  • Also, if you watch the time in the corner of the video, you can yell its not edited. Retard.

  • Lol, someone has a one way ticket to hell, and when he gets there, demons will smash his tounge with a hammer until he ' softens up'. ASSHOLE.

  • cruel bastard!

  • Anyone who believes this was 'edited' to make this sicko look bad obviously hasn't watched it closely... there's no way you can edit that kind of abuse out of a video. Absolutely horrifying.

  • that idiot is violating the very basics of REAL horsemanship... a shame that such people walk around and sell their "knowledge"

  • That ain't pressure and release that's pain pain pain submission through intimidation and threat of pain.Instant quick lazy shortcut results typical human I want it and I want it now.Guess he never heard of Ray Hunt,Bill and Tom Dorrance.Three of the finest horsemen that ever walked gods green earth. They were true dyed in the wool horsemen.

  • in addition he obviously doesn't know hpw to read or train horses - so who is this cruel man?

  • What a f****** as**** :((( With a halter...well maybe....but not in that situation!!!! Never ever with a snaffle!!! Think the horse didn't know what was expected, the horse softens his neck and yields!!!! This man is really ignorant!

  • I'd like to soften him up with a couple of bricks. Jerk :(

  • That poor horse!!!! That isn't pressure! Oh my god!!! That is not how you teach a horse to back up that is how you scare them and get them to be afraid of the bit!!! Omfg

  • this is so wrong this man should never be allowed to train any horse, how cruel

  • This man is bully not a horse trainer .

  • What's unfortunate is that this is everywhere in the horse world. APHA is just as bad. I quit for a long time because of that. Even if a horse doesn't respond at first, you never jerk a horse's mouth so hard that it's audible! I'd rather see the horse hit across the chest when he doesn't listen to te pressure, but even that has a line that shouldn't be crossed.

  • you do not teach a horse to give to pressure by slamming a bit into its delicate mouth....Cleve fyi you teach a horse to give to pressure with a halter and lead....

  • If he EVER did that to my horse ...Cleve would find himself on the ground so fast with his mouth bleeding. This is NOT anywhere near appropriate to do to any horse!!!!

  • No way I would ever let this man touch a horse of mine. This is abuse, no other word for it.

  • OMG i get my horse to rein back on the ground with only slight backwards pressure as if i was asking for a ren=in back when riding im shocked that that man gets paid to teach this STOP STOP STOP we can do this with kindness and get a better result

  • Comment removed

  • When I say it was edited I meant that it is a 30 second clip out of a whole clinic - maybe an hour or more?

  • @spudth According to owner, horse's mouth was bleeding and took a week to heal.

  • Now if you watch very carefully on this clip that was carefully edited to make cleve look bad. He asks for back with light bit pressure. He explains that the horse is resisting and show how he is just bending his neck. he bangs on the horse, from the ground, from beside him which is way different than being on his back using all your weight. You also see him slightly release the pressure at 0:16 when the horse steps back - the horse found the answer- next ask th hors scrambles backward.

  • @spudth Thank you for commenting. The clips are unedited.

  • @GoingForBroken When I say edited I mean you only show 30 seconds of the clinic. Show some more of the clinic to be more fair. Horse training is about pressure and release, pressure and release. If we were all bleeding hearts we'd never get on a horses back -- that is unnatural and cruel. Try carrying something over 20% of your weight on your back for a few hours. Our horses would be in pastures and we would be lucky to get near them.

  • Check out all the bug clinicians. Pressure and release. Pressure and release. There are posts on the internet claiming how cruel Clinton Anderson is with horses. He's one of the top clinicians out there right now. Pressure and release.......

  • This guy is awesome. He does what is shown in the video just a few times and the horse is good for a long long time. The horse could have responded initially. Clinton Anderson will whack a horse on its butt as hard as he can - why he asks - because I can he answers. John Lyons says if a horse does something dangerous you have exactly three seconds to kill it - if you don't kill it you have to stop.

  • this is terrible

  • What an EFFING JACKASS!!!!

  • One day I hope someone walks up to this douchenozzle and asks him to do something in a language or with a gesture that he doesn't quite understand. And when he doesn't do what they ask, I hope they punch him in the mouth over and over until he does.

  • Dude, you can teach a horse to back up without using the bit at all...

  • This is harsh.

  • Totally un-called for! He went straight for hard jerking on the mouth. He's an evil son of a *itch to treat a horse like that... If I were in the stands or that were my horse I would have crawled over that fence and pushed him to the side and released that horse from the training session and took it out of the arena.. That man should never be able to touch a horse again..

  • Wow just totally changed my opinion of him. What a jerk! That is not training that is abuse.

  • Are you friggen stupid man. What the hell are you doing to that horse. DumbChit

  • *GASP* my God!

  • I can't believe this guy is teaching people to do that!

  • not ok, i just got a totally different feeling for him after watching this

  • I can't tell what kind of bit he's got on the horse, but what do you wanna bet it's something good and nasty?

  • There was no pressure involved, just a bunch of jerking. This guy is a genuine idot. but then again so are the people who let him work with their horses. I would so much let him see my horse and over my dead body would he handle him.

  • let me put a metal bar in YOUR mouth mr. wells and yank on it with all my strenght, PLEASE!

  • DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!

  • For those of you that say this is the must disgusting thing you've ever seen let me just say you've not seen anything yet. I know this man and I've seen him do far, far worse to horses. And sadly he's not in the minority. I left the industry horrified and disgusted many years ago after having the opportunity to intern with a few of these big name Texas quarter horse trainers. I do not know how they sleep at night. The AQHA did slap him on the wrist last year, but he hasn't changed.

  • this is the most disgusting thing i have ever seen. i want to put a peice of metal in his mouth and yank on it like that and then see what he thinks. "How do you get that horse to back up so soft..." he scared the shit out of it, the poor horse was runing away from him. ass wipe.

  • Clearly this horse hasn't a clu what Wells is initially asking of him....

  • @crstardust well he kinda knows now. Since I have not seen the whole video I am not sure if this horses even knew how to back up. I agree that was a bit to much yanking. I spur trained my horse in the past. He new that a spur rolling up his sides meant back up. The hard the spur the faster he would back up. Saved his mouth, kept him soft. And no he did not get dead sided.

  • @EveryonesQT

Sorry, I'm not a fan of spur stops or slow downs..............

  • Do you actually watch your own videos? Can't you see what you're doing to the horse? Geeze, what an idiot!!

  • What an utter useless excuse of a horse man!!! He calls that softening, what a joke and yes I can do better.

  • Everyone please respond to the ApHC (Appaloosa Horse Club) concerning this individual and his membership within this breed registry. Whether you are an Appaloosa owner or not we need many voices to express their views on why the ApHC allows this man to remain a part of their organization. Remember a good horse is never a bad color.....If he does this kind of training in front of an audience what is he doing to horses behind closed barn doors?

  • @Appys4u

Who and how do I get in touch with someone? I'll be more than happy to report what I've seen this man do in person!

  • This MORON was just at the ApHC World Show and won the Open Mens' Western Pleasure class. I can't believe it, he was actually allowed to participate ???? I wouldn't let this IDIOT within 500 miles of my horses, dogs or chickens. I do have a couple rattlers up on the hill that might teach him a thing or two about respect....

  • what a JERK!!

  • That is among the most disgusting things I have ever seen.

  • Bastard! That is abuse, plain and simple.

  • This is truly pitiful. Who in their right mind would allow this man to train any live animal????

  • GOD - how many ignoramuses out their are actually paying this man to abuse their horses? They should do time, just like him.

  • what a dick.

  • Also suspended from the NSBA. What about all the folks who watch this guy that he leads them to believe he is a horse trainer, so they go home and try this crap. They may get hurt or ruin some good horses. This is the kinda crap that leads to the government stepping in to applying rules and regulations on this industry. Lets' police ourselves and run this guy out of town with a spade bit in his mouth that is tighened down....Go watch some of his other training videos !

  • @Appys4u

He hasn't been suspended from NSBA, and they've made it very clear they will not suspend him, too.

  • If I was the owner of that horse I wouldn't have just stood there. That poor horse's mouth.

  • What a no-talent hack! Now I understand why he's suspended from AQHA. He needs to learn how to control his anger and not abuse horses. That is NOT the way to teach a horse to back. And I think I can say this, having spent over 30 years myself as a professional trainer, showing at the National level.

  • this is why i refused to sell a horse to a lady that idolised mr shithead here. i'd bet anything that horse's mouth was bleedin after that, and i'd bet my life that mr shithead didnt give a crap and left the horse to suffer.

  • Cleve--you really are the biggest piece of shit in the horse world. I have taught my horses to back up by barely touching them--and it took all of about 5 minutes. If you have to use that much "brute force" to teach such a simple task, then you're also a dumbass. Please leave horses alone.

  • a dressage whip would have been MUCH more effective LOL

  • You know, a lotta people ask me "How do you get trainers to back up so soft?" Well, you take some barbed wire, bit o' thin hot wire wrapped in with it and attach it to them tiny little man bits...

Couple sessions later, presto viola! Your precious Cleve Wells will not only cower in fear, but back up with such speed and grace, he'll set his own boots a'fire.

  • @MissVM Love it!

  • poor horse =[, someone should put a bit in his mouth and yank it a few times

  • What an ignorant ass. Poor horse.

  • ¨Teach him to give to pressure" The understatement of the year...I vote to castrate the son of a bitch!!

  • This is so sad. No respect for horses. "How do you get that horse to back up so soft?" Hmm..Let's see. Session after session of yanking and popping him in the mouth until he's bleeding and so scared that he has no choice but to back up...This guy's an asshole.

  • @alexisfowler93

So, the results (horse backs up, but was left with bleeding mouth) justifies the means? By that criteria, there is never any reason to be kind and humane to anyone or anything. I expect better from a 'living legend' World Champion.

  • Comment removed

  • @alexisfowler93

Excellent example of someone who denies abuse when they're looking right at it. The horse's owner reported that his mouth was bleeding.

  • @alexisfowler93 Are you fucking kidding me! Your seriouse! Ok but know wouldnt you like a horse to do it without being scared to death of you? Once you do something like that that horse is always going to have that in his head and may never be able to trust someone now. Wouldnt you like to work with your horse instead of against? Wouldnt you want to have your horse be able to trust you instead do things you ask just becasue hes afraid of you?

  • Comment removed

  • @alexisfowler93 Are you fucking kidding me! Your seriouse! Wouldnt you want your horse to work with you because he trusts you? Or would you like your horse to be always a little uptight about it and only doing it because hes afraid of you? Thats what realy horseman are about! Not ripping their mouths off!

  • Comment removed

  • @alexisfowler93 So that gives you the right to rip his mouth apart? If your suppose to be that good of a trainer then you shouldnt need to. And obviously you would like to take the shortcut for your sake and not for the horses.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @alexisfowler93 lets put a metal bit in your mouth and jerk you arround for a bit and see how you like it. I have seen first hand what horses become after this so called "successful" training. Its not pretty. This man has no respect for the animals given to him to trian. I dont know what makes me sicker him or the idiots who spend the money to have him beat the shit out of - i mean train their horses. anyone who supports him needs their head checked

  • Comment removed

  • @alexisfowler93 It was just an exprerssion . I have also trained western pleasure horses and I started all of them with halters and leadropes. Why get this harsh if you can do it with the least ammount of pressure first? there is a threshold as to what is too much and I would say that you and mister Wells cross it. Horses have been doing our bidding for a long time. They deserve more respect than this. Fick dich !!

  • @alexisfowler93 Sorry if I offended you I got a bit heated. I dont train many western horses I am more of an english rider , and as far as my skills go they must not be that bad if Brian Cudmore (Karen Cudmore's brother) wanted me to work with him. I am just saying that there is more than one way to do the same thing and if you could do it without jerking on a horse so hard you break their jaw would'nt you? Again sorry for the foul language I got mad but in a way it was asked for I am done here

  • @TheRammsteinluver

I like your thoughts on training; you seem very empathetic.

  • @GoingForBroken Thank you, I was taught that less is more, same with horses. Why use more force than you have to? I have recently been following Pat Parelli's training methods and it has opened my eyes to a whole new world of relationships with horses. Take the time it takes so it takes less time :D

  • @TheRammsteinluver

Just my personal opinion: the core basis of Parelli's program is sound. But it has become a cult. Pat and Linda have become arrogant to the point where they will not admit when they have screwed up, which makes them look a lot worse than if they would just do the honorable thing and admit they screwed up and then make it right.

  • Stacy Westfall would be a good NH style of trainer to learn from. I've watched the Andrea Fappani videos, and HIGHLY recommend them! He's a Reiner but his methods are applicable to many other disciplines also.

  • (FYI: The horse's owner reported that his mouth was bleeding. At another clinic, someone recorded video of the same trainer drawing blood on a horse by spurring it. That video was sent to the AQHA.)

  • Not only is this h=guy and idot, but so is all the people going to his clinics

  • if i were a horse id bite his head off

  • And this is how he breaks horses jaws (or at least I assume so, I suppose he could have done it while riding him).

I can only imagine he has some nasty bit in that horse's mouth. Since on his site, three out of the four snaffle bits he sells, are either twisted wire or slow twists. I can only imagine to sort of pain being inflicted on this horse's mouth.

  • Thats a bit of an over kill dont ya think Mr Wells? ever heard of ground work and pulling, my god and your a pro?? Ill keep my money thanks

  • A disgusting display of sadism and non-horsemanship.

  • absolutely shocking, that horse should have kicked the crap out of him for that. He should be banned from touching horses.

  • Oh geez what a doof

  • he has been suspended from aqha for these things

  • What kind of an idiot would send there horse anywere near him?

  • CLINIC? LOL THAT´S PROBABLY WHERE THAT HORSE ENDED UP!!!

  • Keep this guy away from my horses!!!!!!

  • holy shit... you call that giving to pressure? I call that giving to pain

  • Someone out to jerk on Cleve Well's tender bits just as hard as he jerked that poor horse's mouth.

  • If I was that horse I would have kicked the drap out of him for that. That is aweful I cannot believe he was ever allowed to train. Cleve Wells gives the AQHA and western riding in general a bad name

  • that is horrible he should have started with a halter and should not have been yanking on tha horses mouth like that

  • This is terrible. Poor horse.

  • Candy Wilcox reported (Oct 98):

    >

Mr. Wells was riding and training on a black horse

the poor creature had hide hanging down its sides about 6-8 inches, several strips on each side just swinging in the wind, bright white/pink skin, a circle of approximately 8 inches in diameter, shining against that black coat...and HE CONTINUED TO RIDE THE HORSE!!!!

  • Candy Wilcox con't:

    >saw Mr. Wells really "schooling" on the horse, in other words, basically spurring him to pieces, and the horse was acting up, trying to get away from him (I would be, too), and one trainer said "Cleve better be careful."

    >By the time we could FINALLY get show management to do anything the horse had disappeared, and without proof, AQHA would not do a thing, even with all the witnesses!

  • Isn't he the trainer who was charged with abusing a young horse, (the one with the oozing and puss-filled spur cuts and the broken jaw bone pieces in its mouth) leaving it tied just beyond reach of its water? Is this how a horse's jaw can be broken? If he does this on camera, think of what he must do OFF camera!

  • Why oh why is not legal to tell him to do something in a language he doesn't speak and then beat the hell out of him for not doing it. It's EXACTLY what he is doing.

  • Savage.

  • I think he has trainer burn out...NOT GOOD..he needs to try a new career. But that won't happened he knows nothing else

  • First of all, he did not need to start him backing up with a BIT in his mouth, how about a rope halter, that applies pressure at his points and NOT in his mouth... I have a 23 mos old colt that backs wonderfully, and we started on the GROUND from day one - never ever with a bit in his mouth.

  • "TEACH" him to give to pressure....hmmm, I don't know about you, but I didn't see a whole lotta "teaching" involved!

  • This guy is a sadist - like a teacher who runs his class like a tinpot dictator, taunting and humiliating his pupils.

  • What kinda of crap is this guy doing?

    He has issues....

  • If that's how to get my horse to back up "soft" then I think I'd rather bypass the backing altogether . . . I have too much respect for myself and my animals to do something like that to them.

    Jerkoff.

  • This guy is a genuine piece of shit.

  • Revolting.

  • I'm sorry, but what the FUCKING HELL is this guys problem? Yeah, you ass, it gets results. But it also KILLS the horse. How is RIPPING A HORSES MOUTH OUT gonna get 'results'!? yeah, it will in five years when somebody has to RETRAIN it, or even worse? when it's going to slaughter cause nobody could deal with it. I'm fine with popping a horse with a HALTER but /never/ with a bit. NEVER. A bit is a COMMUNICATION tool, not a friggin punishment! Cleve Wells can go die in a fucking hole. Ass..

  • oh, and to add to the halter thing. I'm fine with popping a horse with a halter ONCE or TWICE. But /only/ that. Not jamming on the horses face- like Cleve Wells. And the halter popping? Yeah, that's used for saying "hey, you. pay attention, please." not "BACK UP! BACK UP OR I WILL KILL YOU!" Cleve Wells needs to go die. and never be around horses. ever.

  • People pay this man money to watch him "train" horses?! Hey Cleve, this isn't the 1800's any more! We know how to make them back up and respect space without floating their teeth and making them afraid of the bit. I don't prescribe to "natural horsemanship" at all, but all my horses are trained to back up softly, and I've NEVER banged their faces to accomplish it. EVER. I've seen more of this dillhole's work, and he just uses scare tactics and bullying instead of patience and knowledge.

  • this is absolutely dispicable, and anyone using these methods should be ashamed. cleve wells needs to be put out of his misery

  • You fucking bastard!!!!! That horse should kick your teeth out!!!!!!

  • You fucking retarded bully!!!! That horse should kick your teeth out!!!!!

  • wow yanking on his mouth REALLY seems to be working for you..not! you should really consider changing your career for the sake of the horse. thats just disgusting

  • This man is an absolute retard. Yanking on a horse's mouth does nothing but make the horse resent you.

  • dump man

  • Are you frigging kidding me? YANKING on that horse's mouth like that is Cleve Well's answer to teaching a horse to back up? That kind of jerking and yanking will tear a horse's mouth to bits, let alone make completely sure he never quietly takes a bit again! This isn't training with your brain, it's training with your balls (ie: letting testerone do your thinkin' for ya) Good job there Cleve-ie boy, you teach them wanna-be cowboys how to show dem hosses who's boss!

    a--hole.

  • What an idiot this man is! I'd like to put a bit in his mouth and yank it like that a few times. May all cruel horse "trainers" like him take their final rides straight to hell for all the pain that they've caused innocent horses.

  • Thanks for posting these vids and making people aware of how cruel he is! Everybody watch out who you put your horses with.... :-(((

  • I fail to see what the point of this is. At least with a bridle on. I've seen something similar done with a HALTER to get the horse to back, but with a bridle it's just cruel. ... I would only do this if my horse was stepping all over me. Which that horse isn't.

  • what the hell? this guy is a trainer?! i don't think so... that's a good way to get your horse hard mouthed, hurt, and dangerous. this is ridiculous- poor horse didn't do anything! why didn't the guy use body language to back him up?

  • I think someone should bridle up this jerk and spur him until he has pussy sides like Slow Lopin Scotch. Who ever buys into this dude's training techniques must be extremely stupid. Glad I never wasted a dime on any of his videos.

  • Wonder if that's the "technique" he used to break Scotch's jaw?

Blondie, roll over and look him in the eye. He is an abuser, period!!! Anyone who supports his 'training methods" is just as sick.

  • THANK YOU! HE IS CRAZY!

  • OMG WHAT AN ASSHOLE! i want to yank his mouth off like he just did to that poor horse!

    >:(

  • I win countless awards and I have never yanked on my horses mouth. I just use my body languege and I can get them to lower there heads my trainer is totally against useing your hands

  • oh ya? where? open shows don't count.

  • no dumbass I go to rated and schooling dressage shows and local AQHA shows and open idiot

  • Many open show circuits have tough competitors and very experienced and skilled riders. Even more so over the past couple of years, as many breed show exhibitors have left breed shows for the friendlier, less expensive venues.

  • Cleve Wells has been suspended from the AQHA for 1 year and given a $10000 fine. See gohorseshow for details.

  • In MY world, the bit tells the horse how to position his body, and OTHER aids, such as voice, leg, tell the horse to move his feet. And of course in my world a bit is never used as abusively as this. What a mess.

  • xD omg this man is so stupid. "now how did he get that horse to back up so soft?" SOFT? SOFT? WANT ME TO SHOW YOU SOFT?

  • This is fucking wrong. Someone needs to get on top of his ass, and shut him the hell down. I couldn't even watch the whole vid is was so disurbing.

  • Comment removed

  • blonde, he most definitely DID injure this horse with the snaffle. The owner told me that he made the horse's mouth bleed and that the horse had scabs on his lips for a week afterward. I disagree about keeping negative comments to oneself. Mr. Wells has injured horses! The AQHA Professional Horseman's Committee revoked his membership of their group. Google for Slow Lopin Scotch for more info. When we say only nice things, abusers get away with their crap.

  • Oh yeah blonde, yanking on the horses mouth making it head shy is all right. Uhuh. I sure hope you don't do anything like this with your barrel racers. I sure hope you never do. It will ruin your horse and make it afraid of you--and hurt it!

  • Geez, Cleve you ass... how about tapping him on the chest while using gentle pressure on the reins??!! Now one can perhaps see how that horse under his training had chunks shattered off its jaw... *sigh*

  • there is no reason i REPEAT NO REASON for that man to be yanking on that bit. i hope he realizes he can cause some major issues with that horse... if you go to put a bit in that horses mouth hes going to put opn a fight... hes teaching that horse tyo HATE the bit and to go against it .... you should want to make ground work GENTLE and quiet and a little FUN...

  • to get a horse to back up GENTAL PRESSURE should be applied to the horse's mouth. Not yank yank yank

  • OMG!!! Is that a bit or just a halter? That man needs to die painfully!!! Jk... but seriously.

  • Trainers like this are a cancer to the horses (the hapless victims), and to this wonderful profession-- which is largely comprised of ethical and compassionate men and women dedicated to building better understanding and communication between horse and rider.

That being said, I would gladly give Mr. Wells a "lesson" in his own style of 'learnin' .

  • It's a sad fact that remnants of "old school" or just plain unthinking ignorance and brutality is still found in this profession. But that means that we must be VIGILANT in excoriating and ERADICATING it once it's found.

  • *yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank yank*

". . . people say, 'how do you get that horse to back off so soft?' "

    WTF??

    UNBELIEVABLE.

This guy is an EMBARRASSMENT to the Professional Horsemen's Council.

  • This dumbass is an embararssment to horse people everywhere.

Guy needs to get himself a pretty toy pony to show off to all his little buddies around the barn.

Way to make a hard resentful horse without ever getting on....
