well in the beginning its heavy palm muting, very common in metal music.

The guy has a metal background, I can only imagine it's a technique thing. For instance, as you pluck the string, you lift the fretting finger off the fretted string would be one, but there are probably as many different ways to do it as there are styles, let alone guitarists. Does that help?
