Karen adds some new insights into Paul Simon songs. Her version of "Still Crazy After All these years" sounds crazy, it works a little better for her, and that is why it is on the album. Both produced by Paul Simon's producer of course - Phil Ramone!
This is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever listened to. It should have been released. Thank God for Youtube. I feel so lucky and blessed to have access to Karen's unreleased songs that are better then anything on the radio today.
@amanda3685 Why do you think so? The solo album was not good for her voice: the kind of music was ordinary, her voice was too high and the success was poor. Do you think, that the solo album is better than the Carpenters albums? I miss the specials in her voice.
@amanda3685 I have read the biography, too. Actually, there was already a solo album: Christmas Portrait. It was while Richard was in a rehabilitation clinic. I think, Richard and A & M were right: all though,t that album was bad. Karen is singing too high and the music (Discotstyle) was not a good choice for her talent.
wrong I loved Karen Carprnter and still idolize her.
I was not joking but then I do agree with you NOW AFTER SEEING THINGS DIFFERENTLY, AND SEEING THAT SHE DID SEEM TO HAVE NEED TO VENTURE OUT AND FIND HER OWN INDIVIDUALITY, WHO CAN BLAME HER FOR THAT. TY.
@sandrasandiford1 It was a team effort, Richards contributions were essential as Karen's vocals were. People who say negative things about Richard basically are talking with there head so far up their ass they can't pull it out. Richard Carpenter is a great man, who Loved his sister & know the proper vein that the music should be in. Great comment Thank you
This sounds somewhat "Beatlesque." It does not sound like Richard, nor should it. The whole point of her doing her own album was to escape from under his thumb.
pretty. I need more times to hear to it to make it a favorite. the solo recordings just don't sound like Richard. thank you Howard Banister for posting a rare gem.
This may sound dumb. I love Karen so much that when I saw that she had a solo album that didn't make that much of an impact, I said: "I wanna get that album!"
Anybody know the name of the album? Year? I know it was produced by Phil Ramone but nohing else I know. Thank you! Karen sounds awesome here and always!
KC, I know you were trying to reach out with this song- - for that hidden some one, guess who, but now is too late..Oh, so painful! What a true tragedy, ugh, but the music remains superb.
That voice was still available for her use, but she really was restricted in singing a certain way-- in her more famous group endeavors. Here, she was able show a different range, just like she wanted to.
THANKYOU LoveHowardBanister My God... what a find !! I have spent all arvo listening to these GEMS ! Perhaps dated in style but still Karens Magnificent vocals!! IF only Rich could release them just as they R !! So tremendous... we will never forget the pleasure she bestowed to our lives... She is greatly missed.. Pls find some more belonging to those sessions... best rgds.. Australia
She was grandiose! Why did she leave us so quickly? Life is unfair! Fortunately there are still her songs that I listen over and over again all the time!
@vmuto1 I still feel like crying when I think of all the wonderful people my generation lost. It seems impossible to discuss with people what is happening..ie power mongering, greed, elimination of the competition, people wanting to be written in to the history books, Satan, ect... I was a little kid when people dedicated themselves to me, then others doped me, threatened me and my family to get me to say this or do that... I wish I could talk to peolpe about the truth in my life
Richard Carpenter pushed her too far, when she tried to move on her own, he stepped on her. he said that her solo album was trash, now he says that is gold, wow, well done. She deserved better.
Richard was a self-styled orchestrator and arranger, and couldn't dream of letting Karen go off and work without him. Sometimes
I wonder if she got him hooked on the 'ludes, just so she could get some time away and do this album. In the end it didn't matter-- Moss, Alpert and Richard did not like it, and she wasn't going to cause a row and force it. She was pretty gracious about it.
she was too underweight and thus unhealthy at that time 1981 so it wasn,t practical for her to go solo unless she got well..but she never did get well.
Most of their "Now and Then" Album was played live in "73." They played all their previous recordings in melody format. I sat in the 9th row, By the end of their packed arena concert, I stood in front of the stage. As a 15 year old, I was amazed by their grace and humbleness towards their audience. I will never forget this memorable concert. The Carpenters showed grace with dignity, and truly loved playing for their fans . They belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I would love Karen and Richard to be put in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, only they aren't rock and roll...soo that's probably why they're not there right now.
Well, I COULD have had the tape of the show to share with everybody, but my brother accidentally dropped the recorder on the way inside....preventing me from recording it! That was before there were any rules about recording at concerts....lol!! I'm still sick that I came that close to having a tape of the whole thing. But I do realize how lucky I was to get there!! Especially as an 11 year old kid.
Wow, how many other "unreleased" songs have I not heard yet? I'm a big Carpenters fan, and I was not aware of these hidden "gems". Thanks LoveHowardBanister for making my day.
You're welcome. There are 11 unreleased tracks total, two of which have not been released on the internet or to my knowledge anywhere yet, hopefully Richard will consider releasing them.
Yeah, it was amazing. Plus my first-ever concert ever, so it was quite a mind-blower. We had 6th row seats, as well, so I was quite a lucky kid. Still have the program, a few pics I took and the boat poster (from the same shoot as the pic shown here). I wish all of Karen's fans could have seen her 'live'. Had things turned out differently for Karen, we ALL would have had the opportunity. But we're all lucky to have the concert videos and recordings.
Hi. I'm the guy who saw Karen and Richard in Kansas City, Mo. on 4/21/73. I was a very lucky 11 year old, and already by that time a HUGE fan who had all the records and singles. Karen played drums for about half the show and played the hell out of them! She looked great, and was very healthy in those days. I still remember how her voice filled up the auditorium. First tune was "Help!", followed by "Love Is Surrender" and then "Top of the World" .
gosh must of been awsome woulld have loved Karen was great singing on the drums, her best prefomences are on the drums for me,never got to see them live ;-( as they never got to Ireland
I read in once of your posted videos that you asked to another person a picture of Karen Carpenter playing live in Kansas City back in 1973. Did you get those pictures? Is there any chance for me to take a look of them? I am from the Dominican Republic and I love Carpenters music and their story as a group and personal lives, specially Karen's.
That picture was on their "Ticket To Ride" album cover. According to the album notes, she was 19 yrs. old. Note: the 1st Carpenters album,"Offering", released in 1969, was later changed to "Ticket To Ride" in 1970 with a new album cover. What happened ? She doesn't sound anything like herself in none of her solos.
It's as though her brother knew the kind of music to play to harmonize with her voice.
So, it wasn't only her that made the Carpenters magical. I am really puzzled.
