Fair enough mistake about gender identification by Johnny. This is a male adder just out of hibernation, and probably needs to shed his skin so he will look a bit dull until he does so. The dark zig-zag against a paler grey background strongly suggests a male, the females tending to be light brown with dark brown zig-zag.

They will aggressively stand their ground, as though marking a favoured territory and his aim is to find mates and spread his genes. The dancing Johnny refers to, is two males wrestling and attempting to pin each other to the ground. The weaker one will be chased away, leaving the victor to have choice of finding any females who venture into his territory.

It'll only bite you if you're stupid enough to annoy it. Look where you're going, and if you have to move it, do so with a VERY LONG stick. People tend to go OTT with venomous snakes.

This will be the Common European Adder - the only venomous snake in Britain. It can kill a young child, give a very painful bite but low venom count comparative to Africa, Asia or Australia species. There are only 2 poisonous snakes in the world - both are snakes that eat poisonous frogs and secrete the poison from their eaten prey.

Poisons and venoms are both toxins. The only difference is poisons cause their effect by either ingestion or absorption. Venoms cause their effect by administering it via a specialised delivery system. You can eat any spider in the world, because they aren't poisonous, and only two known snakes are poisonous. You can drink rattlesnake venom, and you will live, but if the rattlesnake injects that venom, you will die. You can absorb poison from frogs, but they can't inject it. Glad that helps :)

Actually there have been 14 deaths from Adder bite in the UK since records began in 1875, ok not a lot, but obviously there is a remote chance when paired with the scarecity of a bite in the first place.

Yes of course you CAN die. You can also die from a single bee or wasp sting. And there has been A LOT more deaths from a bee sting than a bite from a V.berus in the UK. You can also die if you're allergic to peanuts .

What I'm trying to say is that you wont die from a V.berus unless you get an allergic reaction from the venom. So in that perspective this snake is NOT deadly.

The difference between anaphylaxis from eating nuts or bee stings and anaphylaxis from snake bite is that snake bite promotes anaphylaxis as a symptom rather than the person having an allergy prior to eating or being stung - you don't need to be allergic to snakes to die from a bite, just very small or frail and omit to seek medical attention. What you're saying is totally irresponsible, what is poisonous for one person may not be poisonous to another but care still needs to be taken.

AGAIN.. you "can" die, but not very likely. If you are sensitive to bee stings chances are you are also highly sensitive to snake bites, because they are both enzymes many times react similarly in comparison to each-other.. God, I just don't have the time for this..

Everybody that gets bitten by an adder needs to seek medical attention, and yes, here in England they would be monitored for 24 hours, so yes everone who gets bitten by an adder would be hospitalized.
