This is so evocative of the Northern summer; so fleeting and joyous... and over all too soon! It sets us up so nicely for the autumnal feel of the slightly wistful final movement. Love it - my favourite of the seven symphonies, although it's never enjoyed as much popularity as some of the others, it would seem, which is a pity I think.

This movement is rather nostalgic, giving us a backward glance at the Third Symphony. The mood is very similar.
