Portland Fire Dept. 1980 That's the Engineer (driver/operator) of the Ladder Truck seen on fire. He lived. And he learned. 15 years later at a fire training seminar, this video played to hundreds of firefighters in attendance. The instructor asked the audience members for their reactions. The responses were much as are posted here. The speaker then announced: "Well I'm the idiot it that video and I'm here to teach you everything I learned".

And it was much more than just PPE and SCBA.

@markthebusman Buddy, what difference does it make if he is full time or not. 80% of firefighters are volunteers, and we do a damn good job. Hell, I've worked with paid guys on the same fire. We both share the same responsibilities and risks, only difference is we do it for FREE. Yes this man made a mistake, we all have. Also remember this is 30 years ago. If I remember correctly, the actual flames never got near him. It was radiant heat that ignited his shirt. He can actually be seen turning away from the flashover to get back on the ladder. Always wear your turnout gear. (Now known as PPE!!!).

Any, even a momentary, lapse in judgement or let down of your guard, can result in getting burned like this guy did. Maybe even worse.
