Ohmigoshi, I know Dewey has died few years ago, but I read the book about him just recently. It is really a legendary cat! I lended the book to my friend and she lended it to her friend and I even don't know how many people have already read this book and where it is.
I feel so sad about not reading book or learning about Dewey 10 years later. I would be able to visit and see this adorable cat in person. And Mrs. Myron. She seems to be a really strong person. Hope you are happy in heaven, Dewey
I read the book last year and it's very sweet. In all honesty, not the best written book, but it's still cute. and Dewey is so cute and cuddly wuddly! lol.
I am 20 years old and have lived in Spencer my whole life, I have lots of memories of Dewey from when I was little, I used to love going to the library to see him :-)
im reading the book and i certanly have to go to see one day Dewey's town! what a beautifull story! im buying one book in spanish to my family in Mexico!!!!
@mewlittle My Mum sent me the book, and like yourself I read it but didn't finish it, so now I am going to finish it and like yourself I will have a good cry ~ like I did while watching the vid
just finish reading the book and had a great cry, and then I smiled as I knew he lead a good life in the library, with people that loved him and he loved them.
Just goes to show what a animal can do to a person and a town. Simply beautiful.
kind of weird my cat jorden looks and acts like dew, got him at the humane society back in 89, mpls, minnesota, remember hearing about dew back in the early 90s.
GLeesar- there will always be some bitter person mad at the world to complain about something. That is you.
The story of "Dewey" was an absolute wonderful story. The story is a PERFECT example how a cat's misfortune can turn out to be a blessing not only for the staff and himself but for the whole town of SPencer.
Cats all have their own personalities, but some people are unable to see that. You are just that person. Blinded by negativity.

I read this book and thought... perfect example of a public employee wasting tax dollars. This woman was paid to play with a cat for 19 years, no doubt writing a book on the side the entire time. The only thing she was good at was getting the cat's story out there, to her own benefit (though the town did benefit as well) this cat's no different than any other I've ever met... they're cute, that's their job.
arr dewey, the historian , philosopher , politician feline. Passing his knowledge of mankind to the feline, one day yes one day feline will rise and over throw primate!
I loved this book! I had no idea that this story would elicit such a strong emotional response in me, but I should have known. My strongest bonds are with animals, too, and Dewey was a great soul, as is Vicki. Thank you so much!
My mom and I found a little kitten at the library- and he was starving, flea bitten, and nothing more then a bag of bones- he was just meowing louder then I heard any other cat ever do before. Aww, and no one would stop to help him but us, and being a cat owner for all the years that i've lived, I couldnt help but pick the kitten up. We later decided to keep him along with my other two cats, Cookie and Fluffy. We did'nt know what to call the little library kitten. And then I thought. Dewy :)
I have just finished reading this book after borrowing it from the library. I couldnt put it down and at the end I couldnt stop crying. Thankyou Vikki and thankyou Dewey for sharing your life with these brilliant people who looked after you. I know they will always love you and remember you. Lisa xxxx
I saw Meryl on Regis and Kelly ( the tramp ) talking about her new Mrs.Fox movie.I was so hoping she would mention her next film Dewey but she didn't.She probably has one more movie to do then hopefully the Dewey movie will be filming but the projected date is Xmas of 2010.
You can see Dewey in action. Just type "Dewey Readmore Books" in the youtube search. then, click "Memories of Dewey" Video. There's the real Dewey And Vicki :)
I wonder how Vicki's new kids book on Dewey is selling? The other book sold over a million copies which is wonderful considering the economy.I am so glad Meryl Streep is playing Vicki.
Heh., I just noticed that as well. On his memorial stone..World famous library cat 11/18/1985 - 11/29/ 2006. Looks like the Warner Funeral Home made a mistake...
@siobhan104: Yeah, I noticed that too. Looks like they knew when he died and that he lived 19 years. They apparently subtracted 20 from 2006 to get 1986 and then subtracted another year instead of adding a year as they should have.
Here's a question. Where did Dewey come from? Does Spencer have cats that are feral and living wild and who was the "good samaritan" who put Dewey in the book drop knowing that when they open the book drop Dewey would have been found and maybe taken care off. Makes you wonder doesn't it? What if it had been just some other cat in the book drop would that cat have had the same impact? Somehow I don't think so.
It was said that after Dewey died, many cats were left at the library or put in the box drop but those we all taken to a animal shelter.I think 5 nuts claimed to have dumped Dewey in the box.Dewey was special alright.
I love this book and the fact that Vicki Myron weaves her life, and that of the little town's into it is wonderful. To me, it enhances the impact a kitty cat had on so many in Spencer, and the comfort he provided to her personally. to me, it is a microcosm of cruelty, hardship, insensitivity, personal tragedy, perseverance, courage, and love.
I also wish we could have learned more about his "middle age" years, but it is a wonderful book, nonetheless. I highly recommend it.
I noticed that as well. My one complaint about the book, though small, is that you read all about Deweys early life up to say 1994-96 and then you zoom forward to when he's an old cat. What about Deweys life in the rest of the nineties? I wouldn't have minded reading a bigger book with another say 50 or 60 pages. But thats just me. Maybe we could have done without the history of Spencer and concentrated more on Dewey's mid-life.
I noticed that too but I think Dewey's health wasn't so good those last 2 years.Vicki did say that the kids were asked not to pick him up coz of his arthritis. They may have had to cut out some pages in the book as not much happened those two years until Dewey died and afterwards.
Vicky Myron's book is one of the best books I've ever read. There are some copies on 2nd-hand bookstores (why anyone would want to trade in their copy is beyond me). Please read the book--you won't be disappointed!
I've read a few posts online and some didn't like the book coz it focused more on Vicki than Dewey. Some of the posts were even on the Spencer newpaper website online.I see Aceme1 removed her nasty post about Vicki.I told her to wash her mouth out with soap.
There is a page 292 in my book. I'm looking at it right now. In paperback my book goes up to page 307, the U.K version that is!! The last paragraph by Vicki is " and finally to Dewey, my magical little buddy for more than 19 years. I can still feel the the heartstring that connects us, and I will never let go". Beautiful.
" '...and finally to Dewey, my magical little buddy for more than 19 years. I can still feel the the heartstring that connects us, and I will never let go ' . Beautiful. ..."
I totally agree. Having lost my beautiful, loving Himalayan in 2007 to lung cancer, the connection that Vicki Myorn penned gave voice to what my heart was telling me about my kitty, and the loss of anyone dear to us.
I have just finished reading the book aswell. You know how its going to end but those last three words on page 292 really hit home. You know its coming but you're still not ready for it. I laughed and I cried. An amazing cat. Rest in peace Dewey.
@bubbly384 so did I, just finished it about 2 hours and 5 gallons of tears ago. No surprises that Dewey was known in Australia, just wish I could have travelled to Spencer Iowa to meet him while he was still with us.
Some people cannot write in english. This may be an american site but it is seen all around the world and people write in all languages. It is time to some americans start to realize that there is a whole world beyond the USA.
@vanessariva Too bad the old farts that founded this country didn't require English as the" offical language " in our consitution. The way our country is going,we'll be speaking Espanol years from now and the rest of the world changes to English.
@vanessariva God, thanks so much for posting this comment. Yeah, it frustrates me to see comments I can't read, but who made it a law for everyone to communicate in English? As long as Youtube doesn't make that a rule, any language should be respected.
Your book made me realize what our town is missing. I wish I could have been there during Dewey's reighn. I would have been your biggest supporter alongside my two daughters.
This book shows us that people still have hearts. I have never been to Spencer, Iowa but I can tell you that I would love to visit there. They call it the HeartLand for a reason, and now I know why. Congratulations to Vicky Myron, you won me over, but Dewey will never be forgotten from me.
My heart broke as I finished thihs book, reading it in a total of one day probably, I felt like I had truely known this wonderful feline, sitting there, reading, my eyes tearing up so much I could barely read, his story truely is amazing. It's sad, it's happy, touching. The good times and the bad, the funny and the serious. Dewey truely is one of a kind.
I am a foster carer and have see in many a stray kitten a Dewey. If Dewey was an abandoned kitty without the love given, he would have been seen as just another annoying, feral cat - nothing special.
I'm currently fostering an abandoned skinny Mum with 3 kitties. Mum adopted an extra kitten named Lucky after the 2 week old kitty was found in the bonnet of a car which had just done 25 kms. I have read the book and cried myself. What an amazing soul. Your love will live on Dewey.
i`m still reading the book and i have a cat of mine own, i heard about him in 2006 before he died and didn`t give it a second thought. then last year i bought the book at barnes and noble for christmas, started reading it im half way through, when i saw this i felt quilty for not thinking about him in 2006 :(
I had only heard of the story from Dewey's obit in the papers and online in 2006.I didn't know the book was out 'til my daughter got it as a birthday gift in Dec.Can't wail 'til filming starts on the movie this year or next year with Meryl Streep playing Vicki!!!
I just looked at the NY Times Best Seller list,Dewey as of this week isn't in the top 16,it was # 14 last week. The book had been on the list the last 30 weeks.
Aloha, I read the book and ended up crying like a baby. Dewey was such a sweet soul and a real gift from God to the people of Spencer Iowa, his Cat Mom, and the world.
i just bought the book and i laughed and cried so hard at the end..so sad that he had to be put down but there's nothing can be done since the kidney cancer cannot be operated..i know coz i lost two old cat of mine same age as dewey the same way..
He lived that long coz he lived in the library his entire life( except for the time before he was found in the drop box and the 3 days he got outside ) and Vicki took such good care of him.Pets that live inside and don't go out live a lot longer.
The grave marker is wrong too.He was born in Nov.1987 coz he was found in the book drop 8 weeks later in late Jan.of 1988.The vet estimated Dewey to be 8 weeks old when found.I guess they couldn't spot the errors by time it went to print. Can't wait 'til the movie is out with Meryl Streep playing Vicki!!!!!!
I saw this book in the shop today for the first time (I never heard of dewey before at all) and seriously considered getting it (but I was already looking for "A Lion Called Christian" and had picked up some Calvin and hobbes on the way :D). I will have to go back and get it now after watching this. =^.^=
It's basically a revised version of the 1970's book, but it's very interesting and insightful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves true stories about amazing animals (especially cats, as in this case, big or small :D). There's plenty of lovely photographs too.
You should get it. It's a great book, very lighthearted and easy to read - A good break from the norm. I really enjoyed it. Although, you may need to have some tissues handy at the end.
Great book! Looking forward to the movie. Too bad the entire library board of Spencer Iowa has banned any future cats. No person ever complained of allergies for 19 years. Dewey put Spencer on the map. Wake up, Spencer. Dewey raised your visitor count.
I can't wait 'til Meryl Streep starts filming the movie and playing Dewey's Mom Vickie.Meryl is such a wonderful actress and it would be nice if she got awards for playing Dewey's " Mom ".Filming will start in a year or two.Meryl loved the book and wanted to play Vicki regardless of what movie company filmed it.New LIne Cinema will be filming it.
i loved this book it has a very sad ending but most of all told a wonderful story about the life a great cat. wow. that was very feminine. anyway, great book!

Would you be kind enough to post this in English as this is an American web site.

Some people cannot write in english. This may be an american site but it is seen all around the world and people write in all languages. It is time to some americans start to realize that there is a whole world beyond the USA.

I know but I am sure there are enough Americans that know Spanish and can translate it for us.
HattieLovesCattie 2 years ago
@vanessariva Too bad the old farts that founded this country didn't require English as the" offical language " in our consitution. The way our country is going,we'll be speaking Espanol years from now and the rest of the world changes to English.

@vanessariva true ^^

@vanessariva That also includes a lot of Hispanics in this country who refuse to learn English.

@vanessariva God, thanks so much for posting this comment. Yeah, it frustrates me to see comments I can't read, but who made it a law for everyone to communicate in English? As long as Youtube doesn't make that a rule, any language should be respected.

I pray Meryl Streep does a great job of playing Dewey's Mama and that the movie does well at the box office. Its time for a cat movie.

Your book made me realize what our town is missing. I wish I could have been there during Dewey's reighn. I would have been your biggest supporter alongside my two daughters.
Sincerely,

I am a cat lover and I hope some people who think that cats are so dirty and wild, may realize that the cats are just there to be your best friend!!!
Cats are affectionate and adorable.
They are like baby. (so cuddly)
They are like human to me.;)

I am a foster carer and have see in many a stray kitten a Dewey. If Dewey was an abandoned kitty without the love given, he would have been seen as just another annoying, feral cat - nothing special.
I'm currently fostering an abandoned skinny Mum with 3 kitties. Mum adopted an extra kitten named Lucky after the 2 week old kitty was found in the bonnet of a car which had just done 25 kms. I have read the book and cried myself. What an amazing soul. Your love will live on Dewey.

It looks like they declawed his back feet, too, and he STILL lived that long!
What a good-looking boy.
RIP, Dewster.
fatsunshine 2 years ago
He lived that long coz he lived in the library his entire life( except for the time before he was found in the drop box and the 3 days he got outside ) and Vicki took such good care of him.Pets that live inside and don't go out live a lot longer.

why was the book wrong on his year of birth? loved the book a lot; but seems odd
miceal27 2 years ago
The grave marker is wrong too.He was born in Nov.1987 coz he was found in the book drop 8 weeks later in late Jan.of 1988.The vet estimated Dewey to be 8 weeks old when found.I guess they couldn't spot the errors by time it went to print. Can't wait 'til the movie is out with Meryl Streep playing Vicki!!!!!!

I think they just missed it when someone proof read the book before it went to print.

I saw this book in the shop today for the first time (I never heard of dewey before at all) and seriously considered getting it (but I was already looking for "A Lion Called Christian" and had picked up some Calvin and hobbes on the way :D). I will have to go back and get it now after watching this. =^.^=

how was A Lion Called Christian, is it worth reading?
MOONman480 2 years ago
It's basically a revised version of the 1970's book, but it's very interesting and insightful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves true stories about amazing animals (especially cats, as in this case, big or small :D). There's plenty of lovely photographs too.

Thanks!
