Bach's employers scarcely paid him a fraction of what his heavenly music is worth. Today he might command enough to support his huge family for life from just one opus.
Perhaps we should rather admire his humility for not more frequently losing his rag with the unappreciative of his age.
Joanna MacGregor is performing with and directing Britten Sinfonia at Londons Roundhouse on 23th Jan. Including Bach's Keyboard Concerto No.5 in F Minor and No.1 in D Minor.
Dissonant intervals by themselves grate on the ears, but bach was able to use them so expressively to move between consonant intervals. Sometimes when I am learning a new bach piece, I am shocked by the intervals he actually uses, but when I play it all together, it sounds wonderful.
@mortson978 I agree! I've played many of his preludes (not THE preludes, the easier ones), and a few inventions, and in his 13th Invention, there's one part in the middle section where the left hand melody is doing something, and the right hand is doing something else, and they both clash on a minor second. Like you, when I first saw it, I thought I probably misread the score...but then I looked again and again to make sure, and it was correct..now, it sounds completely normal to me. :P
Glenn Gould. Glenn Gould's unique way to interpret Bach."
I agree in part since it is nearly impossible to think of Bach without also remembering Gould. But... I guess they needed a balanced decission to make it a "only Bach" doco. Therefore nothing else but Bach is mentioned. Wich is understandable.
Scientific progress alone is no progress at all. Here's our Brave New World:
All entertainment, all the time; all sex, all the time; sexualized children; plugged-in 24/7; silence almost intolerable; indifference to the highest things; mass shamelessness; modesty dismissed as prudery; humans as technological objects, described as 'wired' etc.; all drugged; a bovine self-branded populace (tattoos) of counterfeit individuals; sanitized thought & speech; roses with no scent;
I know I shouldn't be caught up in debate, however, I wanted to say that by your statement you imply failure of progress in any area denotes total failure of progress.
Not to invalidate your view - it is worth thinking on - but I fail to see how these observations differ in this century as opposed to any other (aside sheer numbers by population growth). Ultimately people have always desired, fancied, and placed themselves in the role of God; a behavior woefully static.
chronological snobbery at every turn; the myth of progress almost universally embraced; man as perfectible & sufficient unto himself; the ultimate in consumerism: human life itself consumerized at the sacrificial altar of 'choice' and convenience; Mustapha Mond elected President....This is progress? No.
Friends, the Brave New World is upon us. Are you conformed to it? Most likely. But you can reject it. Yes, it's going to take work, hard work. You'll have to remain constantly alert,
even regarding seemingly trivial things (e.g., that obnoxious use of the word 'so'; that 'ED' commercial; that lewd billboard on the side of the road; the removal of those kneelers;). And you must be willing to be seen as a crank when, for example, you refuse to watch - much less to laugh at - the commercials during the Superbowl. You'll have to make time to get yourself to see the breakdown & thus inoculate yourself against it. Sweep away all excuses. Watch tv, if at all, only with a
diagnostic eye. Skip that movie or game. Don't always be available. Do what must be done - or be another dead soul. The horizon of your vision will then be limited to lawn care & football, with at best a dull awareness that the BNW is upon us at all. In the end you'll be like the fish who can only say, 'Water? What water?!' Resist.
Why is piano-charles always comparing ? Bach=Bach, Handel=Handel.

Gute Nacht, ihr Sünden,

Kommt nicht mehr ans Licht!

so is the pianist at the end saying Bach was so influential to mozart and chopin because of the dissonances he used?

Perhaps in the arts and social community, but certainly not in the sciences and engineering disciplines.
Perhaps it is best to say: great progress in some areas, and retarding progress in others.
