There is an even easier way to grow your own fresh veggies and herbs. Its called The Bucket Garden. I have one in my back yard and love it! Ted Hallett, The Garden Master is taking the best of hydroponics gardening, organic gardening and has wrapped it up in a high bred container garden.
...this doesn't look like a good idea, diapers i assume aren't exactly food safe, the white stuff just sounds dangerous, and the "soil" is basicly falling out of the basket...i mean this looks very nice, but it just seems like a diy superfund project
I love your channel. This is my first year container/raised bed gardening.I just dont have the time to weed a big garden anymore. So far,so good. One tomato plant with blossom rot because of lack of drainage.I drilled some more holes,so hope it'll clear up.
We've had so much rain here in Ohio but I still managed to get a lot of my herbs that wintered over in the garage into the ground. Mother's Day is the official day here.
It is almost getting warm enough here in Colorado to start gardening. We usually plant after Mother's Day to avoid a late frost. I like to use a raised garden as it is easier to get to and maintain.
You can plant herbs in containers closer than you would in the ground since you may be harvesting them sooner due to the fact that you control how much sun, etc. they get. You'll have to fertilize and water a bit more, though. The spacing is a personal thing - I use the French Intensive Method in my in-ground herb garden. Everything's close together so it chokes out weeds.
WIll do later today. Oh and for Beca, I would wait until they get a bit larger before thinning out. The ones you thin out are great in salads, stir friees, etc.
I have a question...I have a rabbit, and he eats herbs. They're super expensive where I live, so I decided to plant my own for him...I planted Basil, Cilantro and parsley in pots in my window seal in our sunroom. It's been about 4 weeks now and all are sprouting up everywhere, but I put down a thick layer of seeds all around the pot, so they're sprouting up SUPER thick. Do I HAVE to thin them out? If so, how do I do that? they're still small. I just don't want to kill them :/
Boy am I hungry now for some fresh locally grown produce! Thanks for the video and enjoyed it. Grew up and own a 300 acre farm that I rent out and am a "pretend" farmer on to not interfere with my real estate job. But kids exposed to the farming end of growing up and it will stay with them for life.
I enjoyed your video. I'm going to grow herbs in containers this spring, mainly to attract butterflies. I will probably plant borage, basil, fennel, milkweed, dill. I've heard that borage is one of the best for attracting bees.
@9aspengold5 Yes, they work well if they have a lot of light and air circulation. Once they get established, don't overwater as that's what usually kills indoor herbs. Basil can be started from seed; thyme & sage either from seed or small plants. Also try chives from seed. Rita from AboutEating. com
@RecipeCook thank you Rita. I grew Herbs for the first time this summer and they were absolutely so much better than store bought. I used your recipe for pesto and now have plenty of little containers in the freezer. The parsley mixed with Parmesan cheese freezes so well and tastes so fresh. So I will try to grow some this winter. Thank you again. marcia
Good video overall but I don't really like the idea of using neither Soil Moist nor baby diapers in my herb garden, plus I would have to buy a whole pack of diapers which costs money.
I would even break up my roots times than what you showed here though.
I transplanted my TickleMe Plant to a container garden. It is the only plant that MOVES when you Tickle It! The leaves suddenly fold and even the branches droop when Tickled. Just google TickleMe Plant to easily grow your own and to watch it moves..Its a wow!
I saved my plants from frying in the sun with some spotshading parasols I found on shadedot.com. You just stick them in the ground or in your potted plants and they filter the sun and shade the plants during the hottest time of the day. I love them. I have about eight of them sticking out of the plants on my deck. They're lovely.
Q. The weather is going to be humid in my area for the next week, I had just replanted my plants to give them more room so they were already in shock. My plants have started to look under the weather so I brought them in side thinking it was the 90* heat killing them. But since it was humid when I watered the they didn't dry out the next day so I stopped watering them. How do I take care of my herbs in humid weather? They are already dieing! Help!
@RiddleTales The weather where I live is REALLY humid so that doesn't bother them. When you transplant, don't do it in the beating sun, and keep them in the shade for a day or two to get their strength back. And when you transplant especially in the heat that you have, they will wilt a bit. As I mentioned, move them in a shady spot for a bit - don't over water - and see if that helps. Let me know! Rita from AboutEating
@RiddleTales HI me again. I did what you said, and that saved them-ish. They had already taken a lot of damage so they were very slowing going out the door. Then the squires came by and just dug them up. Guess I just need to start over now.
@NJGardengirl1961 Yeah if it something you are going to eat or suck on you should wash it up real good then slam it into that ass as hard as humanly possible
You don't need miracle grow to do container gardening. And using diapers on something that you eat is outrageous...they contain chlorine, let alone numberous other chemicals that will leach into your food. Using normal organic methods can produce a lot of things in containers without the use of all these detrimental chemicals.
Wow, you really trust the FDA! I'm guessing you're one of those believe-what-anyone-tells you nuts, aren't you or maybe a don't-look-into-anything-yourself nuts?? Not sure which... If you would use some common sense, you would realize that any paper that appears white has been bleached using chlorine, it's a fact. There are companies that sell chlorine free diapers for this very reason or there's cloth. Using chlorine gas to bleach also produces a toxin called dioxin, a known carcinogen.
I guess I'm the 31 year old never had a problem so far nutt. I used to drink out of a garden hose, used sacrin and ate bacon. My grandfather who immagrated from Italy was covered in DDT before he could enter the U.S. he smokes and is currently restoring an old studebaker at 87...We're all nutty out here. I would suggest enjoying life without all the worry because we all die sooner or latter.

Hey growing from seeds isn't hard start with the right soil. Use potting soil and mix in alot of extra peat moss and vermiculite or perlite so you have a very light, almost sterile medium with few lumps. Then follow the directions on the seed packet as far as planting depth and sunlight.

Not necessarily. Apparently the polymers DO break down into acrlyimide, which is a known carginogen and neurotoxin, especially in the presence of UV, but there's no evidence to show that acrylimide is taken up by the root system- to the contrary, in fact. I guess it's all about informed decision-making.
in my country, which is japan, nobody have own garden because not enough space. i envy american and europa people where everybody has their own garden, it must be nice surely, no?
Diapers in the soil? Does no one see the risk of those polymers and plastics within the diaper breaking down and leeching into the soil and then into the herbs. Diapers are made of horrible complex chemicals who whats to introduce them knowingly into their diet. Crazy.
Garden expert, Ron Wilson, from whom I first learned the now famous "diaper liner" method, said the polymers in the diapers are a different than what's in the commercial polymers like "Soil Moist". Diaper polymers don't last as long. Ron agrees that if the diapers are scented then don't use them. It might be cheaper to go the Soil Moist route. And hey, it's your choice: cloth rags as someone suggested, commercial polymers, etc. Or you can always do what our folks did: water regularly! ~Rita
Indiacalcutta, you can use plastic...I just bought some tomato and arugula plants at Home Depot today (they were buy one, get one free) and a bunch of experienced gardeners told me that the plastic ones are fine. I hope to see more gardening videos since so many folks are trying to grow their own foods.
Good vid, but good feedback, paz has good points about diapers and using baskets.
One thing different I would have done different would be:
Add some extra soil after all the plants are in place and tamp down just a little. You don't tamp too firmly or it will restrict root growth. This stabilises the plants, and provides additional plant food / growth medium.
fresh food means you get nutritious foods that you know is safe as you grow it yourself
gardening is also excercise that you needed anyway no more gym membership you get to workout and get RESULTS get it ! yes real results 2 birds in one stone !
True, lots of things can be a container, but baskets don't make good ones. They get moldy and can invite unwanted fungi to your plants. Also, NEVER put a diaper in a container of plants you'll eat--never use a diaper period! That thing will take eons to break down. There's all sorts of chemicals in them too and anything in your soil will be transferred to your plants (so avoiding unnatural polymers like soil moist is a good idea). You should also break up the roots a lot more than she suggested.
i use news papper as it holds the moisture in and also breaks down really fast normaly by the time im ready to harvest my bush tomates from the basket the news papper has broke down nicely and thr roots of the plant have spread enought to hold the soil in
This is a great teaching video. The sage has a potential to get quite large though. But then you can always transplant it into the yard when it gets too large.
I was wondering if they sort of co-mingle or grow mixed. Sort of like having two flavors from two different herbs in the same planting box. I dont remember what its called.
Make sure they're fresh seeds from this year. Cover with about 1/4" soil - pat it over the seeds, water gently and keep moist. Outside they should sprout in about a week. ~Rita
How can I tell if they're fresh? I got them from Home Depot, they come in the green pack that say organic and at the bottom it says "Guaranteed to grow". I live in a hot climate it gets about 90 degrees. Is it better to grow them inside under a florescent light?
Thanks for the post! I hate yardwork, but I love to work in my Garden. I just found out, that when my great, great grandfather came over from Germany, he did the same thing!
Isn't gardening a fantastic way of making a joyful life? Did you know that my Father in heaven created every herb and tree in the whole world. Jesus loves you. Oh, you forgot to fill the spaces between the plants in the basket with soil.
Hi Rita, this was a great video. I have just one question. Would I be able to plant those herbs in a mostly shadey spot, there is some afternoon and evening sun?
Thanks for the note. Most herbs like at least half a day of sun so you may be ok. The flavors may not be as intense as a full day in the sun, but it should work. ~Rita
Hi Rita,Very enjoyable video and inspiring presentation.I really like fresh herbs and veg juice.I study Metaphysics.,compose music, create art.I love the idea of growing healthy organic herbs.
great info! fresh herbs are so much better than the one's in the bottle in the grocery store! I bought a rosemary that came in a little 3" pot at the nursery and now it's about 5' wide and 3' tall....I have fresh rosemary whenever I need it now...just think...from a 3" pot at the nursery for about $2...try it!
why must so many of you mainstream gardeners insist upon using chemical fertilizers from evil corporations like monsanto? Not to mention things like baby diapers? My container garden is 100% organic featuring silver stripe tomatos, kale, garlic, chives, thyme, and a number of my favourite native plants. boycot monsanto. ban terminator seeds. demand GMO labelling.
Yes. You can either freeze it in containers or in a freezer proof baggie - put it in the baggie, get all the air out, lay it flat in the freezer. To use, open and just slice off what you need.
Thanks for having this video posted. So informative and comprehensive.

Diamondsofthe4th 2 years ago 9
Garden expert, Ron Wilson, from whom I first learned the now famous "diaper liner" method, said the polymers in the diapers are a different than what's in the commercial polymers like "Soil Moist". Diaper polymers don't last as long. Ron agrees that if the diapers are scented then don't use them. It might be cheaper to go the Soil Moist route. And hey, it's your choice: cloth rags as someone suggested, commercial polymers, etc. Or you can always do what our folks did: water regularly! ~Rita

I need to get me some Soil Moist. I would always have a tough time with basil in a pot because it would need more water than other plants.

Does the containers have to be terra cotta or can one use the plastic containers? thanks
Indiacalcutta 2 years ago
Indiacalcutta, you can use plastic...I just bought some tomato and arugula plants at Home Depot today (they were buy one, get one free) and a bunch of experienced gardeners told me that the plastic ones are fine. I hope to see more gardening videos since so many folks are trying to grow their own foods.
valnaples 2 years ago
Not if your a greenie.
There all kinds of problems linked with our societies over use of plastic. Yeah, it's convenient, but not so good for us long term.

Baby diapers contain a lot of perfumes that might cause problems. I am not sure if this would hurt anything or not.

That basil she put in there was in need of some serious watering.
DetBrian505 2 years ago
This approach will work, but seeds are much more economical than starting with basically full grown plants.

You should also break up the roots a lot more than she suggested.
paz4you 3 years ago 9
i use news papper as it holds the moisture in and also breaks down really fast normaly by the time im ready to harvest my bush tomates from the basket the news papper has broke down nicely and thr roots of the plant have spread enought to hold the soil in

This is a great teaching video. The sage has a potential to get quite large though. But then you can always transplant it into the yard when it gets too large.

I was wondering if they sort of co-mingle or grow mixed. Sort of like having two flavors from two different herbs in the same planting box. I dont remember what its called.
llongoria0 3 years ago
No, the flavors don't "cross over" or co-mingle. You can mix & match but be mindful of annuals which may need more watering than some perennials. ~R

i have trouble making cilantro seeds sprout. Can you give a tip?
greens2Bexact 3 years ago
Make sure they're fresh seeds from this year. Cover with about 1/4" soil - pat it over the seeds, water gently and keep moist. Outside they should sprout in about a week. ~Rita
RecipeCook 3 years ago

Would I be able to plant those herbs in a mostly shadey spot, there is some afternoon and evening sun?
kcrjmad 3 years ago
Thanks for the note. Most herbs like at least half a day of sun so you may be ok. The flavors may not be as intense as a full day in the sun, but it should work. ~Rita

great info! fresh herbs are so much better than the one's in the bottle in the grocery store!

My container garden is 100% organic featuring silver stripe tomatos, kale, garlic, chives, thyme, and a number of my favourite native plants. boycot monsanto. ban terminator seeds. demand GMO labelling.

quick question, can you freeze pesto? if so, how?
juliejo39 4 years ago
Yes. You can either freeze it in containers or in a freezer proof baggie - put it in the baggie, get all the air out, lay it flat in the freezer. To use, open and just slice off what you need.
