There was a Big Lots where I live that recently closed down. I didn't buy a ton of stuff there but I loved browsing around, seeing if I could find a great deal since they always have something different. If you like something you have to get it while you can before it's gone for good. I really miss that store :(
And I loved this commercial for the screaming candy cane alone. It cracks me up everytime!
I worked at Big Lots for 2 years during high school. The commercials make the store seem like a nice sleek place but in reality its kind of ghetto. I'd say its like halfway between a struggling K-Mart and a Family Dollar store. The cleanest Big Lots in the area was the one I worked at though because the managers actually cared about the store. The rest reminded me of walking into a flea market. Nothing was in order.
However, the marketing campaign this past year was, in my opinion, one of the best series of commercials run. I was very impressed. Hopefully they will clean the stores up and run more creative ads like this and it will help them in the future.
