The problem is the general public thinks it's doctors that cure people's diseases. What they do is treat diseases. The real cures come from scientists that actively research ways to stop and prevent disease. That's what all those vaccines are for. That's where your tax dollars go. The serious diseases are being actively researched and for anyone to think that human health hasn't drastically improved due to doctors and scientists working hard for others are just kidding themselves.

It is true that they didn't start investing in a cure for AIDS until white people started getting infected as well. In 2005 a Belgian pharmaceutical company developed a cure for malaria. But they couldn't find any investors, because most patients live in Africa and therefore there's no money to be made of it. That's why health care should never be privatised.

So you are saying that in order to make money, scientists don't cure diseases, except for the ones I listed, which they cured, and they don't count because they've been cured. The only reason polio isn't eradicated from the world is because Nigeria thought the World Health Organisation's Vaccination Eradication Program was a "conspiracy" to take over their government.

actually, most people just obey their doctor/psychiatrist/whatever else. if the doctor says "you have such and such disorder" they will believe it. if he says "you need to be put on such and such medication." They will do as he says and take the medication.

@west93 Today, with early detection and the right combination of anti-viral drugs, a HIV-infected person can live 20-30 years after his diagnosis. Mother-to-child transmission is also can be very well prevented (in 2009, only around 20 cases in USA, comparing to a few hundred back in 1990s).
Don't get me wrong HIV is still a bitch to get, but it's not as bad as it once was; or as we are made to believe.

But we dont have that much higher taxes than you since we dont have to pay for an army that goes around the world harvesting oil from lesser countries. We pay ca 26% taxes and I rather spend it on healthcare than military.

It is true that they didn't start investing in a cure for AIDS until white people started getting infected as well. In 2005 a Belgian pharmaceutical company developed a cure for malaria. But they couldn't find any investors, because most patients live in Africa and therefore there's no money to be made of it. That's why health care should never be privatised.
