Too bad that Germans build huge warships. So much steel they waisted in them, especially in Tirpitz. They were too afraid to use it in a fight. They should've used all that steel in making U-boats. How much did Bismarck or Tirpitz weight? approximately 40.000 tonnes? how much does U-boat weight? well not much compared to warships with 300mm steelplating.
Sure, they did not in the end make a significant impact. But the two ships did make a difference. HMS Hood was lost to the Bismark, and the HMS POW should have gone down as well (if only Lutjens had the balls to make a command decision). Tirpitz was a constant threat to the Murmansk convoys forcing a small fleet to babysit her. Both ships could have done more - the potential was there, But Hitler did not have a sea mentality and Reader could not see fit to develop a clear strategy .
Yes but the most of the U-Boats were sunk because there was no technology for them after the Alberich stealth against ASDIC. Also U-Boats were a easy target for Airplanes. The Bismarck and Tirpitz would have been able to destroy the whole British Navy. Thats why they send every unit to destroy the Bismarck and even throwed the Swordfish planes at it. The Bismarcs systems were to modern to mess with those slow planes.
