A raccoon can be completely domesticated, bred for it or not, i have had cats for years, and one year i left the kittens be instead of keeping them with me, you cant even come near them and they were bred to be "domesticated". A "domesticated" house pet laborador weve had for years ripped my lil bros ear off, any animal or human can attack you at anytime, being "domesticated" means you are lucky and the animal decided it just wasnt going ton attack or never had the chance, which any animal can
It's obvious that you love this animal, so it is truly a good pet. I did not want to argue with you about whether the raccoon was tame or not, but wasn't he biting you in this short clip? I guess even puppies do that. Maybe this raccoon is one of those that could be selected for breeding to domesticate. However, one doesn't see raccoons generally raised and sold as pets. There must be a reason for that, maybe because of the dangerous parasite that they carry in their feces.
Although a lot of what you said is true, and many wild animals can't be well tamed. It is not uncommon for Raccoons to be kept as pets in certain states. In fact, some states it is illegal, more than likely because of the high risk in Rabies and the dangerous parasite that can only be contracted if someone were to eat Raccoon feces. Also, Exotic Vets can be located across the states for Vaccines for the parasite as well as other diseases. There is a local Exotic Vet in my town
But again, you're not wrong that a raccoon can not be 100% tamed. There are risks. One tame raccoon may not attack an owner, but a second or third "tamed" raccoon might turn on an owner one day. It's possible and always does happen. Yes it's true that they can grow up to being a family pet, but it's highly false if people believe they can be domesticated. No one will ever know when a cute pet raccoon decides to take an ear off of their owner. That day will come eventually.
A baby raccoon somehow got into my house that me and my partner share. From what I've read, raccoons can be very vicious and feisty when they're scared, but this one seemed very friendly, because it sat on our couch and cuddled with us when we were watching Animal Planet (of all the tv shows we watched lol), but I still wouldn't keep a raccoon for a pet, mainly because of their teeth and claws, just like Koala bears :-)
@protectorofillinois3 It might have had rabies! That can make animals act tame because they are spaced out. They have sharp teeth and claws, too, so watch out. Ouch!
"Peta friendly" not much point in being friendly to those idiots, they try to make the claim that Mario's magical Tanuki form is promoting the skinning of Raccoons, they're so smart....
I love Raccoons though, he really seems to love playing around XD
Wow, we had a pet coon when we were kids. They are so much fun, like a cat or a dog but different too. She slept in the bed with us, loved watermelon and the swimming pool. She watched my little brother being potty trained and started using his potty. She learned to get a treat out of dad's shirt pocket when he came home from work every day. She lived about 10 years. Thanks for the video man, made me think about great memories I haven't thought about in a long time. Snif!
Raccoons can make nifty companions, IF you know what you're doing.
Raccoons have this unfair stigma of being dirty and diseased. even PET coons are assumed to have rabies or something. and i've heard all manner of "scare tactics" to discourage people from getting close to them
Every animal on this planet can be domesticated if you catch them as a baby. Some animals are just harder to keep domesticated than others, and have a higher potential tendency to go wild, which makes them unsuitable as pets.
Smart for releasing it. They are truly wild animals and the risk of parasitic infection from their feces is very real. Most people don't understand that domestication is a very long process of selective breeding to choose the animal types that have the ability to interact, understand and communicate to some extent with humans. A wild animal has none of these capabilities and are for the most part, untrainable, which is why they are classified as wild.
@beigecamouflage That's not true at all. We owned a raccoon and he was domesticated within 3 months of owning him. He interacted with us, lived in the house, understood commands, etc.
@FMAluver14 You might have kept a raccoon as a pet, and it may have learned to act friendly, but it is not the same as a truly domesticated animal, such as cats or dogs, which are the result of selective breeding through many generations to produce an animal that is neither aggressive nor timid. Animals such as your pet raccoon typically never become sensitive the feelings of their human caretakers, and will always bite, run about and ignore their keepers wishes, doing what they want to do.
@beigecamouflage You're actually VERY wrong. He acted just like a puppy, he loved cuddling, being held, etc. He NEVER tried to bite us, he never tried to harm us. Nothing. And he responded to our feelings just fine. He understood commands and obeyed them. He was amazing. So unless you can talk from experience, don't tell me I'm wrong, cause its quite the other way. Next you'll tell me that snakes are the same :\ And not every animal is the same as what you think, as learned from experience.
That is like a cross between a retarded cat and dog! Coons don't really have the mental capacity to be domesticated all the way.Funny as a temporary pet for you tube though. Maybe rabies shot before next time?
@oppernockitytunes Raccoons are actually smarter than cats and dogs youre right about them not being domesticated but that's just because they are still wild and that hasn't been bred out of them yet.
@TheMadChiliDogFucker.....seriously...you took the time to fully type out an insult that perhaps only made you and your ill-fated friends laugh...sorry to hear that your amusement is easily attained.. i thought it was pretty chill this guy took his time to save a creature of this world...it;s fucks like you that shoot innocent chipmunks in the woods.. fuckin prick... instead of growing up..grow a conscience and read between the line...innocence
@claritonclear: Don't *breathe* near coon poop. The parasite can become airborne, and can be breathed in by a new host. If you have racoons using your attic or barn as a latrine, you need to be very careful in cleaning it out -- mask and gloves are a good beginning, and washing thoroughly after just in case.
@PeakOilCountdown Um, I'm pretty sure raccoons can be kept as pets, my family used to own one and we had him for about a year and half and none of us ever got sick or died :)
does it sit on your shoulders and rub your head? a family memeber of mine had one that did that (my mom told me stories) it also made her run into a wall and chattered at her. lolz.
Obviosly the guy wouldn't play with the raccon if it had rabies -.- That is one cool raccon! When you throw him on the couch it's like a furry basket ball xD
My friends family had one and raised it. They never let it go and whenever they would leave the little guy he would freak out and TEAR up the house.. it was only sweet to his mother and father and it pretty much made them shut-ins. :/
All animals bite. Rabies? Depends on what other animals it messes with. Raccoons aren't born with rabies, it usually comes from being bit by another animal that does, like cats and dogs and how they get rabies.
So cute! Strange as it may be, I live in a rural area but have never seen a raccoon (other than in zoos and such). Armadillos by the dozens, even a possum or two...once, I even came across a large gator crossing the road but never a raccoon. They must be in hiding. ;)
I know someone who breeds them, she has never had a aggressive raccoon nor has anyone who ever purchased a raccoon from her contact her and tell her there raccoon became agressive

@claritonclear yo dude. that asshole had no right to say that shit. what you guys are doing is god's work. Every creature deserves life and you are giving that extremely cute racoon that wonderful gift and i think that is just awesome. You guys rock! :)
@claritonclear My uncle had two of them that were runts abandoned by their mothers. They lived to be pretty old and never got mean. The only problem with them was that they were very smart and could open pretty much any food container. We called them "cereal killers" because any box of cereal not locked in a pantry was devoured.
i just love too se that a pet is so happy for a human! that only means that the human had been good to the animal! you are a fantastic person! grat job! :-D
I live in SC and I had a baby Raccoon for almost a year and he turned into something totally different than what I found him as. He was a cute, sweet, wonderful pet that slept on my pillow every night when he was a young..until he started growing older. He became mean, bit us, growled, and wanted to leave because of the "call of the wild" was stronger than him wanting to stay. I never saw him again after mating season. A friend of mine had one that was caged up and it bit her finger off.
Why do people assume animals are dumb? Why do we think that wild animals aren't smart because we can't train them to do what we want them to do? There is also the mind-set that domesticated animals are dumb because they just eat and stand around in paddocks untill we kill them for food. All animals are smart in their own way. It took the first settlers of Australia about 100 years to find a way across the Blue Mountains, it took escaped cows about 30 years to find a way around... (Whose smart?)
OMG that is the cutest freaking thing I've ever seen and I laughed soooooo hard!!!! If I ever find a raccoon baby I'm totally raising one... I just hope my cats will be okay with it. LMAO!!! SO CUTE!!!
i know somebody that has a pet racoon found it on the side of the road good pet fully tame nothing wrong with it i think its great ...... is it house trained or litter trained???
@vinngrizzle it was house trained, it would call to go outside when it wanted out, the litter box in the house was to messy. we have a couple of dogs and the raccoon would go out when the dogs went out.
4 words raccoons,are,very,cute. 10 words raccoon,awsome,cute,interesting,sweet,cool,adorable,act,like,cats......And also 1 more word.......L-O-V-A-B-L-E!....................sometimes
how did you got that raccoon? do you take care of it as if it was a dog? Im thinking maybe get one in the future and i need to know if it is almost the same as having a dog.. answer please :)
@judithestherbairluj the mother had been killed and we found this when it was only a week or so old. this coon has been released into the wild a few years ago, we had it for almost a year and it got aggresive. they are fun for awhile but always have their wild tendancies. i wouldnt recommend getting one.
What can be more adorable, than a cross-breed between a dog and a lemur? XD I want one :))

@claritonclear My uncle had two of them that were runts abandoned by their mothers. They lived to be pretty old and never got mean. The only problem with them was that they were very smart and could open pretty much any food container. We called them "cereal killers" because any box of cereal not locked in a pantry was devoured.

@destinyanna
yes that is true. I once saw a raccoon nearly drown a full grown German Shepherd when I was little. They are NOT to be played with.

(Whose smart?)

i know somebody that has a pet racoon found it on the side of the road good pet fully tame nothing wrong with it i think its great ...... is it house trained or litter trained???
vinngrizzle 11 months ago 3
@vinngrizzle it was house trained, it would call to go outside when it wanted out, the litter box in the house was to messy. we have a couple of dogs and the raccoon would go out when the dogs went out.

That looked like one very happy coon. Thanks for releasing it too. Many people don't get the fact that they are wild. Really, a great vid.

how did you got that raccoon? do you take care of it as if it was a dog? Im thinking maybe get one in the future and i need to know if it is almost the same as having a dog.. answer please :)
judithestherbairluj 1 year ago 3
@judithestherbairluj the mother had been killed and we found this when it was only a week or so old. this coon has been released into the wild a few years ago, we had it for almost a year and it got aggresive. they are fun for awhile but always have their wild tendancies. i wouldnt recommend getting one.
