My only problem with solar is the cells do die eventually, and the polysilicon isn't very easily recycled. It causes a lot of environmental problems in itself. (releases hydrochloric acids and silicon dioxide). Solving one problem causes another.
The cars used here are not - they are more like golf carts. Some communities allow them, but not generally considered to be road worthy. However there are some designs out there that do meet the proper criteria.
