I liked Angel best (the character) when they played up how old and out-of-touch he was. His love of Charlton Heston movies, for instance. Which is why I think Captain America will be fun in the Avengers, because nobody is more out of touch than Steve Rogers.

I think it was apparent and evident that Joss had a hard time with Angel. I think Angel's greatest downfall was the fact that they reinvented him everyyear instead of letting him have a balance. "What it was we were doing with it" isn't supposed to be a good thing.
I rate the episodes 1-5 1-5. The first season was it's greatest and the fifth season was it's weakest.
It's second downfall was David Greenwalt leaving. I just don't think Joss handled Angel well.

Season 1 was weak, it was just the show finding itself, and only the Faith episodes and the last couple of episodes are really excellent. Season 2 was a massive leap in quality compared to season 1.

It wa a shame to ruin Spikes sacrifice in Buffy but he made Angel so much better in it's last days. The interplay between the two vamps was very amusing and nteresting to watch, almost father and son, almost brothers. I liked it alot.
