  • They had dinner at my house when I was a little girl.A big thrill.

  • Not many things as wonderful as this!

  • "Little Pal" by the Rascals is one of my all-time favorites.

  • This is perfect for a movie soundtrack , for somthing realy opposite to the atmosphere of this song ......like a bank robbery scene , or gangster shoot out .

  • When I was a little girl the 4 Rascals had dinner at my house.Such a beautiful memory.

  • I've been around barbershop quartet singing for over 35 years (3rd generation barbershopper) and even though the modern day quartet's have better singing technique and ringing chords: The old time quartet's like Four Rascals put SO much musicality and heart into their singing. It wasn't all about technique and matching vowels and vertical singing, it was about the heart and story of the music and that's why THEY will live in infamy while other better singing quartets might not. Beautiful job.

  • This just made me so happy to hear. I may be a young guy in barbershop, but stuff like this is why I sing. Plus, you gotta love 60s tenors. My bass doesn't when I'm screaming in his ear, but you have to keep basses in check anyways.

  • MY GRANDFATHER!!!!

  • Thanks for your kind remarks. I did lots of woodshedding at the convention and

hopefully all of us in AHSOW and any others who visited our hospitality room left

with feelings of satisfaction from woodshedding. Ours is a truly unique fellowship

of barbershoppers. May the style of harmony we love so much endure for many generations. Let that be our legacy. Great convention in 2010 - Rascaldon

  • @Rascaldon This is Scott Vienneau, Richie V. son do you have any other music you could send to me, I'm sure you remember me and my brothers Tommy, David , Rick ( not with us any more) and Greg, Also my brother Jimmy. It would be great to hear from you . Please feel free to send me a message. Thank You Scott

  • I met Rascaldon at this year's Barbershop Harmony Convention in Philadelphia. I was learning how to wood shed from him and saw his silver medal and read his name tag that said tenor Four Rascals. I blurted out Four Rascals! Little Pal!! and hugged him. l'm sure he thought I was crazy as I told him that I sing that song with my son each week at our chapter meeting.. and cry every time. He took a moment to tell us the story of Little Pal and sang with us. A true gentleman! Thank you Don!

  • Check out a picture my Father has of the quartet from 1965 - search Flickr - type "Four Rascals"

  • @enufsnow ....Great picture...Please post more....Jim

  • This makes me cry everytime i hear it. This is a real American treasure. the best version ive ever heard of this. These guys are unbelievable. I love it....

  • I had the privilege to know these guys....they sang on my Sweet Adeline show and later at our chapter room afterglows......that bari always brought tears to my eyes with that little drop tag he had....he used to sing it to me because he love my automatic reaction....I couldn't help myself.....so sweet, yet tender. They were SPECIAL!

  • I love this song....I love this group...I first heard this several years ago on a cassette tape...there was another song on that tape I would love to hear again...I think it was Cabin on a Hill.....does anyone have this on video or something? Also, very nice to have an original member posting comments here....Thank you for sharing your talent with us!

  • It's great fun to sing this song.

A classic arrangement from a classic quartet!

  • This is excellent!!!

  • Thanks for the post. Our barbershop chorus just started this one for our 2010 annual show package. I love singing it. What a great quartet.

  • I'll have some more music and maybe some video i have to get from a friend of my dads.

  • It's hard to believe that 50 years after I sang with the 'rascals our music is still "alive" and being enjoyed. I'm so glad.

I still miss Richie but I often talk with Tommy and with your uncle Jimmy occasionally. Friendships and music are everlasting. God bless

  • Rascaldon,How do you know richie and jimmie ?

  • I just found this posting and it is great to see my dad and uncle sing ,it brings back memories my dad is the one on the right and my uncle is next to him Jimmy and Richie is my dad.

  • Thanks for posting this. My favorite barbershop song of all time. My dad taught our family to sing all the parts of this song. There's a video somewhere of our family singing this together, the last Christmas we were together before he passed away. I can't count the times I saw him weep over this song, nor can I say how much it will always mean to our family. So cool to see Rascaldon1929, one the actual Rascals posting here. Thanks for helping create a classic that will live forever.

  • love it!!!!!

  • Wonderful, sweet music!!! Thanks so much for posting this. I was a barbershopper for a decade or so and am still wondering why i gave it up.... but i can still enjoy it immensely!!

  • Wow! Out of the blue I looked for something for the Four Rascals and here they are. Thanks to whoever posted this. Ritchie and Jimmy are my great uncles and I have so many memories of them singing at family get togethers. I LOVED to hear them sing. I would sit next to my grandmother Lorraine and listen. I miss it now.

  • I've WEPT over this song the ten bazillion times I've heard it. I've turned every one I ever MET onto it. So tight, so smooth, so perfect. Not a trace of ego to be found. They found the SOUL of the music. This is singin', brother. Rascaldon1929: On behalf of a grateful nation, thank you, buddy. And thanks to recquilt for the great post!

  • If my dad could only see this, I am sure as we all right our comments he is laughing or making a crazy joke about youtube. If you new him you would understand. whoever posted this thanks it couldn't have been a better new years gift.

  • From the day in 1959 when I began singing tenor with the Four Rascals, to this very day,

I can't begin to describe the joy I have

experienced throughout the years, not only because of our fellowship together (as well as with Lou Perry). Every song we sang had a

story to tell and we were always conscious of the message. We were four baritones and we loved to woodshed. Most of our songs although arranged by Lou were inspired by our woodshedding ability. As a result our music was heartfelt.

  • This is wonderful! Is there a recording of "Am I Wasting My Time" somewhere too?

  • they're awesome!!! it might help that the last person in every pic is my grampy

  • Great Thanks to my Uncle Jimmy! And to my Dad should he ever read this...holy cow you guys were good!

  • really sad. makes me think of my grandma. god bless her soul.

  • This is Really Good. But to tell you the truth, it's a little boring.

  • In 1959, Lou Perry was approached by the Four Rascals to do an arrangement of Little Pal. He told them, This is garbage and Im not going to arrange anything like that. Soon thereafter, a huge New England snowstorm moved in, and out of boredom he picked up Little Pal and wrote the arrangement that has become the second national anthem for the barbershop world. Two other notable songs were arranged for the Rascals, Im Alone Because I Love You and You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby.

  • The Nighthawks produced a record in 1962 which this version of Lil Pal heard here is a clear copy of the Nighhawks arrangemnet.

Four Rascals are onsidered one of the more refine quartets ever assembled. (next to the Nighthawks :o))

  • The Nighthawks did "Little Pal" on the Chord record label was probably arranged by their tenor Greg Backwell who later sang baritone with The Gentelmens Agreement for awhile.

It's definitely a different arrangement. I think the Rascals was first but not positive

  • This is one of my favorites. Rural Route 4 recorded this arrangement too. I wonder if this is the original?

  • Little Pal was introduced by Al Jolson in 1929This is the first barbershop version that I know of...probably arranged by Lou Perry. A few years later it was recorded by The Nighthawks. One of my favorites too. Never heard the Roural Route 4 do it though

  • The tone of the voice has generally changed over the years - but wow - they are really good. Never out of tune. Amazing

  • It's hard to believe they never won!

  • Yes...They should have won along with The Nighthawks & Sundowners.

  • I agree whole-heartedly!

  • one of the best quartet ever!

  • this is the best ever! i have been wacthing this for years.

  • Beautiful. I've been looking for this song for many many years. Classic.

    Thank you.

  • Very, very VERY well done.
