What?This guy plays good but hes certainly not in the league of being the best. But i guess the "very best guitarist in the world" position is very subjective since every list ive seen is crappy according to many people.

In fact it reminded me of Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile' (slow version), and 'Catfish Blues', as it is a much used blues riff. It is a matter of individual taste .........When I was younger there was a period I could hear only Hendix. (from LP's) After Youtube (last 4 years maybe) were I could see both live, Im stuck with Rorry !!!!! Definitely Im not say who is best....but who I like to watch best. Also I used to hear SRV a lot. But in the youtube ....again I love to watch Rory. ! Also think that in one year Rory did 200 performances !!! So no comparison on that!!! Even Japan +all over Europe + US

rory could play all styles, and no less an authority than MUDDY WATERS said rory was the most amaziong guitarist ever. he handpicked rory for his london sessions lp. complicated doesn't equal great playing. rory's solos took you places, and his emotional level of playing is only closely approached by duane allman. rory played lead, slide, acoustic on a world class level

Agree Rory stands at the peak. With him, it was not about "shredding". Rory was pure passion and emotion. Never anyone else like him. Early peter green was close. SRV and Jimi, too.
best guitarist? hard to say isnt it...depends on the criteria you use to judge...i know rory thought a lot of ritchie blackmore and he also spoke about the skill of ed van halen...As for me, gallagher moves me the most by far. Genius!!!!!

Sorry to disagree, but Hendrix did things that great guitarists now simply dream of. No guitarist has ever been able to fully imitate or replicate the Hendrix style.
I base my opinion not just on my own listening, but on the many, many articles and books that have been written about Hendrix, written by folks who are not only expert listeners, but expert guitar players.
Well, Hendrix maybe was better than Rory on the electric guitar (not in my opinion), but Rory was also a great acoustic guitar player. He also played many different kinds of music; blues, rock, folk, jazz, traditional music..
Hendrix was a bit one-sided in my opinion. Well, of course he didn't have the time to expand his music to different styles due to his early death.
For me, Rory Gallagher is the greatest guitarist of all time because of his amazing talent, devotion and diversity.
I don't know if Rory was the best ever, but I know that he's my favourite guitarist and I think that he put as much passion into his playing as anybody. It doesn't really matter who is the best - we have been blessed to have Hendrix, Page, Buchanan, Gallagher, Slash, et al. Let's hope some more come along to replace these guys!

@sllusus Couldn't agree more! 'Purple and Zeppelin' obviously isn't at all musical, otherwise he would appreciate Hendrix's outstanding and unique musical ability. Gallagher is good at what he does, but he is just not in the same league in any sense. 'Purple' and I have been having words about this (pointless I know!) and it is apparent that he is just obsessed with Gallagher to the exclusion of anything else. Hendrix is great, and his music continues to influence anyone with any sensitivity.

P&Z - I said that it doesn't really matter who each of us thinks is best - we all have our biases and favourites - my point is that we've been fortunate to have had ALL of them and the music they've given us. I love Jimmy Page's playing, but I'd not want to only ever listen to him. I can listen/watch this clip of Rory a whole lot and I thank you for posting it :-)

Having seen him live many times in the 70's and 80's there is no better guitarist. Plenty of equals perhaps, but no-one better.

for a best guitarist its more your preference.
like the top 10 greatest guitarists are all on par with one another just excel in different areas of music.
in my opinion rory would be in the top 10 no doubts. i've yet to see somebody be so diverse yet deep (generally if you expand into other genres your communication can get lost through the transit) rory never lost his soul and talent.

The "best guitarist" argument is impossible to win. Everybody has a favorite.
For me, Hendrix was the supreme innovator, no one better on the electric guitar. However, Rory was easily his equal as a blues guitarist.
Both were prodigies, both were self-taught, neither of them read music --- Jimi died, tragically, at 27, Rory died, tragically, at 47.
They were contemporaries with completely different, but completely godlike, talent.

Sorry to disagree, but Hendrix did things that great guitarists now simply dream of. No guitarist has ever been able to fully imitate or replicate the Hendrix style.
I base my opinion not just on my own listening, but on the many, many articles and books that have been written about Hendrix, written by folks who are not only expert listeners, but expert guitar players.
Since I'm just a listener, I'll stand back.

Well, Hendrix maybe was better than Rory on the electric guitar (not in my opinion), but Rory was also a great acoustic guitar player. He also played many different kinds of music; blues, rock, folk, jazz, traditional music..
Hendrix was a bit one-sided in my opinion. Well, of course he didn't have the time to expand his music to different styles due to his early death.
For me, Rory Gallagher is the greatest guitarist of all time because of his amazing talent, devotion and diversity.

I don't know if Rory was the best ever, but I know that he's my favourite guitarist and I think that he put as much passion into his playing as anybody. It doesn't really matter who is the best - we have been blessed to have Hendrix, Page, Buchanan, Gallagher, Slash, et al. Let's hope some more come along to replace these guys!
