As Man stands to Nature, so stands Art to Man. Man, or more particularly the Volk (the community of 'men who feel a common and collective want') creates Art to fill that want. Those who feel no want are outsiders to the Volk and crave only pointless luxury - true Art thus comes only from the atavistic needs of the Volk." - Richard Wagner, The Artwork of the Future (1849).
I always thought that there were parallels between Brit space rock band and Sun Ra. Sun Ra being the superior one musically, but Hawkwind definitely had the better light show;-)
@4578a This performance was but the 2nd performance of a 3-month tour for the band. Perhaps needless to say, it was a mind-boggling experience for me. No doubt, I would not be the musician nor the person that I am today, had I been anywhere other than there, at the point in time.
@SuperBoggins Sun Ra's performances were never dull! As for the demographic mix of Sun Ra's audiences, there were no limits, no barriers; although a mostly white audience wasn't uncommon in Europe :o)
musicaly how much of this was scripted/writen as opposed to pure improve?
I used to play some and run a recording studio. I have done some outside stuff but its always studio creations, never toured live although I have done some live work.
@zencat999 From one moment to the next, one never quite knew where things were gonna go, in Ra's band. "Scripted" would be much too strong a term to use... What happened was more like one having to remain awake and to respond to stimuli from various directions, as they occurred. I guess you could call that improv; although it was different from anything I'd done before (or since).
This is good, if you like weird stuff like this, check out modern day, - Bort's Minort .

I saw the "Sun" many times in NYC. No place in the galaxy quite like the Arkestra. Thanks for posting.

This video brings back good memories; I played bass(guitar) on this performance. I was wondering if a video would ever surface :o).

:o) It was an exciting performance; and only the 2nd performance of a 3-month tour throughout Europe. Never a dull moment...

@MrDangerbird7 the excitement shows. Wonderful. Sometimes you jazzers are too cool to enjoy yourselves but not here.
It looks like an all-white crowd - was that usual?
