I just compered the 4Sight Music Festival this afternoon with JOHN OTWAY - he is the missing piece of the 60s/70's Jigsaw which Starred The WHO, The STONES, The BEATLES, KINKS, whoever you loved.... JOHN was the guy that we all ignored!!! He encapsulated the fact that hope lives eternally in the human breast!! JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRETT will be international superstars!
You know what, people have been taking the piss out of these guys ever since this unfortunate event. But you know what, it was an imaginative performence that was limited by the environment and that led to some things going wrong, yet Otway and Barrett still showed tenacity and artistic passion throughout, and that's what matters; fuck the haters; the pain I originally felt when I watched this is something I've grown out of, and they should too; the result I see now is sheer weird chaotic genius
that look at 03:26- where he stares right into the camera and you can see him thinking "Now I'm for it... I have F%$cked up Willies fuzz box" - is absolutely hilarious. Classic stuff.
saw john and willy many times in the 70s,never disappointed, great to get pissed to,my girlfriend always fancied shaging willy i always fancied shaging anything.im an old fucker now still go to gigs but prefer a good dinner to a shag nowerdays
Wondeful - he was just recalling this on Resonance FM this afternoon. There's a glorious Jagger parody in here too - this is what REAL frontmen do, Mick! The great thing about Otway & Barrett was that they were punk without trying to be punk, and punks loved them for it. Good to see him still going strong: one of the few legends worthy of that status.
He jumps off ladders! He headbutts microphones! He straps himself into a percussion body-suit! He doesn't give a fuck - except for his fans! The antithesis of a celebrity musician - fuck em all, Otway rocks.
I had the privilege of introducing The Sainted JOHN at Hobb's Farm 3-Day Music Festival yesterday (Sat 4th) - he is still as original, mad and funny - BUT!! I think this might be the best "lost love" song ever written!! Love to John and Wild Willy!
Saw him at the cricketers pub at vauxhall around 20 years ago... it was amazing, Otway is never embarrassed but he works he's act so that the audience is embarrassed to watch... if you ever get a chance and you're looking for something alternative ~ go and see him !!
No filter. saw them a few times and it was just like this. Like a Syd Barrett with a different syndrome. Used to make me happy and sad at the same time.
I spoke to John Otway recently and he assures me that BILLY CONNOLLY was in the studio that night!!! Legends are made later we never recognise them when they happen!!
I discovered otway a day ago and I'm pouring laughs ahahaha this guy is amazing. I already knew barret played like a mad man... but otway was this way? man epic... :D
This was a classic moment in televised live music history for me. Otway was(is) awesome and these two made punks look daft. Anarchaic, musical, maniacal, fun. Watched this happen live, loved it to pieces and still do.
@billyconnearly No; I prefer to listen to the people I've played and jammed with since the early sixties. Probably before your time and beyond your ken.
You got me completely wrong, mate. I grew up in the 60s and as I'm sure you know there was quite as much dross around then as there is now. Otway and Barrett were actually entertaining in a sea of Beatles/Stones clones. I not only played and jammed with people, I went on to make a very nice living with them touring the UK/Europe.
@StanPomeray ..... Then I must ba a lamp post because this is NOT a good version of this Bob Lind masterpiece. I'm not saying that these guys aren't good musicians because that's NOT the case it's just NOT a song that's a good fit for these guys- no wonder Cheryl left them and went home LOL
Remember this so well, 1977 Old Grey Whistle Test, late Monday nights and usually rock based groups but then these two came on. Couldn't believe my eyes or ears- just brilliant!
Oh my heavens. The program director probably cut it off for fear they were losing viewers. ....Hooo boy. At least they didn't steal other people's music and do dirty little rhymes on top of it, like they do in this new age of enlightened music nowadays.
One of the best performances ever by artistes, one of the best songs ever, one of the best songwriters and one of the best guitar players ever...if you disagree, you're not looking properly. Keep on doin' it Aylesbury's finest.
Saw Otway at the Monmouth festival in 2005 I think, and he was regularly throwing himself of the top of a stepladder during the show. Later he was climbing said ladder and nutting the lighting rig, then exhorting members of the roadcrew to come on stage and do the same.
Chuff chuff chuffin' brilliant!! I saw them first at Eric's in Lpool, must have been '78 I suppose. Cheers for the upload, has brought back some memories.
When I was young I had a low opinion of myself socially and in terms of cool... then along came Otway defending my right to be a weirdo. I can never thank the man enough for getting me through it all and making me realise it was ok to be myself. Here's a belated thanks, John.
I disagree he CAN play, and he at least sings in tune, unlike some more famous acts today. It's just he will embarrass himself and poor willy terribly.
God I remember seeing this on the re-runs of the Old Grey Whistle Test, and he was STILL doing mad shit at the Tyneside Opera House in 2004, diving off ladders and stuff. Was a really nice bloke, he signed my girlfriend's albums and everything.
I used to be manager at a drop-in centre in Aylesbury, back in the eighties. One day, Otway walked in, and offered to do two free gigs. He said, no need to advertise, people will come! So, for the first one we never put up any posters. Result; a poor turnout! The next time, we advertised and the place was packed. He peformed Cheryl, running up and down, choof, choof, choofing, with the mic in his mouth. Brilliant!
brilliant

Without doubt, Aylesbury's finest! Otway regularly turned up and performed 'guest' slots at Friar's - I wonder whether they ever paid him?
But it was this performance on the OGWT that really did it - legendary!

I saw this when it was first broadcast, I was 15. I rushed out bought the single and album, have been a fan ever since!
We invited John to my 40th birthday party, he couldn't come (had a gig) but sent me a signed cd of him and Willy at the Roundhouse in 1977!
I am also one one of the "Otway 900" who heckled on HOTRS at Abbey Road.
Absolutely brilliant!
