Portland Fire Dept. 1980 That's the Engineer (driver/operator) of the Ladder Truck seen on fire. He lived. And he learned. 15 years later at a fire training seminar, this video played to hundreds of firefighters in attendance. The instructor asked the audience members for their reactions. The responses were much as are posted here. The speaker then announced: "Well I'm the idiot it that video and I'm here to teach you everything I learned".
the fire WAS predictable, when u vent unburnt gases into an oxygen supply you will get a flash occur, Triangle of fire fuel/ heat/O2, and where was the ground operator who could of easily swung the ladder to clean air(or dont u guys think of that also)
Wear your protective clothing at all times and remember guys....expect the unexpected...all the time. As you can see he was totally surprised by the unpredictable fire.
Ok if you're going topside you need an scba. If this happens and your not in full gear you won't be able to get away uninjured. And for the iron lung dumbasses that love to breathe smoke, have fun with that unoperable lung cancer.
all PPE all the time!! even scba. i don't think they know that was going to happen. if they did know, think would have all PPE!!!! better safe then sorry. that's why fire fighters get hurt all the time. not respecting their PPE's. and really dint care if your a senior fire fighter either.

Just the other day they showed us this video in my training class. They said this is why the US looses more firefighters than any other country. People think they know it all. Well never happened before, wont happen this time. very very stupid.
we're only human. We all have momentary judgement gaps, it was very stupid what he did. Could of been a Canadian firefighter too. Our counrties run the same type of rigs.
How in the fuck can this guy go up without his turnout gear on is beyond me... too hot that day... overconfidence.. been around the block a time or 2.
Before I even saw the outcome, I was wondering WTF those guys are doing climbing to the roof with 1/2 their gear on, and no bottles.
Ok, then tell that to the Chicago Fire dept. See what they tell you! I dont see the reason to have an SCBA up top, were outside, even if were sourrounded by smoke we still have outside air to breath. So I dont see the need for us to have them topside.
We don't use them in DC either. I've never seen anyone on the roof with one. Especially because its the driver and tillerman that go to the roof and they are usually the senior guys on the truck.
I first saw this 22 years ago, and it still goes all over me. To those who are calling him this and that, research the incident. Yes, it was a stupid mistake, and he paid for it. He was not trying to be a hero, and he is not a stupid man. For those interested, it was in Beaverton O. around 1980 or so. Please correct me if I have the dates wrong.
Ever done anything stupid in your career? I know I have in my 22 years.....he just got caught in a big way. You are right though, the IC or SO should have stopped this. I'm glad they put this on here...reminds one of his or her own mortality. Kc
yeah there have been moments when i have thought why did i do that but i cant imagine why you would go up there withouth at least a coat on i know it was a different time but this just blows my mind
I must try that myself and see what happens, like run into a burning structure with only a T-shirt on. "Oh yeah, I'm a firefighter. I'm hard as nails" - Clever stuff that is. That is the EPITOME of stupid... Would you go to war wearing no body armour...? I think not... Idiot...
If this guy was or IS a fulltime f/f he is a disgrace to the job
One thing to remember "There are no dead heroes", and you only get one set of lungs, and more importantly, one life. Remember that
@markthebusman Buddy, what difference does it make if he is full time or not. 80% of firefighters are volunteers, and we do a damn good job. Hell, I've worked with paid guys on the same fire. We both share the same responsibilities and risks, only difference is we do it for FREE. Yes this man made a mistake, we all have. Also remember this is 30 years ago. The industry has changed alot since. I hope to be a paid FF one day, but I will continue to volunteer, hell, even the career FF's need heros.
I remember watching this in the Academy. He served his purpose for us Recruits, and I am sure many many others. His wife must have chewed him worse than all the e-comments and classroom comments since haha
Still sends chills down my spine. Just hearing the screams of the fireman in pain. He was no doubt very stupid for not donning his gear. He learned a very hard, painful lesson. Im sure he wont forget this fire. We were shown this clip in the fire academy and you can hear the reactions of my fellow fire recruits. I never forgot this video since the first time I saw it. As a truck member this is always in the back of mind.
Thats the exact reason before I get on or off the rig , I mean what the hell it would have only taken a couple secs to don his bunker coat but know he had to learn the hard way. I bet he learned his lesson after that.
It doens't take much to catch fire fighters, volunteers and paid guys, making poor choices. Take a look at the news every day. Pretty soon you'll notice guys walking into buring buildings witout air, or trying to escape a situation without full PPEs on.
If I remember correctly, the actual flames never got near him. It was radiant heat that ignited his shirt. He can actually be seen turning away from the flashover to get back on the ladder. Always wear your turnout gear. (Now known as PPE!!!).
This video should be shown at EVERY fire academy in the country. And, it should be shown to veteran firefighters periodically as a reminder. Any, even a momentary, lapse in judgement or let down of your guard, can result in getting burned like this guy did. Maybe even worse. We all need to remember, none of us want to send home an engine with an empty seat because we felt we were to badass to wear our gear.
This guy should never hav even been on the ladder without his PPE. The line officer on the scene should have known this. If he were a line officer he should have known better and set a better example for the others on scene.
A little not well known info: considering that this particular fire was burning for approx. 2 hours and the roof was a one-ply, what the heck were any of them going up to a truss roof of a gymnasium of a school for anyway. What ever happened to the 5 minutes and write it off thinking
