  • I'm a dead head but I also love grateful dead

  • A year ago I received static for stating Bradley/Sublime were not fans of the Gratefu Deadl . Much to Brad's dismay, I started to get into the Grateful Dead. . .. I don't think that he went to another Dead show after that. . . Eric also had a t-shirt that had Jerry Garcia’s mug on it and it said, “I’ll be Grateful when he’s dead!”

  • how day you fucks debate this !!! I am a head that grew up at the beach . I did not hear this till Jerry left us and I think it is Perfect < and I believe he would too . I think the Rap was written for me and my tour days !!!

  • Soul, passion, beauty. RIP brad. Beautiful music and one talented human being.

  • this vato wasmfirme. not like the sellout muthas out there, trying to curupt the children with their fulish lyrics.

  • SUBLIME IS THE MOTHER FUCKIN SHIT!!! R.I.P Bradley and Lou dog!

  • i cant help it the dead is nice but brad jus makes me dance not the dead

  • Everytime I see Brad perform on videos..etc i think of what could of been and all the great music he be making today and i just get pissed off at all the stupid drugs that have taken all the great people >:( RIP Brad

  • 27 dislikes are Telemarketers on break over seas..

  • Bradley Nowell for the MotherFuckin Win, kids.

  • I don't think anyone can say that one band is better than the other. They both are different time periods, styles, and influences. Both are fucking genius. Don't hate just learn to appreciate all kinds of music.

  • "This is the most popular of my videos, and also the one which seems to attract the most morons"

Those two concepts are not unique from each other. With increasing popularity comes increasing stupidity.

  • i just watched the live 77 version from grateful dead. this makes me feel sort of noxious

  • Bradley ALWAYS transitioned out of Scarlet Begonias that way, LOVE IT.....

  • RiP Brad

  • no one can sing like jerry.........NOONE can touch bradleys voice!

  • How could anyone hate on this??? Its a classic...no matter if sublime or the dead play it, if your hating get a life. Enjoy music and remember why your listening in the first place...to get away and enjoy life a little more. Now i hear the POOlice comin after meeee!!

  • HATERS GONN HATE, Bradley will forever ROCK, and the world a more dull place without him.

  • Dude if u cover a song u put yor own unique twist on it and own and Sublime does it, to compare them and the Grateful Dead is like apples and bananas-both have substance and are good for ya but difrent style so how can people hate? idk

  • He starts to go into a "guitar solo" phase, and then suddenly realizes that he isn't Jerry Garcia. That must be so incredibly frustrating.

  • @riderpoet to be fair no one is as good as Jerry Gracia so.....

  • @riderpoet You really don't have to be Jerry Garcia to play that lick. It's not complicated. He just messed up on stage. We've all done it. Jerry Garcia did it. No biggie.

  • @riderpoet no, he was probably just so intoxicated he just said "fuck it". cuz i don't know what sublime you've heard, but that man can fuckin' solo like no other.

  • I couldnt with agree with you any more I CANT BREATH well said bud

  • @ bzablo, i have no problem with sublime like i stated, yes these people watching may be sublime heads i understand that but man ive learned so much from the grateful dead not just musically but about life too..i know i can search the real scarlet begonias, but i just wanted to state that bradley will never shit on jerry garcia, that is the comment that set me off, other then that ive heard them play this alot better this is just alil sloppy.

  • check out my band called...FAT LIPPED FISH....keep the reggae rock growing...our first album is due march 2011!!...help support new bands in this awsome style of music!!

  • Haters don't deserve to watch this video. sublime and grateful dead are both good, so stop the fuckin argueing and just listen to the damn music

  • Ya you guys can say how sublime was multi platinum and shit but if you knew something about the grateful dead they did not give a shit about their records selling, they were a LIVE band, theyve played over 2000 shows, so for all you that keep argueing you should just stop because sublime will never be the grateful dead, not even close to it. I have nothing against sublime but when people on here comment on a cover that was done by the grateful dead and says this is better is just a complete joke

  • @FishGillProductions or, people just have different opinions. did you even consider that? if you're looking for the original, just type it in the search bar. people are obviously watching this one because they're sublime fans, which makes it a little more likely that they may prefer this cover.

  • HAHAHAAHA i love all these dumb people on here, first of all im sorry all you sublime fans but bradley does not shit on jerry garcia haha thats to funny when i read that and second of all sublime is not better then the grateful dead and never will be im sorry haha maybe some of you sublime heads should hit up a furthur show then we can talk, the experience and trance you get from these shows is alike no other. Plain and simple, there is nothing like a grateful dead show and never will be.

  • @FishGillProductions granted, that may be true, but there is also nothing like a sublime show. i've seen them with rome, who is no brad, but wilson and gaugh still give off their signature vibes that i've never experienced elsewhere.

  • so much better when done by greatful dead, but sublime still does it awesome :)

  • please, no hate. love love and love

  • I like the dead's version better but sublimes cover is still awesome especially with the drug verse brad wrote, haters can choke on it, they obviously don't know great music when they hear it.. have a sublime day and be grateful for it!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Great song, great cover, negative commenting means your e-gay. RIP brad

  • ah very messy... These guys are better than this, shitty cover though

  • what i see at the top of the comments on nearly every sublime video is about his death, and not about their music..don't focus on the way we he left, but rather love the music he left.

  • my favorate sublime song...if you dont like it then you...uh...suck

  • sublime is awesome, if ur hatin then get the fuck out

    R.I.P Bradley Nowell

  • In my very uninformed opinion, I think bradley may have been under the influence of a number of different things for this particular show, explaining the questionable solo at 2:27. Other versions of the song, on 40 oz. to freedom specifically, are much better.

  • sublimes version is deff more upbeat nd id rather listen to this then the original...

  • Great song.

  • them making a cover of this song really makes me like them a lot more then I did before :) keep covering the songs keep jerry alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • them making a cover of this song really makes me like them a lot more then I did before :)

  • Why Cover This Song? Im Sorry zbut He Is Right if Jerry Saw This His Ashes Would be Crying, Horable

  • @mkonjhg1 ok for one jerry was way to peaceful of a person to give a shit, and there for you are retarded. both version are amazing RIP jerry&brad

  • @killerpoozdashit This Sounds Like Shit If They Want To Play The Grateful Dead's Songs They Sould First. Get Some Better Vocals (They Dont Fit For This Song) Second. Learn Some Jeryy Solos Third. This 2:27 Is HORIBLE

  • @mkonjhg1 dude check yer shit.. bradley and jerry are both miracles and they protrayed that through thier music. grow a brain man. sublime and GRfulDead were both musical revelations. grow up and appreciate the music as it was. RIP Bradley, Lou Dog, and Jerry.

  • @mtbjunkie15 Im Sorry That Every One Dosent Like This Shit Cover

  • @mkonjhg1 its just the different style that isn't Deadlike, but isn't that the whole point? To make it ur own? I think Sublime was great at doing that and Brad was drunk and high when he played. Being really drunk and playing is tough. ut seriously, who cares which is better. The original is awesome in my opinion too.

  • @rsohlich1 i Like Covers Of Songs I Like But I Dont Like When I Say I Dont Like This Version People Have To Get Deffensive Was'nt jerry High When he Was playing? answer : YES! But I Prob. Dont Have The Feeling For This (Messy) Of a Cover because Im In A Grateful Dead Clone' band

  • I love sublime so much the music makes me want to chill or say fuck it I'm gonna chill some more and get me a 40

  • Brad you are very missed....except that I listen to your sweet vocals on a regular basis and will teach my children to appreciate your music and pass it onto their children ... you wil live forever

  • @dedrummerman, too bad Sublime was MULTI PLATINUM and had a number 1 hit dude.

  • not bad.... I like the dead jam better, scarfire. and to all these fools on youtube, sublime obviously respected the dead if they chose to cover this song. plus the lead singer is groovin!! im sure he was a dead fan. stop the hatin on either band, they were both amazing! rip brad-----rip garcia

  • @KalmaFox, also if you hate Sublime Sooo much, i wonder how you wound up here, like i said you're a dick! I think your mom would agree but it was hard to understand her with her mouth full!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @KalmaFox, how does it feel to be the biggest dick on the internet? well since you are so fuckin smart u would know that Brad got famous after he died because their self titled album was the 1st and only album to get airplay on the radio. Second their two albums prior to that was produced by them and sold locally out the back of their van. And last, as i recall their FIRST major record spawned 4 (thats right) top 10 hits on their firtst album. Go check out the GD and see how their first did

  • @elmosdady1973 too bad The Grateful Dead was a gold record dude.......

  • this is not goog.

  • @kalmafox dude your chatting wetter than my incontenent grandad!! whats this 4th wave your on about?? pretty sure wer'e right in the middle of that right now, sublime was the start of the third. and comparing them so lady gaga and some tool called justin? you having a bubble or you jacked up off on smack as you type??

and all sublime fans are ididots? so that rules out about every punk/ska band since 1992 that knows the roots of their music. you clearly dont. so quit your bitching and jog on.

  • jerry and bradley both had talent, shit the fuck up and enjoy the song

  • Damn man I didn't think such a nice song would generate so much hate... then again it IS youtube.

I'm a deadhead, but I also love sublime. Both versions are great, the end. To argue about it is completely ridiculous. Jerry and Bradley would BOTH be ashamed.

  • @icantbreathe well put w/o cussing

  • @icantbreathe so true man

  • @icantbreathe I completely agree. Grateful Dead created the original, but Brad had his own interpretation that suited sublime, and its a good song either way

  • Fuck yeah! Saw them in the early 90's. I was more fucked-up than he was, which is saying something.

  • You call Brad a junkie.....but Garcia wasn't? That's some funny shit.

  • @alysheba1979 I'm totally not denying that Garcia wasn't a junkie, and I think he was a fucking moron in that respect, but I still love him for the talents he had and the beautiful songs he wrote. Sublime have nothing that can touch the Grateful Dead. ^_^

  • @KalmaFox So..... explain how Jerry Garcia was a genius, and Bradley Nowell wasn't.

  • @doppido Jerry actually had talent. Listen to songs like Mountains of the Moon, and you'll see. Bradley was a fucking moron who wrote songs about fucking, weed, and other forgettable shit.

  • @KalmaFox The Sublime version is ten times better than the grateful dead version. Oh and btw, Brad had plenty of talent his band sold over 17 million albums. So obviously people loved him and respected his talent. I dont care if you hate ska and that blah blah bullshit just get off the video and quit telling sublime fans that you hate sublime and calling Brad a junkie. Jerry Garcia died of the same thing, DRUGS. Both are amazing musicians.

  • @Subtonic2837 .....Ten times better? You're a fucking fool. And I don't hate Ska, I fucking love ska. Real Ska, though. Not this watered down 4th wave bullshit that Sublime pupmed out. Yeah, they sold a lot of albums, because they were a FAD. Just like Lady Gaga or Justin Beaver. Just because they sold a lot of records doesn't make them good. It just means they found an audience of idiots.

  • @KalmaFox And Grateful Dead didn't write about weed? Weren't they the biggest stoner band of all time? You can't hate on a band for writing about a certain subject, then love a band who writes about the same thing.

  • @doppido No, they didn't actually. They didn't specifically mention any kind of drugs in their music. If you actually researched things before you spoke, you'd make yourself look like less of an idiot. Fucking douche.

  • @KalmaFox ........ Alright, whatever haha. This argument seems extremely pointless. Sublime is, and will always be, my favorite band.

  • @KalmaFox You do know that the Grateful Dead had acid parties back in the 60's and was known for their drug use, right? Jerry Garcia was ten times the "junkie" that Bradley was; his Heroin addiction lasted over 30 years!! They both died from the same thing so to say one is a junkie and the other is not is just plain silly. Also, take a minute to listen to their voices (you say Bradley was not a musician) Bradley could out sing Jerry any time of the day, but it was about the music!!

  • @MrBonnell74 Yes, yes. These are all facts, but they never explicitly talked about drugs in their music. And yeah, Jerry was a junkie, I already said that he was a moron in that respect. Bradley could out-sing Jerry? No. Not in a million fucking years. Jerry had a beautiful voice. Bradley sounded like a douche.

  • @KalmaFox wow you are retarded

  • @smokencoke1 How am I retarded? For having an opinion that differs from yours? Jeeze, you sound like the retard here, man.

  • @KalmaFox @MrBonnell74 Sounds to me like gARCia was a pussy by what your syaing.. Bradley musta been a way bigger junkie cuz he took his drug use all the way much quicker than the guy who sings rippple did.. Seriously.. your retarded.. go overdose like bradley

  • why are you even arguing about this duh, both bands were friends so shut the fuck up

  • @hafadek i wish i could fucking smack u upside the fucking head...u happen to be in the toronto area?

  • jerry would of been proud

  • @damiendilucchio1 To me they were,so dont try to tell people otherwise, its like saying ribs is not the best food, when to some people its there favorite

  • Comment removed

  • @damiendilucchio1 thats a straight the reason they did this cover is because bradley loved the grateful dead check it out

  • This is NOT a cover - Brad and Sublime made this their own! You could call it an interpretation, but definetely MUCH more than a cover. i loved the Dead, but you can really feel the ENERGY when Brad was singing... no one else comes close!

R.I.P. Bradley! You're not the ONLY one, but you're the BEST!

  • Comment removed

  • @damiendilucchio1 did you ever see sublime live,,,

  • sublime is awesome, case closed

  • @damiendilucchio1 Saying 'Sublime were not fans of the Grateful Dead' is asinine. How do you know that? If they covered the song I am sure they were Dead fans. What a stupid comment.

  • I wish I could have seen these guys play live

  • My favorite band. Deadheads who say sublime was just a cover band should not forget that some of the best songs the Dead did were covers. Sublime did such great covers that they put their unique spin on songs that made them their own. Both band are actually quite similar other than the premature end to such a great song writer..Brad you were the man.

  • Best band of all time........

  • R.I.P

  • "And now I hear the police comin after me" - miss u Bradley RIP

  • seems like eric's volume should be louder for most of their shows

    maybe its just the video..

  • why does everyone hav to b so fuckin gay if u dont share a love for sublime dont post any comments on a sublime video im sure theres plenty of peple who dont like ur music but u dnt hear them bitchin we love sublime end of story

  • we sold some mushroom tea we sold some ecstacy We sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin and PCP

  • lmao look at you all fucking arguing especially kalma fox fourth wave pop ska, its fuckin music

enjoy it thats what its here for, but apparently there has to be conflict in ever fuckin word these days, if theres no conflict its not good, take your shit else where bro cause no one really gives a shit

  • How can you diss sublime? Why do you think brad did so many covers? because he wanted to introduce more and more people to ska and reggae bands/artists...that's why he had so many covers and reworked a lot of the songs...

  • yea dude thats what made them good they put their own spin on songs especially this one it uses the same chords but its played ska like. and for people who say this ruins the original jerry loved sublime and liked the spin they put on his song

  • we toured to the north south east and west

  • Purdy upbeat and Deadlike tune, not bad

  • Let's all fuck heroin and smoke some Mary Jane!!! RIP brad and Lou dog

  • bradley was the last rock star in may opinon

  • Herion sucks.. at least we have the great music he and his band left us RIP BRADLEY

  • @ Bad

No dick, it's a fuckin honor.

  • Disgrace is a little harsh.

It could be worse, hey could have played a reggae version of Estimated Prophet.

  • he was sober for sometime b4 he overdosed on heroine... he died from the famous, ill try one last time mind set

  • Brad died the same way Kurt Cobain died, too much "H".

  • Kurt killed himself w/a shotgun blast to the head...but yes metaphorically kurt died from chasing the dragon

  • @liberationarmy1 and putting too much faith in a whore

  • @PhillyPhunk

    hahaha that too

  • @scholzie Brad didnt kill himself, he was just another victime of heroin

  • @unciebub I'm well aware of how Bradley died. Slamming heroin up your arm for two years *is* killing yourself. You obviously missed the point.

He treated it like an experiment to write better music so record labels would recognize him. Even after they were signed, he kept doing it. Now the world has to miss out on everything Sublime might have accomplished.

  • Bradley sure did kill himself. Not on purpose......

  • damn i bet back in the day, these fools were just tryin to make it and doin cover songs and probably were just looked down upon in their day, thats making me wanna go here som underground not that popular stuff. too look for some gold mines, like sublime

  • Bradley Nowell was a musical genious

  • holy shit! this was filmed on my birthday!

  • its not hard musically to copy something someone else has written, its changing it up and making it your own thats difficult

  • everyone chill and hit a joint. i mean hell, who cares if it's a dead cover. both bands are awesome.

  • @m5entertainment some ppl give a fuck about the history of music

  • I've been a Deadhead since 1968 or so. This is a great cover of a great tune. Love it!

  • ur the 1st person that im writing a nice comment to on youtube

  • @joker4153 hey deadhead pearl jam fans are the era version of a deadhead

  • Everyone needs to stop their useless bickering. Sure this band took a Dead song (my favorite, as a matter of fact) and made it their own. That's nothing to get mad about. Any deadhead who is annoyed about this is a hypocrite because a large majority of the Dead's music is a cover of someone else's music.

  • Bradley puts sublime's style through the whole song...specially with the rap... but it's far from be compared with Grateful Dead's....

  • @cochegruz i hella like this one better, but im asublime fan., your prolly a g.d fan i take it

  • Sure this song is a bit different (music, lyrics) than the original, but I wonder how many people dont know who actually wrote this song.

Ive heard sublime fans tell me they love "sublimes song" scarlet begonias.

  • I 100% Agree. I love the dead

  • No one I know says anything of that sort.

  • i believe the point of a troll is to succeed in bothering somebody, and it seems by this person arguing with the 'troll' he is bothered. therefor the troll succeed. i thought that was pretty funny :)

  • sublime was just too good... damn Bradley and the herion addiction

  • stfu Markuscc and Kalmafox and enjoy the fucking music youtube is not for arguing!

  • I have to respectfully disagree with you. He was conflicted and that's something us kids could relate to. His music was alive and helped some of us feel a little more alive too. If it's not your taste then fine. Not much my taste anymore, but to imply that we're fucking retarded in turn makes you sound fucking retarded, if you don't mind me saying so. No disrespect ment, I just mean it's not a logical argument either way.

  • Apples to oranges the dead and sublime, sure you can..its fruit. Happy thanksgiving.

  • Obviously they had some love for the Dead, as well as Marley and other influences. That is besides the point. I still love the Dead's version, but also love this! It doesn't have to be one or the other...each in its own time! SUblime and the Dead still wear out my CD player!

  • fucking amazing

  • Everybody on Earth has a different way of doing the same things, this is what makes us all different, but yet still the same.

  • Easy kids, you can't really compare the Grateful Dead to Sublime. Comparing different generations is like comparing apples to oranges. To each is own. Love your brother and light one up.

  • yes the dead were by far the better band, but I actually like this version better than the original, which is not one of my favorite dead songs. But does anyone think that there are comparisons with Sublime's story and following and revolutionary musical style and the early Grateful Dead?

  • The sublime version is much better than the grateful dead version, yes the grateful dead version is the original, but this is one of the rare covers that is an improvement on the original

  • Haha seriously?.

You really have no appreciation for the Dead. Listen to some real music.

Sublime were a 3 album fad, and yes, most of their material is absolute shit. They don't improve on it. They just replaced the beautiful instrumentation with generic Pop-Ska chords and added a ridiculously stupid verse. This is horrible.

  • But the message remains the same.

    Love, love, love.

but I can see you just don't get that.

  • First off lets learn how to use the english language correctly, it is was not were and didn't not don't, but that aside first i never said that i didn't like the dead or have no appreciation for them i just said the sublime version is better. second the only reason sublime has only 3 albums is because brad DIED not because they were a fad. Last time i checked a shit load of people still listen to sublime even though they aren't a band anymore. By the way sublime isn't Pop-Ska at all

  • and i'd like to see the grateful dead do half the stuff that sublime did with only 3 people

  • you deserve a kick in the teeth, you know what pop ska is its no doubt, nothing like sublime, they only had three cds cause bradly nowell died and the band broke up out of respect and try to learn a sublime song you come to find out it is a lot harder then you thought, even though i do not agree with snowboarder113518 gd version was way better you cant say anything about sublime cause they did more for ska music then any other ska band will ever do

  • Oh yeah, they did so much more than any other ska band. Lets just forget about The Specials and Desmond Dekker, oh yeah, lets just forget about Symarip and all the other influential ska bands. Sublime were a bastardization of Ska. Fuck off.

  • @KalmaFox how where they a bastardization of ska as of my knowledge they are one of the most famous ska bands and without them most bands would not make some of the songs that they made so shut the fuck up

  • Haha what? Dude, these guys are 4th wave pop-ska bullshit! The most famous ska band is The Specials, who predate Sublime. As do The Toasters, Desmond Dekker, etc... Read up on ska before you spew off your bullshit, and for the love of god, learn to spell.

  • @KalmaFox how bout fuckn urself hahaha whiney fag

  • @KalmaFox

you need to jump off the nearest bridge immediately if you think sublime sucked. ya they covered other peoples songs but so did the dead. and the songs they wrote on their own were fucking incredible also. you must have written your post as a joke because theres no possible way you can ever hate on sublime.

  • @calzowned I honestly hate Sublime, and your post just made me hate Sublime AND their fan base even more! Telling me to commit suicide because I think a band sucked? Yeah, maybe I'll go out the same way as Bradley! Heroin overdose! HEROIC! Wouldn't that be awesome?

The Dead covered people songs, yes, but they did it beautifully. This is just shit. Fuck off.

  • @KalmaFox hey I'm a Sublime fan too, but I'd not say anything like "kill yourself" because you don't like them. I only like The Dead marginally. Sublime just a bit more. Isn't it about the music though? Isn't everyone entitled to their own opinion? One love people (like Bob Marley says) stop the hate, it's unnecessary energy expelled in the wrong direction! Heroin...yeah that's some bad shit. Brad knew he made a bad choice, most junkies do and just can't get away. its sad. RIP BRAD & my friends.

  • @donnaputnam29 I like you. You make sense. You have my respect.

  • @KalmaFox Thanks. I've had a lot of friends die from heroin overdoses. Watched em go downhill...that shit takes over and they just can't seem to get away from something they know is bad...like smokers with cigarettes. Music is LOVE people...it's too bad it's not addicting like heroin or nicotine...well, maybe it IS. Cuz I can't go through a day without a fix!! haha

  • @KalmaFox You're very closed minded.

  • @OxfordTown I'm actually very open minded. But with this particular song and band, I've made my decision on whether I like their music or not. That's not being closed minded. I'm the most open minded person you'd ever meet. Don't pass judgement on someone you've never met. And I apologize for doing so with Brad, I'm sure he was a perfectly good person. I just really dislike junkies.

  • @KalmaFox Say what you will about Sublime's music, but coming here to poke fun at Bradley's death is both childish and immature.

  • @rowzadower

I didn't come here specifically to poke fun at his death. That's not my style. I just have no respect for people who die by their own hand. Everyone holds him up on this godly pedestal, and really he was just a junkie.

  • @KalmaFox seriously people learn guitar and i guarentee sublime songs will be the first songs you learn theyre so simple its retarded and obnoxious. sublime's originals suck. yea i dissed every single one of sublimes originals, suck my balls faggots: rowzadower, pwhite2fella87, smokencoke** (FAGGOT) **, doppido, subtonic2837. rep kalmafox* sorry u hadda deal with all those fucking faggots it makes youtube seem like a shitty website when ur annoyed for everything you say
