  • Hey have U ever had a power tube problem on the champ amps? my silverface vibrochamp had all the original RCA tubes in it, & the 6v6 power tube blew, which cased a resister to burn out, costing £35 to fix, so I orded a pair of GT 6v6-c tubes made in china, well 3days in it blew aswell, so stuck the other 1 in, & on 4th day now & still ok, them chinese made GTs R meant to be faulty a lot ? so getting it replaced, & buying a JJ as well, when I get the amp biased, I will stick the JJ in to to that

  • @UKToneKing I haven't had any power tube issues with mine. In other amps though, I've tried the newe production 6V6's and didn't really care for them. I prefer to pay extra and get some good NOS tubes from the 50's/60's. The usually last longer and sound better. Best, T

  • The BF Champ is defiantly brighter, which some will like & some will not, I like the BF better, mainly cause I like all that bright fender cluck, I have a silverface Vibrochamp, which is my go to amp at the moment, it is even brighter than your BF, I will do a vid response after XMAS and newyear, 2 show U how bright it sounds, Im getting a BFVvibrochamp next, I like the vibrochamps, as the trem on them is perfect, not as good as a princeton, but PR amps have the best trem ever, that I have heard

  • @UKToneKing I'll agree that the BF Champ is brighter. I think it sound best with my darker sounding guitars and my Tweed Champ works better with my Tele. They balance each other out. Looking forward to your Vibro Champ video. I hope to get one for myself one day. Cheers! T

  • it's sooo true, a person does assymilate their skills to particular instruments. it's a totally diffrnt take from your other stuff. sounds great

  • It's two flavors -neither can create the sound of the other..

The fifties Tweed has some thickness and a chunky lower midrange while the sixties Blackface has more clean shimmery highs and tighter lows (she never really opens it up but so much I can tell.)

The Blackface sound is probably easier to replicate, but you can buy a tweed repro or kit build a clone.

  • @TubeFreakJonas Yeah, different flavors of different amps. Both have their place. I lean toward tweed but that's just me. : ) Happy Holidays! T

  • btw experiment more with amps with more headroom. sometimes you'll like having that extra lowend or that super clean tone with no break up for certain sounds. all part of those subtle decisions that really sweeten a recording.

  • can we hear both at the same time?

  • @00Jackacid I'll do a video once I get the BF Champ's tubes changed. I've pretty much worn the old ones out... LOL

  • @Noitpure very cool. thats about the cheapst most versatile setup you can get there. myself i like to use my bf deluxe and bf super in stereo. im saving up for a tweed bassman and deluxe lol

  • what volume were you playing at? What's your opinion on a Fender Super Champ versus a Fender Tweed reissue amp? Which one is louder? Are the Tweeds really worth the cash that they sell for?

  • Wow the blackface sounds better.

  • @Rogerrumjet Both of my Champ's have had the original prong cords changed out for 3 prongs. I haven't had any issues with hum when using my Whirlwind A/B Box. Hopefully, that will be your experience as well. Best of luck, T

  • Tweed gets my vote. I like robust mids. Thanks for not sticking some distortion pedal in front turned up on 11.

  • hard to tell from your recording. Which one, in your opinion has a more beautiful tone? I can only get one. strictly, for recording so volume is not an issue since I will be putting a great some awesome mics in front of it. The tone that sticks onto tape is my main conideration. I play a lot of arpeggio sixties stuff

  • @novanine9 I like them both very much. The Blackface Champ has less mids and is more 'chimey.' The Tweed Champ is full of mids. Thick. If you lean towards a more 60's style, the BF Champ would be the way to go. Plus, they're cheaper! : ) Best wishes, Trina

  • @Noitpure - Trina, thanks so much for taking the time to give me your opinion. Are they both pure tube circuitry? I am thinking that the BF champ is a hybrid modeling with tube preamp? Also, I thought that the tweed is cheaper. Am I wrong on this? What is the unit that you are using to switch between amps? You sound great, love your chords & voicing

  • @novanine9 Both amps are all tube PTP circuitry. No hybrid modeling here. The '59 Tweed Champ is quiet a bit more than the BF 60's Champ's. Generally about $500-700 more depending on condition. I'm using a Whirlwind A/B Selector Box to go between the two amps. Hope that helps. Take care, Trina

  • @Noitpure - ohhh, I thought the tweed was that Champ 600, selling for around 100.

no wonder it sounded so special and sparkly!

Damn...how much is the tweed going for these days?

Thanks so much for the whirlwind info...can you run them both at the same time...of course...refer to the video, right?

    lol...thanks again

  • black face ftw.. thanks dude

  • sounds great! is the speaker is your blackface champ original? I have a blackface vibro champ :)

  • @opivy87 The speaker in the BF isn't original. It's a Weber Alnico speaker of some sort. Can't remember. Thank you! Best, T

  • Best demonstration of the tonal differences between 2 small fender amps on YouTube. This is the way to do it: no excessive 'soloing' but playing a repeated phrase with a perfectly tuned guitar. A lovely Danocaster too!

Some great playing BTW - very impressive stuff.

Where did you get the Whirlwind ABY box? I would love to do this with my silverface champ and Twin Reverb but have read some poor reviews of some other brands. Whirlwind seems to lack distribution in the UK unfortunately...

  • @sleakitweasel Thank you very much for your thoughtful and kind comment. I bought the Whirlwind A/B box on eBay a few years ago. I hope you can find one. Twin Reverb....NICE amp! I wish I had one. Best wishes, Trina

  • Real nice demo, rock out..

  • @delb9 Thank you! : )

  • Excellent demo! I see a Blackface in my future. Thanks for posting this - they both sound fantastic. A Dano is on my list of things to get as well...

  • @dicemansr77 Thanks! I think everyone should have BF Champ! Perfect all around amp. The Danocaster is probably the last guitar I'll ever part with. LOVE IT!

    Best, T

  • @Noitpure I just wanted to give you another "thanks" - I snagged a super clean '66 VibroChamp (Blackface) on eBay - it should be here soon! Your clips of your BF Champ really helped w/ my decision, as I hadn't been able to find one local to check out.

I'll see you over at MLP -Dice

  • @dicemansr77 AWESOME! I think you'll love the '66 VibroChamp! I wish I had one... Would love to hear your thoughts on it when you get it! Best, T

  • Cool!

  • great demo

  • @purenectar Thank you! : )

  • I guess the two main differences are the cab sizes and the tone dial on the Blackface Champ which makes it more like a tweed 5F2 Princeton really

  • You're a girl :o

  • Thank you! : )

  • Sooo sweet. That was nice, T!

  • Thanks for the kind words! Best, T

  • Thank you! Best, T : )

  • Great great little amps gotta love em!

  • Yeah, they are awesome amps. Perfect for around the house playing/jamming. Best, T

  • I know my gear folks. I've been playing for over 35 years and I've used and owned lots of gear in my days. My opinion... the 1980's Peavey Backstage Plus amps were the best little amps ever made for its size. Even better then the over rated 50's and 60's Fender Champ amps. And yes, I am saying in this case that a solid-state amp is better than a tube amp. Peavey got it right when they made this amp.

  • Nice demo, what were the settings on your amps.

  • The Black Faced Champ has a fixed baffle and is made from plywood, while the 59 is a floating front baffle and the cabinet is solid western pine. Those are the two main differences between these two amps.

  • Quick Question - does the tweed have an external speaker out?

  • Hello, no it doesn't. Take care

  • Thanks I'm still getting a 1955 champ a local music shop has for $100...yeah, it's pretty ridiculously cheap. I'll just get it modded for a cabinet output.

  • $100???? Awesome price!!! Good luck~!

  • Jolie télécaster

  • the 59 has a fuller richer sound, their both awesum. 59 champs best sounding bedroom amp ever, wish i had gear like that no$

  • sounds like rhcp- under the bridge

  • dang! Theres a great difference in sound eq!!! i personnaly like the sound of the blackface. How much is a good deal for these amps?

  • you are a true guitar gear connoisseur just like me..

  • It is an expensive habit, but it sure is fun!

    Cheers! T

  • I like them both hehe

    awesome demo! fav'd

  • I like 'em both too! ; ) Thanks!

  • You exhibited a lot of self-control there T..:) The BF sounded more..Crystaline (SP?). I haven't been able to figure out your tone preference yet..Fendery Clean or Mahogany Gritty (Reinhardty) or..both even. All I know is that Grit gets me goin when I put wood on knee and crank. Great vid & nice Dan style canvas. Now, if we can just get Phil to post a NEW VID...

  • Well, I'm a woman so I'm moody! LOL ; ) I like both clean and gritty. I do intend on cranking these two up for a video soon! And yep, Phil needs to put something new up as well as Dan(Skydog46!) They keep me inspired. : ) Take care, T

  • Yeah I know, I aint been in the creative mood lately. I'm moody too!

  • Preachin' to the choir! LOL

  • LMAO!!

  • LMAO!!

  • I'd like to hear little grit on that Tweedy T. Overall, nice clean tone.

  • Oh, I'm gonna get some grit going on with the Tweed very soon! : ) Thanks Phil!

  • Sounds cool T, I am messing with my newly acquired Victoria 5E3 this morning and it's not that clean on "4" unless I back way down on my Strat's voulme.

    What's thevoume on the Danocaster?

  • Nice! I'd love to try a Vicky 5E3! Actually the volume knob was just a slight roll down from full on. I think it's my blessing/curse that most of what I play comes out clean sounding. Maybe I'm not hitting hard enough?!? ; ) LOL Take care, T
