  • this looks so fun

  • are these cars RWD??

  • @remixx45 Yup, both cars are rear-wheel-drive, not the four-wheel-drive "X" models.

  • Just want to clear things up....I know that 335i has 2 stage DSC ? Was it 100% OFF or just a single press on DSC button to deactivate DTC (to allow wheel spin) ?

  • @Kolyan24k All the electric gizmos were off on both cars in all but the straight line acceleration at the start, where the 335i had DTC on. Pressing the button once turns DTC *on* and DSC off, which is great.... in theory. When one rear wheel starts to slip, DTC works by braking just that wheel, so it should do the same job as an LSD. However, above a certain speed, or when the car thinks the driver has completely lost control, DSC is automatically turned back on and all fun ends :(

  • Where is 335iA an where E46 328i ? :) i don't know BMW models :)

  • @AlexanderA80 The blue car is the 328i from the older E46 series, and the silver one is the 335i from the newer E90 series :)

  • Impressive. The 328i with the LSD looked way more controlled and smoother during the drifts. The 335iA looked more nervous and edgy while going sideways, whereas the other one just went sideways but stuck to the line and went around the corner easily and without any big problems. The Quaife LSD is definitely on my list for my 1 series coupe …

  • @dtwardy Cheers. I can definitely recomend Quaife diffs for more powerful Bimmers, especially if you drive a lot in slippery conditions. It's a shame BMW doesn't offer LSDs on the options list for non Motorsport cars, anymore. The price was a bit steep on the aftermarket, but fitting it was quite easy; on my car the opening of the diff housing had to be slightly bored out for the Quaife to fit past, but it didn't require any running in or setting up, etc.

  • @ManuelBochs Actually it's "just" a 120d with 177hp, though I'm gonna give it a little more juice next year so it will be at around 200-210hp and around 400Nm of torque. How much was the LSD? I had a look at birdsuto.com and they charge around 829 GBP excl. VAT and shipping for the parts and 1.206GBP installed again excl. VAT and shipping.

  • @dtwardy Yup, I ordered mine directly through Birds, and they sent it quite quickly (it was in stock). Fitting took about 4 hours at my local garage, if I remember correctly. My car only has 280Nm of torque, so the Quaife has pretty much eliminated wheelspin in the dry...

  • Cool video

I cant believe they are handling the snow so well!

  • @schova

    Cheers!

Both cars had proper winter tyres, as is legally required in Finland during the winter. The blue car had an older set of studded winter tyres (Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4), and the silver car a newish set of normal Scandinavian M+S winter tyres, I think.

  • looks like wkd fun!

  • i guess open diff is not that bad with electronics

  • We actually had all the electronics off on both cars in all but the straight line acceleration at the start.

DSC didn't allow any tomfoolery, but DTC did do a reasonable impression of a proper slippy diff. Ultimately though, the electronics did step in at quite an early stage and so the E90 was more fun with all the systems off.

The LSD in the older blue car did cause a bit of understeer when turning in but it was still a fair bit faster (and more sideways :) ) accelerating through corners.
