An intense film. The soundtrack throughout the film was amazing as was the whispering haunting poetry. All the actors were brilliant. It was unbearable to watch and listen to the whipping scene. Richard Wilson (Mikey) was amazing during that scene. You could feel his bloody pain. Jesus, I was exhausted after that scene. And I was rooting for the Aboriginals.
Eventually !!! i find the movie's name !!.i have been searching this movie because i really liked it in the past but i forgot its name , i just remembered the wind hiding the behind of the sun quote. maybe you wont believe me but i am strugling to remember it for 2 years ! guess what Movie is better then i remember
I love westerns my Dad got me hooked on them as a kid, they don't pump out as many as they used to anymore. I just recently saw this movie excellent film ! ! I really enjoyed it very deep and detailed character introductions and growth.
I love the whispering part from 1:52 - 2:00 - especially the gentle changeover of the linked T-words like "....To The sTars of The sky......." To my mind it sounds calming and it moves me into a kind of trance. Maybe you know that feeling, too!
@nomarcp5 It's Martha's Dream by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. You can find it on YouTube, but more importantly, on the soundtrack CD for the film. By far one of my favourite songs in the film.
Incredibly gruesome film. Wow, just wow. Epic and amazing. I cannot believe I never heard anyone speak of this film before. Now I cannot stop raving about it. One of the best films I've ever seen. Possibly thee best.
Everything in this movie was made with a great balance, main ost soundtrack, all the heroes, poetic violence, not ordinary "watch and laugh" violence, but POETIC violence, all the scenes, climat so fucking breath taking..but i didn't liked the main charachter -" Richard Wilson's" interpretated Mike Burn's,very boring! :)
Why is it that to me this looks like an amazingly dull boring western like movie while all of you praise it to hell?? Now i HAVE to force myself to watch the movie while i don't want to... Against all nature.
Off all the characters in the movie, the best of them is Stanley caught between what is right with personal moral obligation, well acted, written and directed character. I don't think any other actor could have played it like Mr Winston did.
I had to watch this film for my film class. I wasn't too keen on watching it as the idea of a 'western movie' bored the shit out of me.
This movie is now one of the best, if not, the best movie I have seen. It's beyond fantastic.
I need to now compare and contrast it to another western movie and I was thinking 3:10 to Yuma? Who has seen both and thinks they're both good examples?
@darfdusty Geographically n Theme-wise traveling West from London into Texas n way past the cities of California into the Pacific and washing up into Australia it remains the West... The BEST n Grittiest Western in DECADES!!
I asked someone if they'd seen this one time, they responded 'Yeah, I love Sandra Bullock'. I facepalmed so hard it knocked my teeth out the back of my head.
This isn't a western ... it's what we Aussies would call a Colonial - days of the first settlers - Bushrangers et al. I took a Canadian friend to see this on the big screen when it first came out ... it took him some time to recover. *L*
@TomBlfc8 Maybe its cause I had really high expectations and I enjoy alot of the actors in this film(Guy Pearce especially), but this movie just felt soooooo drawn out.
*SPOILER*
It was rather annoying how Guy Pearce decides to kill his brother in the end anyways when he could have done that an hour ago in the movie.
*END SPOILER*
I guess that was the idea of the movie though. Deciding whether or not to go through with it.
@my89tube everyone has there own opinion i suppose, i havnt seen this yet but im going to soon today i think and afterwards ill give you mine... whats your fav western though ?
This is not only the greatest western ever made, it is one of the greatest films of all time. Great script, great direction, and phenomenal acting. (Danny Houston and Guy Pearce at their finest) This violent fable will haunt you for the rest of your life, but that is the beauty of the terrific film.
@dan32113 Walkabout was a British Production a good Film with an English Schoolgirl but not an Aussie Film about the real Australia like the the Proposition.
Bloody hell, I only typed in The Proposition trailer as it was coming on film four tonight and I never heard of it, but as soon as I saw all your comments before watching the trailer I got the impression that this must be a very good film, so in that case Ill watch it.
Never will you find a film that better integrates the dialog and music! And the character development is complex and without archetypes. The good guys are bad and the bad guys good.
To me this film has aspects of Conrad's Heart of Darkness when dealing with early Australian settlement. "And this also... has been one of the dark places of the earth." Cpt Stanley's attempt to civilise the wild and the effect the latter has on man. Charlie's journey to find the illusive, mysterious Arthur in "a godforsaken place". The supposed civil's cruelty. Australian cinema is extremely underrated and powerful. Also any film that Nick Cave and Warren Ellis do the soundtrack for is great.
@MillaHead Well... yea. England were the first settlers in Australia (After the aboriginals of course :/) Then Irish, Scottish and all that came in. I'm Australian, with like English/Irish/Scottish/Dutch ancestry.
my 2 new fav moveis this and jesse james realism at its best and im a burns and we got a nasty history. soon said tha wind that follod em home . rider till i die nick cave warren ellis nice work!!!
This top rate, film made an impact on me. I've watched it 3 times now. The actors are so charismatic. The dirty, sweaty attire of the people, all make this into an engaging, gritty, moving film.
This film is amazing. It is the BEST western since Clint Eastwood's, "Unforgiven." Yes, it is violent, but what resonates more are the characters and their relationships, especially between Danny Huston and Guy Pearce. Awesome film. 10/10
I read a really encouraging article in Esquire that says basically the trailer is Weinstein's hand at work, but the film is unrelenting and just what it should be.
One of the best things about this film is that the land is depicted almost as one of the characters in the film. The desire to tame the landscape - with colonization or crime - is futile. It's an important subtext to the film. This film couldn't have been made anywhere other than Australia. It's one of the few 'industrialised' nations where the bulk of the physical land is untameable. This land moulds it's immigrants just as much as it did its original inhabitants.
I wish Hilcoat had explored that idea more. The characters in the film were all trying to establish order for there respected selfs, but they were doing it in such a horrid place where order was not attainable. A land of death and they dying -- civilization was not possible.
I just can't get over how stunning this movie is. The cinematogrpahy, the music, the acting, the story... it's just pitch-perfect in every way.
I like it how this movie doesn't have a solid hero, nor a solid villain. Every character is good, bad, and ugly in their own right, and it's up to the viewer to decide who to side with. Personally, I kind of despised and kind of understood them all. I love the complexity of the cast of characters.
If you are a film buff and appreciate good art, it doesnt get much better than this for tremendous acting and a strong script. Danny Huston is engrossing, steals almost every scene, he is one of the most underrated actor/directors in film today. Guy Pierce, as always, is enthralling. Watch this, you wont be disappointed.
This has to be one of the grittiest westerns I've seen in years..The brutality is so realistic and the teeth of the ppl are so gross that it reminds ppl how awful the west was..Its almost a Bio..Lol..Guy Pierce..John Hurt is outstanding!!
The movie is about bad people nobody is good in this movie. Arthur does horriable and awful things because he can. He is also a sociopathic nut job as well but he cares for his family. Charlie is also a messed up guy he's done awful things to people. And there people who are trying to controle all the madness turn out not to be to good themselves. So the movie askes a question can a very good guy be a very bad guy by thinking what he's doing is right. Watchmen askes the same question.
The film was absolutely brilliant. If a filmmaker is going to tell a story involving horrible people, he'd better tell the truth about their nature, otherwise what's the point? Movies aren't always cotton candy entertainment. Sometimes they have something to say about our darker nature. Even then, though, it's also about love, and just how precious it is, and how it must be protected. It's about many things, really.
Darn, now I'm not sure if Martha was pregnant. I watched the movie with the commentary and they didn't mention it so it was something Martha was "wishing" because Stanley has hard time with those things.
Did anyone get the ending and Martha's dream? What I got from the ending was that she almost ended up like Eliza Hopkins because Martha was pregnant and she almost got raped and killed.
I just learned how to play the piano part. I might post the video as a little tribute but I won't show me playing it because the keys are a "secret" and if I give it away it wouldn't be much of a tribute.
They don't show the raping part. They make you know it's happening but nothing terribly bad, the movie isn't THAT violent but it has it's parts where it makes you think: "WOW" and it's a great movie. I think it's worth watching.
If you can understand and relate to how the characters would feel in all the scenes (especially the final scene) then yes, I reckon you would find it really compelling. The great thing is that Nick Cave the director has the history of this time exact.
The film had the whole vibe of the Australian outback, Europeans in a savage foreign land (the land not the aboriginals) way out of their depth
It felt dirty, it felt hot, it felt desperate

I just can't get over how stunning this movie is. The cinematogrpahy, the music, the acting, the story... it's just pitch-perfect in every way.
I like it how this movie doesn't have a solid hero, nor a solid villain. Every character is good, bad, and ugly in their own right, and it's up to the viewer to decide who to side with. Personally, I kind of despised and kind of understood them all. I love the complexity of the cast of characters.

Spot on description.
Watching this film is like witnessing the end of civilization, and I think that was its purpose!

I can always appreciate a good, well done trailer (let alone a fine film).
This movie is fantastic, and has an amazing trailer. Huston and Winstone are outstanding.

To compare the 2 is nonsense.
Very different films.
They have so little in common.

I watched the movie with the commentary and they didn't mention it so it was something Martha was "wishing" because Stanley has hard time with those things.

i thought this was really well done

Did anyone get the ending and Martha's dream? What I got from the ending was that she almost ended up like Eliza Hopkins because Martha was pregnant and she almost got raped and killed.

I just learned how to play the piano part. I might post the video as a little tribute but I won't show me playing it because the keys are a "secret" and if I give it away it wouldn't be much of a tribute.

I know there's a raping scene in this film. three questions:
Is the raping long and cruel?
Is the movie very, very violent?
Is it good?
For what I've seen, it looks wonderful. But please, answer these questions!!
burtondylan100fan 3 years ago
They don't show the raping part. They make you know it's happening but nothing terribly bad, the movie isn't THAT violent but it has it's parts where it makes you think: "WOW" and it's a great movie. I think it's worth watching.

If you can understand and relate to how the characters would feel in all the scenes (especially the final scene) then yes, I reckon you would find it really compelling. The great thing is that Nick Cave the director has the history of this time exact.

The acting, directing, cinematography of this film is beyond amazing and i cannot believe there isn't a single nomination of any oscar award at all.

Il cinema è questo. Dovrebbero essere sempre così i film prodotti...

the Australian Trailer is far better...
American Trailers are all the same, they edit them as if they don't know how to not show every little bit of the film.
AMERICAN TRAILERS SPOIL FILM!

Its funny how they like to think its THEIR work. Check out Rec, then Quarrenteen and you'll see.
