this would of been easier if you actually explained everything you were doing because its hard to read something and watch what you're doing at the same time.
i'm sure you've already figured iit out, but how about using the dodge tool you can lighten it then change the color than use burn to darkin it again if you want
Once you've created the selection using paths then on the toolbox of the paths-along with all the other tools-it says 'selection from path'. thats waht I did : )
get the new verison first of all, then make the eye circle with teh circle selcet tool, then make a new layer with it and then use hue/saturation for color. then whats left around it erase

oh yeah you could always grayscale the dark eye and brighten it.. then you can alter the color
