@thomastmwc I don't know, were this any other opera house at any other year I would say they may have a touch of the "american politeness", but this was Scalla in the early 80s, hard to find a harsher more judgmental audience. which makes me think either this was the end of a superb recital, or it was really amazing in the house (recordings can only get so much).
I would say it's a slight accent. What are you comparing it to? There are many performers with much more accent than her. What makes her accent big? I'm seriously curious.
@operalament I've always been amazed by her agility, too, especially, as you say, in a voice as heavy as hers. Also, The first time I heard Samuel Ramey sing Rossini, I about fainted. His agility is pretty amazing, too.
I don't know why, this song was NOT in vinyle live LPs of this 1981 concert, neither in FONIT CETRA, nor in CBS, and not in CD by WARNER MUSIC! It's only in the DVD of VAi; it's the first "encore" of that night of June 2, 1981 in Milan. Jackie (Mrs.Horne) loves this concert, most of all, because that was the last time she was so thin: she writes it in her biography.
@lojundolo Hey! I used to have this...this song WAS on the vinyl...at least the one I had many years ago. Could there have been other prints excluding the song? I know I've had this if my memory serves me...maybe on cassette? I no longer have it. In any event...never say never, you may can find it on Naxos.
Oh my gosh - I love her! She's simply amazing and I can't think of anyone who can even come close to her. I was fortunate to have seen her back in the 70s in recital. What an exquiaite voice!
her diction is to be admired, her prescence on stage is to be commended and her perfomance is to always be remembered...what a lovely piece done by a lovely and talented woman.
Do you know that there exist recording of I Pagliacci with Horn as Nedda, Bastianini as Tonio and MDM as Canio. It is from 1962 recorded in San Francisco (I think)
In the Summer of 1975, I was in a Theatre group that met Saturdays, on Lankersheim Bl., in Hollywood. During break, this wonderful legato filled the entire building...I walked around the offices, looking to see the origin of this beautiful sound. There, in the hallway, stood two women; a shorter stout gal and a tall red head. I looked toward the women and stated, that was beautiful! The red head pointed to her friend and stated, this is Marilyn Horne!!! Where else, but HOLLYWOOD?
1-16-2012. Isn't it great? Marilyn is 78. Happy Birthday, Marilyn.

this performance is good but doesn't deserve a fussy standing ovation (2:37 38)...I'm just saying...

she was trained on rossini s vocalices, it is pretty incredible that a voice as heavy as hers is so agile. Just a great singer
