@Aviv52 ok sweet thnx man, now i kno haha and get this... I went to this bluegrass party last year with my dad, and there was this really old guy there, playin banjo in a little four piece jam session, and the people standin around turned to me and said, you know who that guy is, and i said no, and they said, thats the guy who taught Jerry how to play banjo, and was like damn
@ giantfriendlycat: This was originally recorded by old timey banjo player Obray Ramsey. Peter Rowan covered it when he was the lead singer for Bill Monroe (remember Garcia was also a Bluegrass banjo player).
@cudaj2 Garcias playing on Vintage Dead, Historic Dead and the first Dead album was markedly different than anything after. The Dead was still a rocknroll band on this album. Their second album Anthem of the Sun was in some respects the first album of Grateful Dead music.
saw these charcters at the boston Teaparty in 68 ..with That son of Ozzie Nelson with some tune called the Garden Party...died in a plane crash...Rikkie
One of my first Vinyls along with Steve Miller band (Brave New World),....Winter of 67....early indications of peculiar tastes in music.....that's ok.
my dog was born the same day as jerry. my mom is a huge deadhead and so's my brother, he usualy comes down to visit then they go celebrate however it is they do, and when they come back we all say happy birthday to our pug bumper. i also believe my cat, butterscotch, is jerry's reincarnation, they look, act, and think alie, so its perfect for us all to be in the same house together. i'm taking butterscotch with me when i move out.
Great song, we used to do this in Maiden Voyage and Butler's Orchard back in the late 60's, early 70's. I think their first LP was their best IMHO.

Awesome instrumental break at 1:13! Jerry, Pigpen, and Billy seem to be in perfect unison!

@cocaineexpress I agree, but my favorite part of this version is after the break. Bobby and Phil are just killing.

I love this tune. It's the 2003 reissue, I think. The original was only 5:"45 long.
Phil Lesh comments in his autobiography that "to my ear, the only track that sounds at all like we did at the time is Viola Lee Blues. ...
I will always love The Dead
