Before modern sewer systems were built about 200 years ago it was common in every european city to throw all bodily waste right out into the street. The streets were full of rats, dogs, and even stray pigs shitting everywhere along with the horses pulling carts. It was much worse than india today, and probably worse than india at the same time period.
