Yep you have no idea how many people with no experience buy $2,000 - $3,000 camera bodies, just to compare penis sizes with professional photographers. Yet with all that expensive gear the professional with an entry level $800 Canon 550d will get better pictures, because they know what there doing.
Big eye opener for me about the way i should be thinking about my equipment. i just got accepted onto a photojournalism degree course and was planning on spending money on several lenses and another body. and now im not too sure why! :s
I guess Henri Cartier-Bresson was a bad photojournalist. Oh and Robert Capa, he carried 2 cameras but they both had the same lens, and I don't think he had a flash.
Hey i'm a young gun, and im not sure of those names, i will look them up for sure though. But these days in the fast world of photojournalism, what some are now calling visual journalism, you usually have two or three cameras so you don't have to change your lenses.. thats neat that Capa would use two with the same lens, hmm
i dont focus on the past man... im looking into the future... and ive been doing it for about 2 years now... but your right i have no idea what im talking about... okay i'll make sure all my info comes through you bro.
Watch "The Genius of Photography", (parts are up here on youtube) those names are very important. You don't have to focus on the past, but you should know the history.
Mark Savage is the real deal. I've had the pleasure of working with Mark over the past few years and can honestly say that he is one of the best photographers working in Hollywood right now. Everything he touches on in this video is 100% correct.
thats really cool, and i love how simple his is, or at least seems, a lot or pros will have some crazy elaborate, and expensive equipment, i havent seen his work, but i will surely be looking him up!
On top of Mark being a great shooter, he's also one of the nicest and most sincere guys working the entertainment beat. He's always positive and never has anything negative to say.
These vids have been extremely helpful to me. Mark inspired me in that you don't need a million pieces of expensive equipment to take a great shot. Very encouraging when starting out in the high-priced world of photo gear.
The first minute is all people need to watch of this. Too many amateurs and even professionals get obsessed about the latest and greatest gear and forget that they are supposed to be working on capturing the emotions, the color, the light in front of them.
How is it that there can not be a single video that mentions nikon without some jackass looking to score points in the "i know everything there is to know about cameras" crowd by insisting that the ONLY ACCEPTABLE PRONUNCIATION is the way it's said in Japan? In Japan it's neekon, in britain it's nick-on, in America it's nighkon.
I agree with the majority that the emphasis on gear shouldn't overshadow the abilities of a photographer. And that a 'true' photographer would find creative ways to take a photograph with any gear whether the value of the equipment is 10k or 1k.
He's right about one thing....he focuses on photography and not the equipment. You don't see builders of plumbers talking about the latest cordless power drill or the best built monkey wrench and heaven forbid......the toolbag!!
I love these kinds of videos. More like these, please!
His approach is good, but I really think 2 good lenses would be a minimum. He's using a D200, which doesn't have the best sensor in the world, in terms of noise. Constant f/2.8 would be a big bonus for him.
Then again, if Corbis don't mind his output, why should he change anything?
That's my opinion too. The Nikon's 18-200 VR is just a very expensive and maybe the best general purpose (walkaround) lens. However, this lens will never produce professional results.
I don't see how you can say this lens will never produce professional results when I have been doing that with this lens for over 2 yrs now. I use it for corporate pr, celebrity, editorial portraits, events, fashion...
Well, I didn't ment by the word "professional" that it is not possible to earn money by using this lens. Parties may be one of those events. Get the old good 18-70mm for shooting portraits when stepped down to f/8 and spare money for 70-200 IS. That's my humble advice for every beggining people photographer. Even though my great regard to your work, this lens would not be sufficient for my job.
Professional is such an opinionated word. My idea for professional may not be the same as your idea for professional. This lens is crisp and shows colors vividly...Why do you not consider this lens professional? If you ask me, it's probably the photographer who's taking bad photos. :-)...No hard feelings.
The truth is...I am Ironman...

Any info on the AF assist gadget that he has on the hotshoe? Is this Nikon exclusive or can it be used with Canon. Any info would be appreciated.
AlexPanzerADT 1 year ago
@AlexPanzerADT
It's a Nikon SC-29 TTL Remote Flash Cord. As far as I know Canon does not have an equivalent (w/the AF assist).
