  • The film had the whole vibe of the Australian outback, Europeans in a savage foreign land (the land not the aboriginals) way out of their depth

It felt dirty, it felt hot, it felt desperate

  • Probably the best Australian film ever. Even better than Ned Kelly.

  • An intense film. The soundtrack throughout the film was amazing as was the whispering haunting poetry. All the actors were brilliant. It was unbearable to watch and listen to the whipping scene. Richard Wilson (Mikey) was amazing during that scene. You could feel his bloody pain. Jesus, I was exhausted after that scene. And I was rooting for the Aboriginals.

  • This is probably the best western in the past 15 years.

  • Red Dead Redemption

  • This is my favorite first date movie.

  • This film never fails to get me in the festive spirit.

  • Love this movie. Great characters and atmosphere. Love the scenes with aborigines.

  • Eventually !!! i find the movie's name !!.i have been searching this movie because i really liked it in the past but i forgot its name , i just remembered the wind hiding the behind of the sun quote. maybe you wont believe me but i am strugling to remember it for 2 years ! guess what Movie is better then i remember

  • meh...the movie is at best medicore

  • I love westerns my Dad got me hooked on them as a kid, they don't pump out as many as they used to anymore. I just recently saw this movie excellent film ! ! I really enjoyed it very deep and detailed character introductions and growth.

  • I love the whispering part from 1:52 - 2:00 - especially the gentle changeover of the linked T-words like "....To The sTars of The sky......." To my mind it sounds calming and it moves me into a kind of trance. Maybe you know that feeling, too!

  • Too Violent for me, I prefur a good old Western like Once upon a time in the west :D

  • Rock musicians should make movies more often. Please update that url, it brings you to something completely different than the movie itself.

  • Comment removed

  • Next to "The Wild Bunch" and "Django", "The Proposition" is one of the most violent Westerns I've ever seen. Not that that's a bad thing, though

  • What a terrible trailer for such a brilliant film.

  • Bloody brilliant film. Dirty, violent and yet strangely hypnotic, emotinal and tragic. More films should be like this! x

  • This trailer sucks, it makes me not want to see this amazing western.

  • @MatthewGz It's technically an extreme southeastern.

  • @joethetimelord

    whatever.

  • This is a pretty bad trailer for a very good movie.

  • what song is playing at 0:50?

  • @nomarcp5 It's Martha's Dream by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. You can find it on YouTube, but more importantly, on the soundtrack CD for the film. By far one of my favourite songs in the film.

  • For people bitching about how violent the movie is, I just have one word for you: ITS THE WILD WEST, BITCHES!

  • @IprototypeI Eehrm...No it's not, It's Down Under (Australia) not The Wild West...(Slightly diffrent continent mate ;-) )

  • @IprototypeI thats also 4 words

  • @IprototypeI it's Australia, not the Wild West...

  • @ThatSilasKid it's the wild west OF Australia

  • @IprototypeI i just say they should bloody grow a pair

  • @IprototypeI Technically it's the wild south. :P

  • @IprototypeI The AUSTRALIAN wild west ;) x

  • @IprototypeI That's more than one word.

  • @IprototypeI

    It's the outback.

  • @Prototyped its the outback

  • @IprototypeI thats 5 words, retard.

  • @IprototypeI and its not the wild west.

  • @IprototypeI wild east*

  • Incredibly gruesome film. Wow, just wow. Epic and amazing. I cannot believe I never heard anyone speak of this film before. Now I cannot stop raving about it. One of the best films I've ever seen. Possibly thee best.

  • Everything in this movie was made with a great balance, main ost soundtrack, all the heroes, poetic violence, not ordinary "watch and laugh" violence, but POETIC violence, all the scenes, climat so fucking breath taking..but i didn't liked the main charachter -" Richard Wilson's" interpretated Mike Burn's,very boring! :)

  • Why is it that to me this looks like an amazingly dull boring western like movie while all of you praise it to hell?? Now i HAVE to force myself to watch the movie while i don't want to... Against all nature.

  • @adofilmpjes i really like the road too, filmed by the same director. They are both set in bleak,

decaying worlds, where people are clinging on to shreds of humanity amidst the purveying brutality.

  • Off all the characters in the movie, the best of them is Stanley caught between what is right with personal moral obligation, well acted, written and directed character. I don't think any other actor could have played it like Mr Winston did.

  • fuking love this movie!!

  • I had to watch this film for my film class. I wasn't too keen on watching it as the idea of a 'western movie' bored the shit out of me.

This movie is now one of the best, if not, the best movie I have seen. It's beyond fantastic.

I need to now compare and contrast it to another western movie and I was thinking 3:10 to Yuma? Who has seen both and thinks they're both good examples?

  • Of the westerns I've seen, this is my favorite. It's so dark and gritty.

  • the irish bhoys rule this film

  • One of the most impressive western from this last years!!

  • Not a Western ... it is an Australian Colonial ... saw it on the big screen the day it opened in NSW. One of my fave movies of all time.

  • i have to disagree i thought this movie was pretty naff... 3.10 to yuma is a good movie

  • great film; dirty as hell but beautiful in its honesty

  • Well its a good Eastern haha...

  • @darfdusty Geographically n Theme-wise traveling West from London into Texas n way past the cities of California into the Pacific and washing up into Australia it remains the West... The BEST n Grittiest Western in DECADES!!

  • over rated

  • the hatred in this movie.......

  • I hear Captain Price! :D

  • @mightyjoelaith Ha ha, nice one.

"Suppose I gave you a horse and a gun, Soap." Man, I hope Modern Warfare 3 has that line.

  • @TheScatsbury and i hope there is no modern warfare 3

  • @infurthekill

    amen

  • I asked someone if they'd seen this one time, they responded 'Yeah, I love Sandra Bullock'. I facepalmed so hard it knocked my teeth out the back of my head.

  • @UncleMcCrustyPoo more like face nuke

  • It's funny because australia is technically an eastern country

  • "godforsaken" - excellent description of Australia.

    Regards,

    New Zealand

  • @9ranty

    bahhhhhhhhhhhhh?

  • i loved the straight to the point not much talking mentality of the movie

and the music completed te movie perfectly

  • dudes Nick Cave wrote this story!!!

  • @Alos21 IKR! Reason to watch it if there's no other.

  • The older brother in this reminds me of Toecutter from Mad Max.

  • Haven't seen this, but if it's anywhere near the level of "3:10 to Yuma", "Appaloosa", "unforgiven". Should be a good movie

  • @scarrillo31

It's better than all 3 of those.

IMO Unforgiven is the most overrated western out there.

It's definetly a very good film, but it's not the masterpiece everybody thinks it is.

  • @scarrillo31 Pat Garrett and Billy the kid, The Wild Bunch, piss on the 3 films you mentioned! Have you seen many westerns?

  • This isn't a western ... it's what we Aussies would call a Colonial - days of the first settlers - Bushrangers et al. I took a Canadian friend to see this on the big screen when it first came out ... it took him some time to recover. *L*

  • this movie was so awesome, its also very similar to the game red dead redemption.

  • I've heard this movie is flat out fucked up. Like they show someone murdering an entire family, including a pregnant woman.

  • HATED this movie with a passion.

  • @my89tube fair enough, why?

  • @TomBlfc8 Maybe its cause I had really high expectations and I enjoy alot of the actors in this film(Guy Pearce especially), but this movie just felt soooooo drawn out.

    *SPOILER*

It was rather annoying how Guy Pearce decides to kill his brother in the end anyways when he could have done that an hour ago in the movie.

    *END SPOILER*

I guess that was the idea of the movie though. Deciding whether or not to go through with it.

  • @my89tube everyone has there own opinion i suppose, i havnt seen this yet but im going to soon today i think and afterwards ill give you mine... whats your fav western though ?

  • This is not only the greatest western ever made, it is one of the greatest films of all time. Great script, great direction, and phenomenal acting. (Danny Houston and Guy Pearce at their finest) This violent fable will haunt you for the rest of your life, but that is the beauty of the terrific film.

  • terrific movie

also the flyiest movie ever made

  • @kurumais flyiest???

  • @TARBABY71 the most flies in an motion picture ever

  • @kurumais Yeah, there is ton of flies in this movie, especially in the flogging scene.

  • It's a good story, but the movie seemed very slow moving to me.

  • Forget the Australia Film.. This is the Greatest Aussie Film!!!

  • @fazehead Nic Roeg"s Walkabout is better!

  • @dan32113 Walkabout was a British Production a good Film with an English Schoolgirl but not an Aussie Film about the real Australia like the the Proposition.

  • bárbaro

  • red dead...redemption? kinda...

  • This movie was epic!

  • Peliculón!, danny huston es un grosso

  • The best movie in the world. But it will grip you for the rest of your life. Well, you've been warned.

  • Bloody hell, I only typed in The Proposition trailer as it was coming on film four tonight and I never heard of it, but as soon as I saw all your comments before watching the trailer I got the impression that this must be a very good film, so in that case Ill watch it.

  • Great movie great actors

  • Never will you find a film that better integrates the dialog and music! And the character development is complex and without archetypes. The good guys are bad and the bad guys good.

  • Damn, this is a FILM! The characters, the music, the visuals. Beautifully poetic and harshly violent. Easily ranks in my top ten films of all time.

  • Not only one of the best westerns ever, but one of the best movies of all time...well, in my opinion

  • To me this film has aspects of Conrad's Heart of Darkness when dealing with early Australian settlement. "And this also... has been one of the dark places of the earth." Cpt Stanley's attempt to civilise the wild and the effect the latter has on man. Charlie's journey to find the illusive, mysterious Arthur in "a godforsaken place". The supposed civil's cruelty. Australian cinema is extremely underrated and powerful. Also any film that Nick Cave and Warren Ellis do the soundtrack for is great.

  • New England accents in a western?

  • because they are ausy

  • @MillaHead Well... yea. England were the first settlers in Australia (After the aboriginals of course :/) Then Irish, Scottish and all that came in. I'm Australian, with like English/Irish/Scottish/Dutch ancestry.

  • my 2 new fav moveis this and jesse james realism at its best and im a burns and we got a nasty history. soon said tha wind that follod em home . rider till i die nick cave warren ellis nice work!!!

  • @1122DM1 i luv the assassintaion 2 .this and the proposition r 2 of the best movies ever made!!!

  • Love this film! Love the soundtrack! Film making of the highest order!

  • This top rate, film made an impact on me. I've watched it 3 times now. The actors are so charismatic. The dirty, sweaty attire of the people, all make this into an engaging, gritty, moving film.

  • This is one of the greatest westerns I've ever seen. It's even better than Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven." It is absolutely incredible.

  • Lame

  • please watch it and if you already have watch it again its one of the most powerful movies ive ever seen and one of the best

  • Ok, just wanted to say this movie is one of the best westerns I have ever seen. All around Kick a- - ! fick.

I saw it a few yeas ago and couldn't remember the name.

The movie is so good I searched forever to find it to watch again.

No matter how bad the trailers are it is well worth watching.

That being said from a fairly rugged country boy. I give it an 11+ of 10 score !!

  • "Foreign" - adj. - of, from, in, or characteristic of a country or language other than one's own.

    Dumbass.

  • @bentzenko wait americans are typically gay? what are you european?

  • lol i dont know i was drunk :D

  • the flim is fuckin great it would be nick cave wrote it

  • That's a great movie right there

  • This film is absolutely brilliant.....Plain. And. Simple.

  • yeah this trailers horrible the austuralian one is way better

  • this film is fucking fantastic.

  • This film is amazing. It is the BEST western since Clint Eastwood's, "Unforgiven." Yes, it is violent, but what resonates more are the characters and their relationships, especially between Danny Huston and Guy Pearce. Awesome film. 10/10

  • @CitizenKANE2277 and its australian which is even better.....

  • @CitizenKANE2277 nicely sed friend, and u anit half right its just a great film

  • @CitizenKANE2277 Can it still be classified as a Western?

  • @CitizenKANE2277 Not really a "western", since it's set on Australia xD

  • @SloeElvis

no, but it uses western movie iconography.

  • @CitizenKANE2277

People keep thinking Unforgiven was good.

Keep yur opinions to yourself mister!

  • I heard that this film was good. I liked Pearce in Memento, so I will probably like it.

  • This movie was amazing. Just everything about it left me in awe.

  • Extremely underrated film. A beautiful classic. Hope The Road is as good but the trailer makes it seem like it's going to suck.

  • The trailer sucks but the reviews are extremely positive!!

  • I agree, the trailer is very misleading, probably the music... but the movie is great.

  • yeah the music of the film is much better, they shouldve used that in this trialer

  • I read a really encouraging article in Esquire that says basically the trailer is Weinstein's hand at work, but the film is unrelenting and just what it should be.

  • One of the best things about this film is that the land is depicted almost as one of the characters in the film. The desire to tame the landscape - with colonization or crime - is futile. It's an important subtext to the film. This film couldn't have been made anywhere other than Australia. It's one of the few 'industrialised' nations where the bulk of the physical land is untameable. This land moulds it's immigrants just as much as it did its original inhabitants.

  • I wish Hilcoat had explored that idea more. The characters in the film were all trying to establish order for there respected selfs, but they were doing it in such a horrid place where order was not attainable. A land of death and they dying -- civilization was not possible.

  • This movie is utterly perfect... Words can't describe how great it is...

  • More of a south-eastern, really.

  • Almost definitely the best western of the 21st century so far

  • I definetly call it a Southern

  • i have a question does nick cave appers in the movie? and if so in what scene because i heard he does apper but i ve missed him

  • he does appear in jesse james but not in this one

  • yes in jesse i know he sings the song at the end of the movie.

too bad he isnt in this one.

  • just watched this...great!

  • I just can't get over how stunning this movie is. The cinematogrpahy, the music, the acting, the story... it's just pitch-perfect in every way.

I like it how this movie doesn't have a solid hero, nor a solid villain. Every character is good, bad, and ugly in their own right, and it's up to the viewer to decide who to side with. Personally, I kind of despised and kind of understood them all. I love the complexity of the cast of characters.

  • Spot on description.

Watching this film is like witnessing the end of civilization, and I think that was its purpose!

  • I can always appreciate a good, well done trailer (let alone a fine film).

This movie is fantastic, and has an amazing trailer. Huston and Winstone are outstanding.

  • If you are a film buff and appreciate good art, it doesnt get much better than this for tremendous acting and a strong script. Danny Huston is engrossing, steals almost every scene, he is one of the most underrated actor/directors in film today. Guy Pierce, as always, is enthralling. Watch this, you wont be disappointed.

  • This has to be one of the grittiest westerns I've seen in years..The brutality is so realistic and the teeth of the ppl are so gross that it reminds ppl how awful the west was..Its almost a Bio..Lol..Guy Pierce..John Hurt is outstanding!!

  • The movie is about bad people nobody is good in this movie. Arthur does horriable and awful things because he can. He is also a sociopathic nut job as well but he cares for his family. Charlie is also a messed up guy he's done awful things to people. And there people who are trying to controle all the madness turn out not to be to good themselves. So the movie askes a question can a very good guy be a very bad guy by thinking what he's doing is right. Watchmen askes the same question.

  • To compare the 2 is nonsense.

    Very different films.

They have so little in common.

  • i just saw this movie for the first time last night on IFC....this movie is amazing, hard to follow at times for me but still it was hella good

  • THis flick was awesome.

The reason it's not popular is that's not a stupd brainless piece of shit.

  • Great Australian film.

  • The film was absolutely brilliant. If a filmmaker is going to tell a story involving horrible people, he'd better tell the truth about their nature, otherwise what's the point? Movies aren't always cotton candy entertainment. Sometimes they have something to say about our darker nature. Even then, though, it's also about love, and just how precious it is, and how it must be protected. It's about many things, really.

  • agreed

  • does it have action?

  • why do so many people care more about action than the plot? it's irritating!

  • This film was soooooo good! I can't believe it isn't popular! I don't thik word got around about it.

  • Excellent film, looking forward to seeing his work with "The Road".

  • Darn, now I'm not sure if Martha was pregnant. I watched the movie with the commentary and they didn't mention it so it was something Martha was "wishing" because Stanley has hard time with those things.

  • i thought this was really well done

  • Did anyone get the ending and Martha's dream? What I got from the ending was that she almost ended up like Eliza Hopkins because Martha was pregnant and she almost got raped and killed.

  • I just learned how to play the piano part. I might post the video as a little tribute but I won't show me playing it because the keys are a "secret" and if I give it away it wouldn't be much of a tribute.

  • I know there's a raping scene in this film. three questions:

Is the raping long and cruel?

Is the movie very, very violent?

    Is it good?

For what I've seen, it looks wonderful. But please, answer these questions!!

  • They don't show the raping part. They make you know it's happening but nothing terribly bad, the movie isn't THAT violent but it has it's parts where it makes you think: "WOW" and it's a great movie. I think it's worth watching.

  • If you can understand and relate to how the characters would feel in all the scenes (especially the final scene) then yes, I reckon you would find it really compelling. The great thing is that Nick Cave the director has the history of this time exact.

  • The acting, directing, cinematography of this film is beyond amazing and i cannot believe there isn't a single nomination of any oscar award at all.

  • Il cinema è questo. Dovrebbero essere sempre così i film prodotti...

  • the Australian Trailer is far better...

American Trailers are all the same, they edit them as if they don't know how to not show every little bit of the film.

    AMERICAN TRAILERS SPOIL FILM!

  • Its funny how they like to think its THEIR work. Check out Rec, then Quarrenteen and you'll see.
