Why do people always compare artists as if they are sports figures. Artists do not compete, they create from inside. This is just silly, all four ladies are amazing.
@Versul1 Well, that's not completely true, while each singer is unique in its own way, they can be compared from a musical perspective, which in this case is the voice range. that is the ability to hit low notes as well as very high notes. In this case, the wider range undoubtedly belonged to Whitney Huston. Of course that doesn't mean that she was any better than the others, only that she had more option as to her style of singing, including opera since she was a mezzo soprano.

Yes I know what you are speaking of as I am a professional musician and I know how some try to look at music from a theoretical viewpoint as opposed to a visceral one. GIT is a school just for guitarists that equips them to make it as a studio musician, artist etc. He told me, I am very well trained but I'd give it all away to have what B.B. King has. I promise I won't write a Part 4 I will end with this. You need to remove the math while you enjoy art. Yes you will have favorites but don't judge art with a slide rule.

As an artist you may rebel to the known realms of technique and develop your own new one, but without a technique you are nothing. DaVinci and Michelangelo spent more years of their lives looking for new techniques than painting or sculpting.
@Versul1 Part2: Chopin rebelled against the techniques known at his time and he created new ones that today are subject to study, Beethoven, mastered his techniques to a point that he didn't need to hear he's own compositions to know exactly what they would sound like. Ignore the metrics of a poem and 1 of 2 things will happen, you will be immortalized as a poet who developed new techniques for poem composition to replace the old ones (a true artist), or you will be writing crap (a true fool).
@mcmlxvi Theory is simply the training wheels you put on while you are learning. I can guarantee that Beethoven wasn't thinking at all about theory when he began writing symphonies. You don't understand what happens when you develop your inner ear. You can hear the individual instruments in your head. Believe me I know what I am talking about I am a composer. Yes I know theory, but it doesn't enter into the creative process. If you use theory to create you will have uninspired music.

What you call "visceral" is a valid inspiration to compose and perform, but if at some point you are not ready to give it form and structure, then you will be stocked in square one, and will never move forward.
@mcmlxvi Technique is something altogether different than theory and has more to do with effective ways to execute. Technique is at the beginning as well. I am speaking of artistry and creativeness which is further down the line of being an artist. I never said you shouldn't have theory nor technique. As a creative musician/composer you need to develop your ear most of all otherwise all you are is a well trained monkey.

@Versul1 Well, that's not completely true, while each singer is unique in its own way, they can be compared from a musical perspective, which in this case is the voice range. that is the ability to hit low notes as well as very high notes. In this case, the wider range undoubtedly belonged to Whitney Huston. Of course that doesn't mean that she was any better than the others, only that she had more option as to her style of singing, including opera since she was a mezzo soprano.

Yes I know what you are speaking of as I am a professional musician and I know how some try to look at music from a theoretical viewpoint as opposed to a visceral one. This reminds me of the scene in The Dead Poets society where Robin Williams requests one of his students to read from their text books instructions on how to measure the greatness of a poem. Robin then makes all the students tear that page out of the book.

I have posted it on many composer forum websites and the comments I get a lot is my use of good voicing and my understanding of music theory. Well although I have had music theory I do not think of it when I create. I only play what's in my head. That is where music lives (inside). If you search in YouTube: DON BLACKBURN · Snow You will find it. Whether you like it or not is based on your feelings not analysis.

@mcmlxvi Part 3: Years ago I stood in line at a Guitar Center sale and befriended a fellow musician who was a GIT grad. GIT is a school just for guitarists that equips them to make it as a studio musician, artist etc. He told me, I am very well trained but I'd give it all away to have what B.B. King has. I promise I won't write a Part 4 I will end with this. You need to remove the math while you enjoy art. Yes you will have favorites but don't judge art with a slide rule.

@Versul1 Sorry my friend, but a talented artist without mastering the technique will fail as miserably as anyone mastering the technique without having any talent. As an artist you may rebel to the known realms of technique and develop your own new one, but without a technique you are nothing. DaVinci and Michelangelo spent more years of their lives looking for new techniques than painting or sculpting.

@Versul1 Part2: Chopin rebelled against the techniques known at his time and he created new ones that today are subject to study, Beethoven, mastered his techniques to a point that he didn't need to hear he's own compositions to know exactly what they would sound like. Ignore the metrics of a poem and 1 of 2 things will happen, you will be immortalized as a poet who developed new techniques for poem composition to replace the old ones (a true artist), or you will be writing crap (a true fool).

@mcmlxvi Theory is simply the training wheels you put on while you are learning. I can guarantee that Beethoven wasn't thinking at all about theory when he began writing symphonies. You don't understand what happens when you develop your inner ear. You can hear the individual instruments in your head. Believe me I know what I am talking about I am a composer. Yes I know theory, but it doesn't enter into the creative process. If you use theory to create you will have uninspired music.

@Versul1 As an artist, you may disregard the conventional techniques and develop your own. But to disregard the importance of technique as a whole is a one way ticket to failure. What you call "visceral" is a valid inspiration to compose and perform, but if at some point you are not ready to give it form and structure, then you will be stocked in square one, and will never move forward.

@mcmlxvi Technique is something altogether different than theory and has more to do with effective ways to execute. Technique is at the beginning as well. I am speaking of artistry and creativeness which is further down the line of being an artist. I never said you shouldn't have theory nor technique. As a creative musician/composer you need to develop your ear most of all otherwise all you are is a well trained monkey.

Actually, Christina Aguilera is my favorite singer because she's so versatile but Whitney Houston is the greatest singer of all-time and no one can compare to Mariah's voice, she's so unique. They're all perfect singers in their own way. And even though I'm not a big fan of Celine, damn! That woman has an amazing voice!

I hope this video is more aimed at people who think Christina is better than the other three ladies in the video and not aimed at Christina herself because I am a fan of hers and I have never heard her say that she herself was better than the others. In fact I've heard her mention that those ladies inspire her. I'm a huge fan of all four of these performers and I don't compare them too each because there is no comparison. They are all wonderful in their own rights.
