I wonder why people get so close to these animals and are taken by surprise when something bad happens. Read their resume. First question.. Name: KILLER whale
@SWATutorials - They aren't called orca whales! It's either Orcas or Killer Whales or Orcinus Orca. Thats it. But they are a member of the dolphin family that you have right.
You must have been out with Eclipse Charters out of Orcas Landing.... I think I hear Captian Dan's voice in the video! I went out with them several times and always saw whales.
Fantastic! How lucky you are that the Orcas came so close. We went 9 years ago and did a whale watching tour out of Orcas iIsland as well. We were told we would be from a distance too and had to have the engine shut off to watch. We stood on deck and was saddened that we could not get closer. Then my 4 year old daughter started to sing " Mary had a little lamb" When she did, Ruffles left the pod and came to investigate. He rose up out of the water like a submarine parked him self right
next to the boat not more than 6 feet away horizontal to the boat. When she stopped singing, he went back underneath and proceeded to circle and then went under the boat and came out on the other side and jumped up and made a huge splash for us! He then swam back to his pod. We were told that usually doesn't happen.
We were in awe and it was the highlight of our trip. What a memorable experience isn't it? We hope to take our son one day.
I had this experience once with A pod of the northern residents we had underwater close ups, tailslaps, and breach's WOW you had an awsome expeience aswell with J pod of the southern residents.
wow, that is truly amazing! i am hoping to visit seattle next spring break and go whale watching! what time of year was this? do you know if the spring time is a good time to go? like in march?
That was in May, I believe ... a week or two before Memorial Day. I'm not sure what season is best for whale watching, but the weather was nice at that time. I'm pretty sure at least one pod hangs around all year there.
The best time to go is summer, like July or August. They usually don't come in until around May or June (and they don't stay in the inland waters very much in those months). However, if you're going to seattle then more towards late September or early October might be better, because that's when they generally spend more time around Puget Sound instead of around the Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands
aaaaaaah im so jealous! they came sooo close that is so cool! i live by puget sound and i have always always wanted to see the J-pod! I've been to orcas island but never saw them :(
I saw J1! Look out of a big bull with a wavy dorsal fin. He has been featured in most, if not all, of the Free Willy films. In the end credits of coarse.
I've seen J-pod before. They are sooo beautiful! I had a Grey Whale blow about 10 feet from the boat, I almost fell overboard. I was startled a bit. Truly an awsome expierience seeing these creatures! Makes me appreciate the Pacific Northwest that much more. Home sweet home!
wow great video ive always wanted to go whale watching like you guys did in this video i love orcas so much they are very beautiful and if thats near washintion then i can go there coz im close to WA im in NC lol and maybe when i get enough money i can go and do that i hope i hope you have more videos like this one i really liked it and enjoyed it alot :D

I think he said "six feet tall" We were told that the dorsal fin of Ruffles, the big male, is 6' high. He's the big guy with the wavy edge on his fin.
