I would say he is amazing for his control and speed. Why would you say his tonguing is not amazing? His thirds? His longtones (Maybe not the high F)? Maybe he isn't being to musical, but he has a perfect tone. Martin Frost is my all-time favorite, and from what I've heard he is more musical, but honestly, how can you say this guy is not amazing? I am yet to hear a musical performance of his, as I post this comment, I will look one up now.
@bige66the After watching him a few times, I feel like he doesn't put as much emotion as other performers, although he definitely enjoys playing. I still believe he is amazing.
omg he is so good!! he is my girlfriends clarinet teacher!!!! she was the one who was so amazed by him and told me so many things about him but i didnt believe her until i saw this video!
Some of this is pretty impressive technically, but on the other hand... meh. For me there's nothing worse than a musician who thinks talent is who can play the fastest/loudest/lowest/highest, but disregards what music is about. This video just gives me the impression that you are one of these soulless show-offs. Some people may like it, but in the end, this is among the most boring musical abilities to have. Have fun!
@moncor3 I've seen him perform many times. He is as impressive artistically as he is technically. It's odd to me that some will criticize ones musicality based upon a warm-up routine.
I wonder how long this whole warm up takes! He must be exhausted before he gets to whatever else he's working on. Very impressive though, I've been meaning to get his CD.
I have never seen anyone who enjoyed showing off so much as you. Nonetheless, your skill is mostly apparent. It is clear to me that you can play the clarinet very well, just not in the manner you claim. I commend you for your circular breathing, which you also enjoyed showing off quite a bit. I myself may not be talented enough, nor have enough time to practice at this level, but I cannot stand such arrogance. A good overall warm up if taken at reasonable tempos.
I zoned out and read comments during part of this video. When I started paying attention, he was doing tonguing exercises. The words that changed my life: "At that point, I feel like my single tongue is pretty well warmed up..." WTF?! Is this standard issue for classical cats to be able to single tongue 16th's at friggin 240? Disheartening! Yet another thing I didn't even know I was bad at! LOL
@AZRobert1 AH, its ROBERT SPRING. WHAT A GUY. You may by rated high by these geeks here, but you really have demonstrated poor playing ability to a million students. LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYING. Do you have any clue as to how pinched/odd the shape of the sound is, ESPECIALLLY IN the HIGH REGISTER?? you lack so much depth and openness in the sound...AND do you have ANY clue to how poor your intonation is??, ESPECIALLY when YOU boldly show off your extreme HIGH REGISTER???
@AZRobert1 WE DON'T HAVE ANY REASON TO WORK ON THOSE CRAZY high NOTES ON A CLARINET!! my ears were bleeding from the awful tone/tuning...AND THE SUPER FAST ARPEGGIOS lack SOOOOO much color and depth in the tone, AND you have poor tuning, ESPECIALLY 5:25, when you got flat when you went high...
@AZRobert1 AND when you play the klose scales....THEY ARE OFF WITH THE METRONOME!!! YOU ARE LEAVING early when you're beginning the next scale, IT IS SO HARD TO TELL THEY ARE 8TH NOTE FOLLOWED BY 16THS!!! Can't you ever tell that? AND WHEN YOU DO YOUR STUNT SHOW with the single tonguing...the tone is AGAIN pinched when you go high, and DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MUDDY THE ARTICULATION IS WHEN YOU'RE PLAYING SOO FAST???? IT even drags....
@AZRobert1 ....and WHEN YOU DO DOUBLE/TRIPLE TONGUING ohhhhh THE TUNING IS FLAT, AND IT NEVER SOUNDS SMOOTH AT ALLLL!!! ITS SO JAGGED...AND AGAIN I CAN'T EVEN HEAR THE ARTICULATION BEING CLEAR WHEN YOU PLAY YOUR FASTEST.....AND WHEN YOU PLAY SLOW ITS ALMOST LIKE SLAP TONGUING!!!What a machine.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@AZRobert1 I MUST SAY you have god darn wasted THREE TO FOUR HOURS each day with that clarinet and the metronome and practice rooms. You may be praised for technical prowess and ability to imitate a machine..BUT you really have ignored everything else. Don't WORK on the technical chops and nothing but technical chops, THERE. YOU'RE KNOWN AS THE "TWINKIE CLARINETIST". Dedicated to cheapness and ego. DEAR GOD, SAVE US. THESE CLARINETISTS HAVE BEEN POISONED BY THIS MAN'S INSANITY IN THIS VIDEO.
I'm not happy. I bought the Baermann complete method op.63 Third Division Edited by Gustave Langenus published by Carl Fischer based on this video and I can't find anything of what Robert is referring to. For example there are no arpeggios on page 14 only interrupted scales :(
Please could someone tell me what book he is referring to. Thanks.

Yeah, this guy really knows what he's talking about. I like how he give credit to his fingers doing the work. It's because of the fingers that everything really fall into place.
Great tone, spectacular articulation, wonderful playing. I would like to know what he knows about clearer single-triple tonguing and flawless circular breathing...
Forget flight of the bumble bee, that piece is doable by many. If you want to hear incredibly intense clarinet technique, check out Bazzini: Le Ronde des Lutins, Op. 23 by Robert Spring
I had a half an hour lesson from him in Belgium , he's the best. It was 3 day's, with more than 100 Clarinets, and afterwards we all played a little concert :D
He was just in Boise Idaho and did a clarinet clinic that i was fortunate enough to attend. It was amazing. He preformed a version of black dog and it was crazy!!!!!!
wow that was so high.. highest i can go is altissimo A but that's disregarding intonation and everything.. i'm probably more comfortable going no more than 2-3 ledgers above the staff.
interesting warm-up. maybe i should adopt it.. i definitely want to improve and regulate my technique. check out my clarinet videos to see what i mean on what needs working...
How in the world does he single tongue at 240?!?!? It's hard enough around 120. And how does he get that double-tongue so clean?? It sounds just like single tonguing!!!
"Fetes" in the orchestral suite "Nocturnes" by Debussy and, of course, the infamous "Midsummer Night's Dream" of Mendelssohn call for speedy tonguing that may or may not be (depending on the conductor!) accomplished by single tonguing alone. Mr. Spring is nothing short of phenomenal.
I hope to god I never need to tongue that fast! I find some of those fast scales a little excessive and same with the tonguing... but hey if you can do it, why not.
God almighty.... I wonder if he finds anything technically challenging at this point.

The back of the tongue sounds too low and does not shape the sound properly or provide enough focus in the middle and upper register.
