@dorispedraza John Williams. frequently, but not always, the advertised music is the artist actually playing. A guitarist named Claude Ciari also released a version of this recently in Japan through RCA. You might look into it -he has a tube channel here as well! I've got 550 playlists on my channel that some people have liked as well. My thanks to the uploader, added this to my guitar favorites. Chuck
@dorispedraza Well this particular version is the one that played on the official The Deer Hunter movie soundtrack. However it was first used in the 1970 British movie called The Walking Stick. And the guitarist was indeed John Williams.
this piece was also used at the end of a British Kid's Art show in the 70's called VisonOn as they displayed galleries of work...that was my first introduction to it as a piece of music...since seeing it in Deer Hunter however I am forever reminded of the futility of war; the juxtaposition being the show was on TV before the evening news on a Sunday in the early 70's...what did we see a lot of on those news bulletins? The Vietnam War right in our living rooms.
very well done no more to say. all you people out there, listen to this and you'll know what true music is. and what a great musician sounds like. i play violin 4 years and piano 3 1/2 years. is there this song for violin or piano?
This piece transports and soothes... brings a cathartic wave of tears... it's so sad yet tender and ministering, transcendent... straight from the spirit and quiets the soul... peace.
This beautiful song stirs serious and sad memories for me- The friends I lost in Nam, and what for?? Great movie, but this song haunts me like no other. I cry everytime I hear it.
(1of3)This song has some history, it's a beautiful but sad melody. This song is a classical guitar piece written by Stanley Myers. It's was recorded by classical guitarist John Williams long before the 1979 film "The Deer Hunter" in which an instrumental version by John Williams was played on guitar.
(2of3)The song was originally written for piano but at John Williams request, Stanley Myers re-wrote it for guitar and expanded it. After this it was first used for the film "The Walking Stick" in 1970. In 1973 Cleo Laine wrote lyrics and recorded the song using the title "He Was Beautiful" accompanied by John Williams. Following the release of the film "The Deer Hunter" in 1979 the song became a UK Top 20 hit.
(3of3)Two other versions also made the Top 20 the same year. Another instrumental recording by "The Shadows" with an electric guitar played by Hank Marvin reached #9 in the UK Singles chart and a vocal version using Cleo Laine's lyrics by Iris Williams. The song was also recorded by Paul Potts on his debut album "One Chance." There is also a gospel version set to Cavatina called "Beautiful," the author is Billy Evmur and it appears in the "Dove On A Distant Oak Tree" collection.
Then, my dear Tammy, why not just stear clear of the song and spare yourself the hassle of leaving such inane comments?
And I find this song relaxing. Like a warm summerbreeze or waves crashing on the shore. It's a song you listen to with your eyes closed, just letting the melody carry you.
If you notice the picture, you'll see that is of deep sea creatures (but I don't know what they're called.)
I think he mis-typed "Deep Hunter" on purpose. I doubt he's gonna change it (though I wish he would for the sake of searching.) This is one of the nicest renditions posted on YouTube.
how do we create such beauty you ask? It happens when we are inspired by love and emotion and we use all the gifts that God gives us to bring joy happyness and contentment to one another.
No actually I'm Catholic, and a guitarist of 35 years who believes that the greatest gifts
like musical tallent or the appreciation of it come from God as a beautiful way to love and serve each other. Its no good if we cant share it....thats all. PEACE to you.
I saw Santana play this a the bandshell at the State Fair of Texas about maybe 18 years ago. There probably were'nt even 10,000 people there and no one payed attention when he played it but I had a recorder hidden and recorded it on cassette.Probably the most beautiful song I ever heard Santana do in 39 years of seeing him in concert. The tape got lost.
Wow that is something friend. But are you really saying that it was more beuatiful than Samba Pa Ti? Respect no matter friend. Bloody shame about that tape!!!!
The most beatifull song in the world. I thought nothing could match The Godfather theme then I heard John Williams Cavatina in The Deer Hunter it gave me chills its so easy made but still its marvoulus and it flows so light and beatifull like a river and its only barely one instrument used in the song. Its only one thing to call it, a masterpiece. "To Nick" Cavatina starts, I cried im a guy who never cries in films but music can make me do it when its this beautiful.
Hm, nah, she plays it note by note, whereas I heard this stunning new guitarist on the BBC the other night called Milica Ilich?, anyhow, she's made her own version and when you listen to her myspace, I was blown away. She composes all her own stuff. I reckon give it 2 years she will be the classical guitarist everyone will talk about for then 30 yrs. Xuefei's good but lacks originality.
You have a good argument.I had the pleasure of working with John a few years ago.I was setting up a guitar in my shop and was playing a piece when he snuck up on me and says, "real nice, I'm John Williams."
Cavatina was actually first used in the film "The Walking Stick" - 1970 starring Samantha Eggar & David Hemmings. Classic film & the music always reminds me of this rather than the Deer Hunter - less violent too!
most soothing yes, most soothing indeed most soothing, simply soothing yes soothing the most soothing thing i have ever soothed to, quite possibly the most soothing thing ever soothed. i will never sooth this way again
one afternoon, last july I played cavatina at Manny's shop in N.Y.City and everybody in the shop stop in front of me haring this nice song, it was a great emotion to me
if you dont like this you should be dragged from your house and shot with balls of your own shit! in front of your family! ok a tad extreme i know but really..........
Cavatina was written by Stanley Myers (1933-1993) and is performed here by John Williams of Australia. This is the title theme from "The Deer Hunter".

This one is perhaps the most refined version...but since it is a soundtrack, I would expect it to be. Peo Kindgren's version (look in the related videos for this) is also very good.
Beautifully haunting melody played very well. I wish I could disassociate it from the movie (The Deer Hunter) that left me with nightmares for months.
I'm with you. It's very hard to disassociate it, once you've seen the movie. I can no longer listen to it, for it reminds me too much of the dark moments of American history. And, I was there.
Do you know where I could hear this? I am a huge fan of Cleo's work but I have not seen nor heard of her for years. Is she still performing? Isn't this one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music ever?
The original by Mayer is in this tempo. The Deer Hunter Theme is a bit slower and some strings are added. Its also played with two guitars I think. But this version..hmm I dont really know?
Walking into the 42nd st. subway in a very bad mood I tensed up at the crowds and the whole post-9/11 suspicion of everyone with backpacks and the bumping and jostling. Ready to strike out at any provocation: Suddenly, the etherial sounds of the 'Cavatina' from a street performer trying to do his best and after a few seconds I realized he hadn't hit a bad note yet. Amazing, transporting, emotionally nuclear. We are better than the criminals who perpetuate the wars. This song is a Godsend.
brilliant!!

Do you know where I could hear this? I am a huge fan of Cleo's work but I have not seen nor heard of her for years. Is she still performing? Isn't this one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music ever?

Why is this song so fast? A slower version would be more touching.

The original by Mayer is in this tempo. The Deer Hunter Theme is a bit slower and some strings are added. Its also played with two guitars I think. But this version..hmm I dont really know?

Check out Xue-Fei Yang's version. Really slow. Another good renditrion is Ana Vidovic.
