I had the album this was on (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook) when I was a teenager. Nobody can sing this song like Ella Fitzgerald. What a great album it was. I can remember every note and inflection.
Sorry, gottasing4you, but Ella's is the definitive version of this, and many other, songs. Midler ain't even in her league. Hell, Midler would jazz up the National Anthem. If Midler's is the best you can choose, please change your name and "gottasing" for someone else.
sailor and nmbookie - back in the 1930s a ruined woman was shunned by society. Miss Otis may have been rich, but her lover betrayed her and ruined her. So, she shot him in revenge. She was lynched for shooting her lover and for having sex outside of marriage. We have come a long way.
Great song. and the pictures went great with it, I thought.
I'm in marching band, and we play Bette Midler's version in our halftime show. I like the band arrangement but not how Bette sings it. Ella has a much better voice I think. five stars.
there is a wonderful up beat version done by The Divine Miss M, Bette Midler!!! Its a jazzy tune, and it really puts this song into perspective and takes it to another level!!! Please find this version and listen to it. I dare you NOT to tap your toes, or snap your fingers!!!
@foozledad Probably nothing better, but if you like this, for a dreamy calm moment, please find Dinah Shore's version of "April in Paris" with Andre Previn.
What a beautiful song, but such a judicial travesty: any woman who says "Miss Otis Regrets she's unable to lunch today" just before being hanged has a great case for an insanity defense.
You are missing the humor, and this totally straight version is causing the problem. This song was Porter's joke on the mannered and class-ridden entertainment that Hollywood was producing in the 1930's. Check out Kirsten Macoll and Shane Macgowan's version for the Red Hot and Blue AIDS benefit in 1990 for a truer rendition.
Bryan Ferry could never reach what Ella has done here. There is such an ache in her subdued delivery; Such depth of regret in her utter restraint.
Bryan Ferry is a moody and interesting crooner.I met Mr. Ferry once, even kissed him. His masterpiece? The album "Avalon" and the song "More Than This," one of the most romantic pop songs I know.
But Ella Fitzgerald is unimitable; her songs, immortal. She set the bar for everybody else.
I would have given anything to have a drink with her!
@Abernis maybe, if by "belongs to" you mean Waters sang it earlier. If you mean Waters sang it better, don't make me laugh. Waters sounds like a school teacher reading a nursery rhyme; Ella makes music. One of these two ladies is considered among the greatest voices ever--and her name is not Ethel. Sorry, mate.
I think the choice of pictures is highly suitable. Some of them are subtle, but perfectly appropriate ........... I liked the sepia tones with red. A bit like that red coat in Schindler's List. I just loved the song, never listened to it properly before. Thank you.
Great slide show!, and great talent. However its a bit depressing.

Another dynamite version -- not found on YouTube -- is the one by Rosemary Clooney.

I do not belive todays pop stars could perform at that level if their lives depended on it. There is no auto tune...just pure talent.

For me,don't think Porter intended this to be anything but a farce. Many of your images don't do it for me.No criticism intended.

Ella was the greatest there ever was, and likely ever will be. Ella and Cole is a superb team!

When she changes keys in the last "unable to lunch" line, it is simply heartstopping.
When I see links on the right to Streisand or others singing these songs, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Some songs belong to one singer--this one is Ella's.
yahwhous 3 years ago 7
Heartstopping is the perfect adjective to use for this totally brilliant song. Ella is just the best.
What a song, and what a story. I wonder if it`s based on fact.......Wonderful.
lagerandwine 3 years ago
Midler, Streisland, etc. 5th rate warblers for the masses who thrive on mediocrity.
Ella was a different class, very few have ever come close to her beauty & brilliance.
Incidentally, I also like Jose Felicianos version of this track.

@yahwhous Ethel Waters sang this originally in the 1930s.
