@bestamerica - he said its 5 pounds, has an operational altitude of 10000 feet and a range of approx. 10kms he said they use it to check perimeter of an area or area of interest with risking lives.
If you've never flown a Raven or been trained on it you have no idea what it can do or what its strengths and weaknesses are, and im not about to just start listening them to prove you all wrong. im just going to say that almost all of you are wrong.
I read online that a Raven system cost 250k. I feel like anyone could buy a glider, put a wireless security camera on it, and get better range AND better quality picture with HD cameras attached. In fact there are videos here on google of people doing just that... for farrr less than 250k
@cosminx2003, AeroVironment's website reports that it can be launched from 14,000 ft MSL, which means that it can fly even higher than that. @krbosak, your impression is interesting but quite inaccurate -- this video shows almost none of what the system can do.
this thing makes be laugh it looks just like sounds like and flys like my wing dragon except for the range its just a basic rc plane with GPS and a cam but with a few mods can do just what this thing does o and about 600 quid and i would get to see what it see's thru my goggles this thing just gets programmed and chucked no input from user boring
"this is stupid, the cost is huge and its nothing special"
You cannot really fly to desired position using any RC model. The practical visual control range is 300m but the precision deteriorates quick with distance and is around 50m at best when you fly manually at distance of 300-400m.
Looks like you don't know what a Raven is or how it works. It is not an R/C toy, though it certainly looks like one from a distance. Google "RQ-11B Raven B" to learn more. Sister products include "Wasp" and "Puma AE".
krbosak, oh, ok, sorry. So, are your comments the ones not in quotes? Those comments are what I was replying to. Raven flies to 10+km range via military-grade GPS nav, compass nav, or dead reconning. It has onboard day or IR nighr cameras that the operator (and others) can see with from either the control location or elsewhere. It can fly fully autonomously, or partially autonomously, or manually. More isn't publicly known, other than it also has an IR laser illuminator and over 10,000 a/c sold.
@krbosak then do it, make a video and ill believe you. also the airforce uses uavs like this one as we speak. also the cost is huge 4 u 2 make 1 but not for the miltary and u cant make a uav that that will go more than 5 miles even if u use 2.4 ghz and fpv(rc) the airforce uses stuff u cant get ur hands on.
no i watched ur video and it proves my point. when u fly it looks like crap. fpv is awsome but it does not compare to the military. they could fly for hours, carry bombs, and go reallyu far but urs is just an fpv so u wont be able 2 go far and cant fly for long
anywaise im only 15 but i know that the military uses stuff that no1 but them knows about..
@krbosak You are totally missing the purpose of the Raven. It is for surveillance. To locate and observe, at an altitude that, from the ground, makes it look nothing more than a large bird. The layups of the plane is not what makes the plane, maybe you can build a fuselage, tail boom, stabs, center wing and wing tips at a cheaper price, but can you beat the electronics (the GPS SAASM and multiple payloads), which by the way, are all being upgraded to DDL?
They didn't do too bad on OPSEC, the aerial footage shown is clearly from the older less-capable version of Raven (RQ-11A, not the "B" model), and I don't think the stated performance data is accurate either... a true PR video!
I have some good Raven footage I wasn't going to put on youtube...but since you just fucked opsec for the purposes of a commercial, I guess I'm good. Thanks, Chair Force!
Actually that would be a great advertisement for ford not to mention it would look cool as hell, put some armor on the body and some sonic thermodynamic glass shielding on the windows, ITS NOT JUST AN F-150 ITS AN F-150 WITH A PURPOSE, THE NEW F-150WTF BLOWING.....SHIT......UP!!!! see your local ford dealer today and get a free AK-47 with a 500 dollar down payment

@VBH8888 you can its called an eagle tree, so it dont give the gps spot the cam is pointed at but you get real time gps data
