Someone just gave me a 40 Stovebolt Six Chevy. Last ran when it was parked 10 years ago. What do I need to do bare minimum to get it cranked? Make sure engine turns over, clean out gas tank, get a 6 volt battery, replace the oil, check for spark at all the spark plugs... and... anything else? Hit it with some ether in the carb until she coughs and sputters to life and I get some suction on the gas line from the carb?
Thats a fine 39 Dodge.......out to treat her with a nice tarp, or better yet......a corner in your barn. Im still restoring my 27 Nash Cabriolet.......and thank God the prior owners kept her inside for the past 50 years. Good luck with that beauty.
had a 55 dodge with a flat head, started every time. you can actually hear the oil feeding back into the parts of the engine as the starter gets faster.
I've had both newer and older cars and trucks. It's possible to get a lot of miles out of either. The older vehicles tend to need frequent maintenance to be at their best. The newer ones less often but usually require special tools and equipment to do proper diagnostics and maintenance. This old Dodge here obviously has a slight coolant leak somewhere, as it's pooling up in the spark plug wells. I have an old Dodge with similar motor. Had the thing for years. Given me good service.
@bluemoondiadochi Id hate to burst your bubble, back then you were lucky to make it to 90k miles. now cars last up to and well over 200k with little preventive maintenance. this trucks engine was probably overhauled or had some work done to it over the years. i'm tired of people saying old cars last longer.
@weston631 didnt know that... oh well, i took measures after our old cars.
grandpa had a citroen that just wouldn't die, over 350.000 kilometers (the engine anyway, the bodywork rusted away...)
old VW Golfs are still rolling the streets, as do 30 year old Yugos
frankly the best quality cars were built 1985-1995. they stopped building them this lasting when it was discovered that the parts just don't go broke, meaning no profit from parts.
@weston631 Im sure what this guy and the others really mean, is that old cars and trucks had barely if any plastic in them depending on vintages, and have survived of course in the millions out west of North AMerica, or shit even CUBA where salt water air and humidity have wreaked havoc on the pre '60 Americans!! Currently writing a certain article about a '57 Merc I photographed in Havana in 07.
Old trucks like this are awesome. And call me crazy, but I think they look better when the paint is a little rougher. They're trucks after all. No need to give em a $10000 paint-job.

back then they built machines TO LAST!
not like today, new cars have a limited lifespan because they were MADE to live short!
anyway, excellent machine, keep it around! if you have a new car, this ol truck will probably outlive it flat!
