why do we get embalmed anyway?

@ledzeplad This embalming is done to preserve the body so that it can be used for teaching purposes. Most medical students and some of paramedics should dissect human bodies during their course studies. In some parts of the world, people donate their bodies for teaching purposes. In other places, where body donation is not a norm, medical colleges seek to collect bodies of people who are friendless and add them to their reserve of bodies. Embalming prevents decomposition of tissues.

@ledzeplad Speaking in general, most cultures/religions are dependant on the preservation (embalming) of the body so it will not decompose as rapidly as it naturally should. The purpose of this is to keep the body presentable for the family to have a service for the loved one, this will provide closure. All in all, embalming temporarily preserves the body for the family to see them for sereval days.
