It begs the question if they are dead and in heaven or hell, or if instead the thing they destroyed uneleashed an energy which altered reality to grant Tom & his family their heartmost wish. Of course in that reality, bugs creep in....but reveal themselves to be symbolic of the freak who became a savior.
I remember that makers of this had intended to shoot live action and composite the stop-motion in later but it was said to be too expensive so they used this Pixilation technique instead. Has something I think.
@SynerJetics actualy i don't thinks its an afterlife but reincarnation and when tom saw his dad with all the lightning bolts around him it was meant to represent universal contentiousness it was tom in his next life .

They all died and in "The Relm of the After Life,The flies made a halo around Tom's head, because Tom was kind to them and other outsiders.
