at least theyare not in china or korea where people eat them or africa where people kill animals all the time, my mum was born in africa and she knows about it and i have a korean aunt and K-cousin and they tell me about the animals that get eaten there but every country has animal abuse so don't think its just japan because of the pet stores , in japan people love animals and they treat then like humans so yeah. OH WAIT i have seen american petcos and petsmart. this is fine compared to that.

In my country, Sweden, you are not allowed to sell puppies or kittens in pet shops. But I've lived in Japan and I've seen some pet shops... I would never keep puppies and kittens like that (in most cases). Other animals are treated differently from shop to shop, it variates. Of course.

I also think it's bad to sell monkeys, foxes, owls etc. NOT good pets for the average person.

@tinybenni One of the differences is though here say canada a pet shop tries to get away from doing something like this, they will get so many complaints, sued brought to court and charged with animal cruelty. I've already known about one pet shop near where I live where this happened because of all the complaints form the customers. Therefore pet shop around here at least, are not like this.

@mrcheekycheeks nor here in england but canada and england are very alike but basicly everywhere else is bad but its not just cats and dogs here at my pet store the hamsters and guinea pigs and rabbits are kept in tiny living spaces and syrain hamsters are kept together and they fight to the death and should not be kept together but they still keep them together i saw one fight and kill another then the 2 others tried to eat it and the staff did nothing and their cages never get cleaned out.

Ive seen shops were hey keep the dogs in the cages during business hours but they let them out into bigger kennels at night when their closed,and they all look clean and well fed.

There are 4 million dogs and cats euthanized in US shelters each year because there aren't enough homes for the amount of animals bred. I don't think that number is as high in Japan but certainly breeding pets in stores contributes greatly to the number put down in shelters.

My husbands sister has a dog she bought from a similar pet shop that she keeps locked up in a small cage in her bedroom at her moms house all day while shes out working, shopping, hanging out, etc. When you go to his moms house and walk down the hall way it smells so bad of piss and shit. This is in Tokyo Japan, they are Japanese. She also dresses the dog up in the costumes when she does decide to bring it outside.

What is this? A five minute video in a pet shop and suddenly all the shops there are cruel to animals?  Honestly all those cages looked clean, save for one dog that looked thin, which may be attributed to the breed, they all looked healthy. Those cages are not a whole lot smaller than what you would find in most shops or vet offices. I'm not advocating animal cruelty, but I think this video is more than just a little off base.

I went to a lot of pet stores in Japan. They do let them out of those cages and play with them. The cages are about the same size as ones I see back home. I don't see what's so sad about well-fed animals with a roof over their head, this is just their temporary home until someone buys them. These animals just look bored, but it's better than being outside on the street with disease, predators, and dangerous cars and trucks. Japan actually treats its pets better than some people treat their kids.

In Australia theres a lot more room for animals in pet stores and I don't think i've ever seen them in those wire cages before either. I lived in a small country town in Japan and this was the only pet shop so that probably played a part in my emotional response too!
