  • I heard someone saying that classical music should be listened rationally, in an aesthetic way, instead of romantically. Well, maybe he's right, but I can't help myself! Trying not to be emotionally involved when listening to Wagner is very hard.

  • i'm going to watch john boorman's excalibur

  • good one coco! 4 u, the music IS the thing. "Higher purpose" 4 me is plot. Significance of S's death. My opera teacher at Fairfield U. Lillian Loveday of Opera News would have agreed with this from Funk & Wagnall: W created an 'entirely new musico-dramatic form ... a fundamental principle of which is the ... subservience of ALL the arts involved, INCLUDING the music, to the DRAMATIC needs of the story." (Emphasis added). ... The increased dramatic unity of post-Wagnerian opera was one conse

  • beautiful, but dreamy, slow pace does drain out some of the essential drama ... Siegfried may have died, but ... but ... (there is some sort of transfiguration here, some higher purpose ... ). Wagner experts recommend the Stokowski and the Fuhrtwangler versions to convey this higher purpose ... give 'em a try.

  • @atlatahuac lol at your 'higher purposes'; I just heard great music and that's the only 'high purpose' that means anything here.

  • 1. Furtwangler: Siegfried's Funeral March from Gotterdammerung SLOW MOVING?????????? | THE MUSIC IS SO STRONG, LIKE GIVING YOU A MENTAL PUNCH, A SLAP ON THE FACE… YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT HIT YOU! SCORE 9.75 OF 10

  • Berlin philharmonic orchestra played it in 1945 as the dream of Europe was falling apart.

  • Very haunting. An aura of German mythology and mysticism. Unfortunate how this, and many of Wagner's magnificent works were seized upon by the Nazi's as theme music for the pageantry glorifying the dream of aryanism. Comforting to know that modern Germany has by and large rejected that dark past and can celebrate Wagner and the other giants of German literary and musical heritage in a free democracy,

  • @CelticCross777 Very true though the human race never learns and seems bent on its own destruction but on a cheerier note great awe inducing music

  • What a stupid nonsense sir. Modern Germany surely is the greatest piece of shit that has ever been on this Earth and Richard Wagner would be turning in his grave if he knew what Germany has become. Furthermore, modern Germany doesn't celebrate anything. Modern Germany rejects the original idea of Wagner's works, especially the Germanic mythology and patriotism (f.e. in the Meistersinger). You cannot watch a single Wagner opera without an idiot referring to "those evil ideals."

  • Furthermore, "free democracy" doesn't have anything to do with German art, German music or German literature. You say the evil, evil Nazis used those works for propaganda purposes--but you do the exact same thing by mentioning "democracy" although it doesn't ahve anything to do with the matter. May modern Germany disappear soon. Then, German art, music and literature will be free.

  • @HerrWagnerfreund

Is there a doubt that nazis were stinking pieces of shit?

  • Yeah.

  • @HerrWagnerfreund

Well, whoever doubts that is just a stupid, ignorant, uneducated cocksucking piece of shit himself. Hint hint.
