tune and understand how it works, you will be able to hear when it's being used... and it was used.

  • Exaktly. A flagrant auto-tune fail. Calibration anyone?

  • @Silence04 , he does not use auto tune. If you follow Billy's interviews you would know his voice is 'rubbery' as he states. He has the capabilities to slide up an octave easily with out any enhancements.

  • Dude, Billy is amazing but this is the most obvious use of autotune I've ever heard. In fact, that's the reason I looked up this video, just to show my friends the use of autotune live. It's okay to admit it. He used autotune.

  • this is amazing and it feels very patriotic

    be proud

  • I love Billy Joel. He is an amazing song writer and puts his heart and soul into everything that he writes. He does not sing with a classical technique and that is alright. Don't listen for the flaws, listen for the beauty. Otherwise, you will have missed the point.

  • Excellent point you made Matt. Don't listen for flaws, listen for beauty. That's what I did and I loved his rendition. No fancy ornaments or trills. Billy sang it proper like. Fantastic job Maestro Joel

  • Billy Joel FTW!

  • it wasn't THAT bad. whoever was doing the settings for it just set it to correct too fast. i have module that does this live, would have sounded better with more of a delay on the pitch correction.

  • look, billy joel still sounds better than this in his concerts. There was clearly a technical problem, which led to the SOUND ENGINEERS using auto tune, not Joel.

  • So we're all on the same page here:

    watch?v=IBaXwRQQciI

  • OMFG! Auto-tune!!! Sad day for live music, interesting day for political irony.

  • BILLY!!!!!!! I would have easily gone to this crazy sport that I am not a fan of just to see BILLY JOEL

    :D

  • Incidently Billy Joel said the national anthem was rubbish and that he'd have rather have sung "America the beautiful"

  • Using auto-tune is like spitting on an national anthem...

  • um no, it just shows that you care enough about our country that you want to make the national anthem sound good.

  • by making it sound fake? The auto-tune makes it worse because certain notes aren't supposed to be perfectly on center pitch within the context of the chord. Besides, if someone is good enough to sing at the super bowl they are good enough to know how to sing in-tune one their own.

  • so sick!

  • I actually thought this was terrific

  • Grow some ears

  • I really didnt think it was that bad imo!

  • how the hell can u say that?

  • Because I have heard alot worse! thats why I can say that. There will never be another Whitney! so lets move on
