Also, a nifty little bug: if you, upon entering a screen at top speed and at certain angles (heading slightly downward, for example), the chopper may get stuck in the building without exploding. At this point, immediately slow down to a halt - the chopper won't move, but the sounds will indicate that you are. Then go up as far as you like (again, the chopper won't move), and drop a bomb on the building you've crashed into. This makes for a huuuge explosion. Oh, that was fun, wasn't it? :)
@Gilmaris Damn, reminiscing about this game didn't do much for my grammar, apparently. What I meant to say was that if you, upon entering a screen etc., *smash into a building*, the chopper may get stuck without exploding. And although the choppen won't actually be moving, the sounds will indicate that you are *moving*. There, fixed.
Man (alternatively woman), this was one of my favourite games on my first computer. There are two secret areas: at the far left, blast through the mountain and then you can enter the Mark Currie zone. It fixes your chopper and gives you plenty of ammo. At the far right, fly as high as you can (and rather fast), and you'll come to two new areas: land the chopper in the first area, enter the cave to the right, go back and your chopper has lots of ammo, and it's explosive. Yay!
Looks like you needed to throttle down the CPU for this. It has no speed limiter, so depending on the speed DOSBox is set to, it'll run too fast to control.
I originally played this on a Commodore PC-10, where the CPU was only 8mhz or something along that line. Btw, the person who made this was 15 years old at the time.
Wow, I played this game before I could barely read. I didn't understand what I was really doing, and had to press random buttons to figure things out, but it was fun ejecting from the plane, and running around on the ground before getting picked up.
"Chopper Commando" was the first computer game I ever played. It was also the first computer game that ever made me want to boot the computer out a window...
Yeah, it does suck that most people pigeon-hole genders like that (even now, the announcer guy in DDR 'still' says "what a cool guy you are!" and "you're the king of dance!" etc.), but in this case, I think it's because this game was probably made back in the day when gamer girls were not that common yet.
My favorite part was when you tried tearing along at a hojillion miles an hour. The sound effects were great too. "Berrr, bombs!" And again, the battle cries are awesome. Keep it up you two!
Did you know that the creator Mark Currie, went on to create the RTS game 'Trash'? :)

Horrible grammar by the game author but the death messages are amusing.
Gotta love how many game designers used to assume only boys played most video games.

I use to play this game all the time.
If you go to the end flying right, missle the mountian and then fly through the whole. On the otherside you will find a superchopper.

both the typos and the flying got me almost in tears
just a thought, how do you think you would have fared without LateBlt there to help?

It really sucks that the game assumes you're a guy, like only guys can play video games and girls play with their dolls, not fair!
Btw, well played hehe, I would have done worse (since I don't play copter games at all), so cheers to you! Yay!

I only did as well as this because LateBlt kept giving pointers... otherwise I probably wouldn't have gotten past taking off. D:
