  • A great version. I wish Paul would have slowed his version down maybe later in a live show. This is about the time that Emmylou was beginning to lose her upper range. It can get on your nerves but she still gets through beautifully.

  • listening to this great cover, I almost forget what the original sounds like. It almost brings tears to my eyes.

  • There is an angel in music.

  • 17 people are trance fags!

  • @systamatics I love trance music, I also love this song....

  • Beautiful! And the song is good too

  • paul mCcartney gave thumbs up to emmylou"s recording of his song. of course who would'nt approve of emmylou singing their song. I have her in my top 10 best female singers ever.

  • Actually a good Beatle cover. Very nice.

  • @crazytwilightfan11 they are few and far in between I will tell you that. Celebrities ruining beatles songs left and right to make it look like they have good taste. Pop stars and the Across the Universe movie have probably done more damage to The Beatles then Mark David Chapman or Lung Cancer did. I'm not really partial to country, but at least this version manages to be respectful to the original.

  • @ChristIllusion731 You're damn right, man!

  • @ChristIllusion731 Across the Universe was a great movie. Its got great covers of beatles songs

  • @ChristIllusion731 I respectfully disagree. Even mangled covers introduce young listeners to Beatles music that they might otherwise never hear. Some of them will go on to explore the original and come to love and appreciate it as much as any Beatles purist.

  • I usually don't like the Beatles... but if it's Emmylou to sing...,

  • @edgehog76

    You f****** ignorant moron

  • When she starts singin' this, I have trouble keepin'in dry. She really touches my heart.

I'm not too fond of people covering Beatles songs, but this one is soo beautiful.

  • @panlemans "I'm not too fond of people covering Beatles songs, but this one is soo beautiful."

In general, I agree. The original versions are etched so deeply into my mind that anything else seems a sacrilege. But Emmylou's cover of "For No One" is an exception to the rule. In fact, I find that I prefer it to the original. It is so much more soulful and sad. She sang this at the White House in a tribute to Paul and was absolutely wonderful. You can find the whole program at the PBS site.

  • Jerry that was great...wonderful Emmylou

  • she still a beautiful women

  • What an absolutely beautiful version of a great song. Emmylou sings like an angel and the arrangement is superb. Thanks for posting!

  • Now, that is beautiful. We love ya'

  • Definitely the best cover I've heard. Thanks for posting.

  • @BardofCornwall Yes! The best. Because it's The Beatles and her. This version is a true gift.

  • Wow, she can really convey the heartbreak in this song. Well done.

  • Great!

  • such a lovely women, devoted to her music

  • Truly Heartbreaking ...as i wipe the tears

  • Not really like it, i still prefer the original, although it a beatiful version. and why they change the solo? it´s one of the most brillant and beatiful of all time. it´s like playng starway to hevan without it. it´s not the same.

  • ich lieb Emmy's stimme, Sie is so wunderbar! Jenni, 16 from Chicago

  • Classic McCartney tune. Gorgeous rendition.

  • @byan85 ....not to mention Lennon......

  • @rubbersole79 McCartney wrote it.

  • NO! Cilla Black are The best for this song!

  • talk about re-inventing a song and owning it. bravo!

  • waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy too slow

  • Emmylou is such a beautiful, talented woman....WOW!

  • I just found this a while back, and it's now one of my favorite ever Beatles covers. Wow, what an amazing performance.

  • Like Joe Cocker, Emmylou does interpretations, not covers and they are both Beatles fans, like me.

  • She is BEAUTIFUL

  • Beautiful rendition of that Lennon/McCartney song!

  • Some of the best advice you can learn from is this: If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. What a shame it is that an icon like EmmyLou has trash on her page here.

  • The unmatchable, unsurpassable, lovely. Emmylou Harris, Thank you for posting this favorite.

  • Lisa6 is right -- mature men would much rather be with an insightful experienced woman than a young woman without soul (no matter how perfectly beautiful). Think about the metaphor . . .

  • This is about so much more than "voice" -- this is about "heart" and an oh-so-poignant interpretation that comes with maturity -- wait awhile, you'll understand.......

  • Now here's a stunned f*ck that has no concept of voice ... let alone music.

    Waiting is beyond his realm.

  • You have no idea who she is, do you? Check your history books-start with Gram Parsons.

  • THE SONG, AND HOW GORGEOUS IS EMMY!

  • Tender song performed tenderly. Great post.

  • i disagree. the beatles DID NOT have "stiff upper lips". just b/c they're british doesnt mean they cant show emotion in their work. they all blow everyone out of the water. that is why i loved them @ first. they showed such emotion like i have never seen. this is a good cover though.

  • Lennon-McCartney had the right idea, when they wrote the words, and when they wrote the evocotive melody. But I don't think they recognized the intensity of the emotion expressed in their song, which this performance does.

  • I agree. However the stoicism is very much in the vein of their recordings. They almost always maintained that stiff upper lip on most of their performances. They are English :) it is their job :)

But a great tribute to the giants of composition. It gets no bigger. period.

  • disagree.

they're among the top handful of musical artists of the 20th century, they knew what thay had and how to use it.

but maybe what they didn't know was that their music would last forever.

  • Well, oranger, we agree on their status as artists - in fact I have them # 2 to Dylan. My point is that there is poignancy here that is masked by the almost kaleidescopic manner in which the Beatles music accompanies the lyric. Even Paul's "demo version" is kind of bouncy.

  • Hear Emmylou sing Joni Mitchell's Magdalene Laundries,. That's the greatest.

  • I think she does pull off this Beatles cover, and brilliantly. She reminds you what a good song it is, bringing out all the possibilities. Beautiful.

  • Such a beautiful woman and such a painfully beautiful song...

  • The perfect song, the perfect setting. How much would I give to have a jam at one of Ally's Shetland Sessions, just once before I peg it!

Oh, and I'd like to marry Emmy Lou too, please. :o)

  • This just has to be one of the most beautiful recordings of "For No One" by anyone covering that song. I am glad I get to hear it! Love that Emmylou!

(Not listening to all the other stupid people on here.) Bah!

  • Great to see Scotland's greatest fiddle player Ally Bain playing on this

  • You are a moron

  • Gave me goose bumps, played & sang so delicately.

  • One of the most beautiful voices to ever grace this planet (IMO).

  • @dusty5strings you're kidding, right? It's all gravelly and gummed up with cigarette smoke.....my grandma sings better than this

  • @nubrubber WOW - can I meet your Grandma??

  • this is a very beautiful version of one of my favorite Beatle songs... thanks for posting!

  • tastefully done, but I prefer the original.

  • how many artists have covered The Beatles?

this one ranks as one of the best.

not a big suprise, since miss harris is an artist herself.

  • Talent recognises talent.

  • I like elvis with Yesterday (also Hey Jude but not as much)

  • I just cant get enough !

  • aches

  • A thing of beauty is a joy forever

  • Sometimes I think I'm in love with this voice.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I wish I had found this utter stew pidd ity

when you first wrote it so that I could have told you then how ignorant you are.

(But you can't read this because it uses the future perfect tense and they didn't get to that before you dropped out of school after first grade (at age 26.))

  • teflonballs uses the term 'first grade' so i'm guessing they are american. miszoo, on the other hand, makes reference to 'hugh laurie' and 'turd' which alludes to them being british.

the thought of a yank correcting a briton's grammar amuses me greatly. because you see, you 'turd', it's not the future perfect tense but a second conditional.

alas, i take no comfort from my arrogance :(

  • Poophead.

    What country is that from?

  • Wow...just wow...That voice is one of the finest instruments in music today. And at age 61, She is still astonishingly beautiful.

    Peace,

    Toby

  • P.S.- Isn't it amazing how someone can write a song and not realize at that moment in time just how powerful the song is, especially when performed by others, such like this. Another is "Without You", written by Bad Finger and sung by the likes of just about everyone but best by Harry Nillson, Mariah Carey and my favorite Air Supply...Some people have a gift that is magical!! Thx Paul and again, Thx Emmy for takiing this as your own :) hugs, Jenni

  • It was Emmy that turned me on to country when i was so into rock and pop music and then i heard her...she is so beautiful and i dont think i have EVER seen a women grow older with such grace and beauty and voice as Emmy...I LOVE YOU (in case u come here) Emmy!!! Luv and Hugs, Jenni

  • I could listen to you a whole week!! Beautiful

  • I'm both a Beatles' and a country music's addict and I'm speechless. Unbelievable. You rock, girl!

  • I could listen all day to this, beautifull

  • Wow! The combination of a Lennon-McCartney tune, and country's music's most soulful woman! Beautiful! Brilliant performance! *****

  • Brilliant..Thanks a lot !!

  • Just awesome , Wow.....

  • Emmylou's original recording of this is to me one of the most beautiful recordings by anyone ever. Such saddness as conveyed in these lyrics could be interpreted by none other as well as Emmylou with her aching voice. She's such a treasure.

  • 'aching voice'...someone must've broke her heart at one time, 'n she dressed it on this song...

  • bellissima versione!

  • this makes me tear up every single time

  • é uma excelente versão, sim sr, mas ela tem umas falhas na voz de vez em quando que estragam um bocado. Se deixassem os instrumentos e mudassem de cantora não se perdia nada.. é a minha opinião

  • This is so beautiful it hurts.

  • this is why the beatles are so influential, thanks to them i've now discovered the magic of emmylou harris, gram parsons and THEIR circle of musicians.

  • In '74 I bought EmLH's first solo lp used.I love all her music so much since she was with Gram Parsons. This version is so depressing (if you are on the downside of a 33 year old marriage gone) that I'll just skip it.

  • I love this number - very good

  • "i'm a die-hard beatles fan. both versions are amazing.

even the beatles paid tribute to musicians that came before THEM."

  • the Beatle version is 100% better than this.

  • i'm a die-hard beatles fan. both versions are amazing.

even the beatles paid tribute to musicians that came before THEM.

  • pacogama said - the Beatle version is 100% better than this.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    That's like apples and bananas.

I'm the original monster Beatle fan. On my street in 1965 if you liked the Beatles the Rolling Stones fans would kick the shit out of ya.

I still like ELH's version here very much.

Part of the magic that will set the Beatles and George Martin apart for all time is that their music was soooooooooo good that's it's timeless.

  • just the BEST...............

  • Great tribute to Sir Paul McCartney

  • I can't stand most of today's country, but classic country that includes absolute musical INSTITUTIONS like Emmylou Harris is a different story. In addition, the Beatles are my favorite band, this is my favorite of their songs, and BOY, does she sing it beautifully. There's no voice quite like Emmylou Harris'. Thanks for posting it!

  • fan des Beatles, sequence découverte, SUPER !!!!!!

  • The Beatles done in Country - fabulous! And it works too . . . .

  • I used to skip class to watch this!:)

I've spent the last 12 years or so going on about this amazing show in Scotland with Emmylou Harris & now I've found it on YouTube:) Now I make musical instruments for musicians in Airshire and the Isle Of Sky in Scotland:) Its a funny old world:)

  • Her voice is fantastic--and she´s so beautiful!

  • Emmylou is one of the few singers that can bring me to tears. There is a touch of sadness in her that always comes through. I love her.

  • Emmylou can turn a good song into a timeless classic...her version tears me up inside everytime....heartbreaking beauty !!!

  • Excellent version!. What a surprise.

  • Ooh I'm all goose-pimples!

  • damn emmylou, you're breaking my heart

  • God, isn't youtube wonderful!

  • Simply splendid.

  • a true classic, listening to this makes me feel like im home again.

  • heartbreaking but incredible. anyone know where i can get this recording of transatlantic sessions. I only know the song was first recorded on pieces of the sky

  • it makes me weep...the beatles never had the same effect...i's ELH's version

  • Superb interpretation, and a great mix of baroque elements with Harris' traditional presentation. The accompanists are, obviously, great too.

  • c64c64c64, that's troublecleff. He is THE MAN! I recorded vocals over his take on penny lane.

    youtubedotcom/watch?v=fU0w_6NLgcU

  • Great performance of a great song

I wish they would release/repeat the Transatlantic sessions so much good stuff

  • Jay Ungar is on fiddle, a wonderful musician in his own right who composed and played for Ken Burns "Civil War" PBS series. His wife, Molly Mason is on bass. It's beautiful!

  • She is an interpreter. To me, most of the songs she has covered are more beautiful than the orginal ones. It is just my opinion. She is one of the greatest interpreters that this world has ever known. Another one i can think of now is the late Elis Regina of Brazil.

  • For No One is one of the most crushingly poignant songs ever written. And this version more than does the original justice, right down to the low whistle substituting for the French horn. Emmylou sounds fantastic too - brilliant.

  • I like this better than Paul McCartney's original version.

  • Yes She does it justice all right , but don't ever forget who brought the song into existence , the genius that was Paul >>

  • Me too.... and it's better at this tempo because it's such a sad song.

  • So do I!

  • Stuuning. The song kept lingering in my head. No one could have done it better.

  • Beauty itself

    Thanks for sharing

  • Very, very nice. Just LOVE it!

    Thank you.

  • Lovely and amazing - thank you for posting this!

  • Thanks so much for these posts.

  • Great!

  • Just excellent!!!

  • Who's the piper? It's not Davey Spillane...

  • Yes it is...

  • Ally - That's Jerry Douglas.

  • My God! That was incredible. Thank you!

    Mitch

  • Emmylou puts her heart into her music. Thanks for posting this

  • legendary.

  • Chamber/parlour music at its finest. Excellent.

  • That's too much BEAUTIFUL nothing to add !

    THANK YOU.

  • This was a great series, I noticed a young Dave Rawlings on lap slide guitar. Video and sound fantasic, thanks for posting.Ally

  • That's Jerry Douglas ... not Dave Rawlings on Dobro.

And he steals the show .. ;O)
