I love the BBC's comment: "Close to being an act of worship". It was written and intended to be performed as an ACT of WORSHIP! That's why it's called a MASS!!!
'As you can see, it is not an ordinary occurrence and would not have happened had any ingredient been left out: exhaustion, bias in the belief complexes, attention from an Orion entity, and the metaphysical nature of that particular set of words.'
'This entity has an intense devotion to the teachings and example of the one it calls Jesus. This entity then vibrates in song a most demanding version, called The Mass in B Minor by Bach, of this exemplary votive complex of sound vibrations. The entity is consciously identifying with each part of this Mass. Only thusly was the chink made available. '
Bach is great! Very, very beautiful pieces of music! I also like very much this amazing Daniel Taylor's voice with his "ethereal" timbre! A rare opportunity to see him. Thanks for posting.
Not a woman's voice, he's using falsetto. Like the Beeges, or Justin Timberlake, only much much better. Type 'countertenor' into any search engine, you'll find thousands upon thousands.
Watch Dietrich Henschel in a complete performance of Haydn's Creation this weekend 12-15 June, free, online at the London Symphony Orchestra's website. Visit our channel for more information.
BBC says it is "almost like a worship service"???
Uh, yeah. That's what a mass is, dummies.
This piece was written in reverence and awe to celebrate God in His Almighty work through the Lord Jesus Christ. So, yes, it is "like a worship service".
I'm an aetheist and I absolutely agree that this is utterly stupid of the BBC, sadly typical however, and if you can't appreciate why it was written and what inspired it go listen to "Best of Pan Pipes volume 3" from the service station.
Not the BBC, but BBC music magazine, two entirely different organisations. It was a music review which was not talking about the Mass itself, but the nature of the performance. Not every live (or recorded) performance emphasises the religious nature of the work, most probably focus on the dramatic and expressive elements.
Well, why perform the mass at all? It's arguable that it wasn't intended for public performance by Bach anyway. And why not perform it in a German church? And where are the choir boys? Shouldn't the conductor be directing from the organ, or from a violin? Where are the priests? Why are women singing in church? Isn't it inauthentic to record the performance for DVD...?
No seriously, those are all valid points. But hey, if one extra person gets to see this because it was put on DVD, then I think it's worth the potential minutia that Bach would've had to put up with.
After all, Bach said, "The aim and final end of all music is the glory of the God and the refreshment of the soul."
yes, but did you know it was never performed while he was alive? and he wrote it as a protestant for the woman his prince was marrying and he wrote it to show the Catholics and Protestants were together
why perform it ? Well it's extremely simple : because it's gorgeous music !!! and for what is of the choir boys, should I remind you that we're in 2009, and that SATB choirs composed of both men and women are extremely current. I think we should just appreciate this for the musical masterwork it is, and it is not at all more inauthentic to record this than any other type of music.
This performance of these extracts is perhaps a bit too fast, perhaps they had to do it at a faster tempo in order to fit it onto a single DVD (?). B minor Mass is a fabulous piece, our own choir performed it only last Sunday, 5 october - to a packed house and a standing ovation, here in Dublin (Ireland). Enjoy!!
i had goosebumps all over while listening to this. great music!

Bach IS god. Before He was alive, when people died, they just went to a big waiting room in the sky to wait for Him to get back to heaven.
