  • STV will sell you this on DVD and charge you per episode. There were 7 one hour episodes made and they may offer you a discount if you purchase all seven. You need to contact the FOOTAGE SALES department at STV in Glasgow.

  • Geraldine McEwan's Miss Brodie seems to be more natural than Maggie Smith's Miss Brodie (in my opinion)...Smith was a great actress but I found her Jean Brodie a bit overacting quite a lot when she spoke her lines

  • I now realise how pretty Geraldine McEwan was when she was younger (she was in her late 40s when filming this TV series)...

  • Yes, I recall this series - surprising to realize that it was made only 9 years after the feature film. I was very good but - unless my memory is playing tricks with me - I seem to remember that the series ended without finishing the story - Miss Brodie's dismissal after the death of one of her students in the Spanish Civil war. Am I right about that? This certainly should be on DVD if the tapes still exist.

  • Anyone know where the music can be obtained? I don't know why it has taken me until now to look for it. (And I agree - GMcE _is_ JB for me. That look.)

  • The reason this has not been released on DVD I would think would be down to rights on others versions - the rights of the book are no doubt tied up with some movie studio somewhere that may preclude a release, and of course the Maggie Smith movie being available on DVD may get in the way too. Also, very importantly, STV made this in conjunction with the Robert Stigwood Organisation and split rights like that can be a pain to unravel 30-odd years later.

  • You can actually have copies of this series transferred on to a dvd, but it will cost a couple of hundred pounds to do so. I need to dig up thedetails I found a couple of years back.

  • Rumour has it that Scottish TV (like the BBC's acts of cultural vandalism in the 70s 80s) wiped the tapes... That's, allegedly, why they won't/can't release it..

  • thanks for this clip!!!!! I was 12 yrs old in 1984 living in Venezuela when I first saw this program and I never forgot about it,always wishing I could watch it again....please please more episodes!!!!....

  • Classic !

  • Would love a copy of those episodes too.

  • I've been calling and emailing STV for YEARS...they are not receptive, My friend did get them for a showing at a retrospective. So it seems they exist !

  • Thanks for sharing this long lost relic! McEwan was wonderful as was the production as a whole. When will it come to DVD? I cannot understand how something like this just "disappears."

  • It is available on Ebay at present

  • Glad to see that that there are other fans of this TV series. I remember watching it on PBS in the U.S. when I was in high school and being captivated by it. No disrespect to Maggie Smith but for me Geraldine McEwan is THE Miss Jean Brodie. Like annie6075, I loved Marvin Hamlish's hauntingly beautiful theme and have searched in vain for it on the Internet for years (in fact, I'm here as a result of a search for TPOMJB on YouTube on the off chance I might find it here :-( )

  • I'd really love to get a copy of this on video or whatever. It seems my wife was in it (one of the girls), and it would be fab to surprise her with it. I really hope it is released soon - I think I'll contact STV about it...

  • my friend Bruce got this at a discount from stv. will try to get details from him as ALAS neither of us can work out how to do it

  • Thanks for that. I actually got a reply from STV and they offered to make me a copy from their masters, which I accepted.

    Got them yesterday - brilliant!

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you could make a copy. i'd GLADLY PAY!!!!

  • @scanbran Please put it on youtube!

  • @scanbran Yes, I recall this series - surprising to realize that it was made only 9 years after the feature film. • I saw this series the first time around. Then it sunk without trace, like so much great tv drama. They must have spent a lot of money on this production, why not spend a bit more and put it on tape or disk. Disney makes a fortune on stuff he produced in the 1930s and 40s. This was made in the late 70s I think. The producers of this master work should take a leaf out of the master's book and get copies out there for sale

  • i too remember this series it was really great and does anyone remember the theme tune written by marvin hamlish it was beautifully haunting. of all the crap we get repeated on telly it has always amazed me why this has never been aired again

  • I love Miss Jean Brodie - and would kill to see all of this!

  • It is STV who will not release this on dvd. I cannot think why. It was certainly one of their most lavish and lovingly crafted productions, Muriel Spark said that Geraldine MacEwan was by far her favourite Brodie. she added that the Maggie Smith version was primarily a "showcase" for Smith's talents.

I have some pictures of the Geraldine version as part of a blog on myspace. /thatdonald

Maybe it is time to petition STV into AT LEAST putting some clips on youtube -

  • LOL...I've written them and actually called ITV's offices a few years back. Their ITV video store is now temporarily down, and the redirect doesnt have anything.

Let me know...I'll be glad to sign a petition. There's NO REASON why this series shouldn't be available.

  • Loved the Jean Brodie series when I was a kid. As good as Maggie Smith is, it'll always be Geraldine McEwan for me. Thanks for putting this up, let's hope for a dvd release soon.

  • I remember watching this and being really annoyed I couldn't see the Channel 4 repeats because I was at school. Now that Muriel Spark has died, maybe there'll be a chance it will be released.

  • I am lucky enough to have all but the first episode taped on VHS from the early 1980's. Well worth watching and certainly a fantastic performance by Geraldene McEwan.
