  • so not true! you forgot the wind! backward warp zones! the very agressive hammer brothers that charge at you! the tree chompers that don't stay down if your beside the pipe! the bouncy board that makes you fly! the fact that its very possible to jump the flag pole! the the octopus that you can kill above water! Lugie jumps higher-as horrible traction-mario has better traction but doesnt jump high! and they introuduced jumping on the koopas to get higher! so many differences!

  • I played this game on the Super Mario All-Stars cartridge for SNES. This game is RIDICULOUSLY hard, but that's what makes it fun. To beat castle D-4 took me literally thousands of lives, and several months of dedicated play. This is the best SMB game.

  • I have Super mario allstars for my SNES. And i have played both the original super mario bros and super mario bros the lost levels. And sometimes super mario bros the lost level is easier. Why? If get a GAME OVER you start of on the level you died. Not it the beginning of the world as in super mario bros

  • Well us here in the UK also managed to get it included on the SNES game "Super mairo all stars".

    Honestly, the game was far too hard, the puzzles where unfair, the game relied too much on pixel perfect jumping, there's no innovation whatsoever in the gameplay (exactly the same as SMB1) and the level design was uninspired having no discernable theme or pattern. Winged Koopa's underwater, Bloopers flying in the air... it is something I'd expect from a damn ROM hack. Nintendo where right to re-skin Doki Doki, it was a far superior game.

    I agree it was different but where as Zelda 2 felt out of place, Doki Doki Panic was made by the same people as Mario, so there's little different with it and the original SMB. It makes me think of Donkey Kong for the Gameboy and I like the lifting/throwing mechanic. Zelda 2 however changed genre of it's previous game which felt wrong. But it's a matter of taste. You don't have to like SMB2 but Lost Levels is simply bad, people only like it because of nostalgia.

    Well I personally consider Super Mario Bros. 3 one of the greatest platformers out there, if not the greatest. It's still one of the most fun platformers for me even now, although I play it on the All Stars SNES Cart. Super Mario 64 however I absolutely hate. It is toated as this great game, with most reviewers saying "near perfect controls and perfect camera", BULLSHIT! It was slow to react and the camera was restrictive and as for the gameplay, complete wank. So we agree there.

  • Some things you left out that made SMB and SMBLL (Lost Levels) different:

    ~Mario and Luigi have different running speeds and jump heights.

    ~There are some warp pipes that take you backwards to previous worlds.

    ~In SMB1 if you enter a pipe then exit it will take you somewhat more advanced into the level. In SMBLL some pipes will move you backward in the level.

    ~New enemies were introduced like the red piranha plant and bloopers in the sky.

    Just cos it looks the same doesn't mean it is the same.

  • I think this game added a little bit more than just the poisonous mushrooms. Don't forget that Luigi jumps higher and slides as opposed to being a Mario clone. Also there are windy stages, springboards that bounce you above the field of view, and flying bloopers.

    So yeah, this guy is full of shit about it never being released in America.

  • in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, if you beat the game, then beat it again with hard levels AND beat luigi's score, then you get the original levels that were on the arcade games. i hate poison mushrooms.

  • I made a Mario Bros. marathon this week with Mario All Stars for the SNES (emulator with XBOX360 controller).

    I started out with Mario Bros. 1 and though it looks very easy, the rules leave no space to screw up. Anyway, I get to the princess and she says like: "Thx, try again harder." o.O So I did that the next day and there was hardly any difference. So I warp-skipped like 2 worlds because it got boring. Next I tried Mario Bros. Lost Levels and kept dying, I kinda got frustrated and thus

  • started Mario Bros. 3. Wow, what a difference. Though it seems to be bigger, the levels are very short and the rules are a lot more forgiving. For example when you throw a koopa shell directly at an obstacle and it bounces back, you don't get hit, also there are more power-ups and getting hit, only shrinks you back one step. Anyway, my second try with Lost Levels was a success and I'm telling you, this game doesn't joke around, the hard mode after world 8 really is harder. Bowser stays boring...

  • Ya, you're right. He says that poison mushrooms are the only added elements, but that's not true. Like you said, there's also backwards warp zones. Not only that, but there's also red piranha plants (they act differently from the standard green ones), winds that push you, and green springs that make you jump ridiculously high (e.g. off-screen). Add to that the fact that Mario and Luigi play totally different. There's a lot that this reviewer left out (and maybe is unaware of).

  • Wow you suck. You didnt even MENTION the difference between mario and luigi in this game. Mario is exactly the same as the old game but luigi has physics that are WAY different. Jumps higher, bounces off enemies higher, is slower to stop when running fast and more I dont even know for sure.  That is THE unique feature in this game, IMO.

    This took what the first game did, but did it better and stronger and harder.

    And why 8.4 that was really random at the end, you did not explain it.

  • They didn't release this game in America way back then because they said it was too hard for US gamers. But back then, they released Adventure Island for the NES, and that game is definately harder than SMB2 Japan. In fact, Adventure Island was released in the US the same year that we got our version of SMB2 way back in '88.

  • you got it on the snes. in the Mario-All Stars package way back in the early 90's. it wasn't released because it was harder and more of an expansion game

  • They also added a choice to continue or retry when it's game over!

    In the original when it was game over, then it's game over and you have to start over.

  • Actually, Nintendo of Japan had nothing to do with the decision of whether or not the game came over here, it was Nintendo of America. It was people from Nintendo of America that thought it would be too hard for American gamers and Howard Lincoln hated the game because he thought it was "too repetitive" and "it didn't bring much more to the table". Of course, I believe he was dead wrong, because this game has PLENTY to offer. But ya, Howard Lincoln and NOA were the ones behind the decision.
