  • wear your ppe

  • what about firefighters who go into burning buildings with the SCBA masks off....

  • Portland Fire Dept. 1980 That's the Engineer (driver/operator) of the Ladder Truck seen on fire. He lived. And he learned. 15 years later at a fire training seminar, this video played to hundreds of firefighters in attendance. The instructor asked the audience members for their reactions. The responses were much as are posted here. The speaker then announced: "Well I'm the idiot it that video and I'm here to teach you everything I learned".

And it was much more than just PPE and SCBA.

  • Even with our proper PPE we still aren't invincible. Should never let your guard down, not even for one second.

  • DerdaDer.....

  • the fire WAS predictable, when u vent unburnt gases into an oxygen supply you will get a flash occur, Triangle of fire fuel/ heat/O2, and where was the ground operator who could of easily swung the ladder to clean air(or dont u guys think of that also)

  • What on earth was this man thinking.........

Firefighters are no superman like the comic.

Wear your protective clothing at all times and remember guys....expect the unexpected...all the time. As you can see he was totally surprised by the unpredictable fire.

    Be save outthere

  • Turnout gear and scba exist for a reason.....to keep your ass alive! Use it idiot!

  • retard fire class 101 wear your PPE

  • Ok if you're going topside you need an scba. If this happens and your not in full gear you won't be able to get away uninjured. And for the iron lung dumbasses that love to breathe smoke, have fun with that unoperable lung cancer.

  • omg, the screaming....

  • we wear $3,000 worth of gear for a reason... USE IT!!!

  • Forget the fact he didnt have a SCBA on,he didnt even appear to have a frigging jacket or hood on!

  • @CyanoticFuture

Yes were only transitioned over to full bunker gear two years ago

  • PPE!

  • why we all talking about CABA/SCBA................. where the hells the firefighters tunic/flashhood

  • How in the world did this man decide to climb that ladder with the intention to ventilate without full PPE? Unbelievable!

  • this is what makes firefighters look like they dont know what there doing

  • all PPE all the time!! even scba. i don't think they know that was going to happen. if they did know, think would have all PPE!!!! better safe then sorry. that's why fire fighters get hurt all the time. not respecting their PPE's. and really dint care if your a senior fire fighter either.

  • Just like the sea or the sky.... fire is unforgiving. Man oh man...did this guy learn that the hard way. I saw this in rookie school nearly 25 years ago and it still gives me the heebie-geebies. Keep safe out there!

  • i was once told by a veteran FireFighter..(the day i begin to not be nervous or scared on a fire is the day i should retire and i thank him for telling me that...

  • @post20wilson amen

  • smart move, looks a little painful, no way you'd get me up that ladder without gear

  • THATS FUCKIN PAIN!!!

  • Blaster40: of couse rookies know better. It's fresh in their head and they are on the ball. This always happens to seasoned veterans that get too comfortable. I'm not an ol timer yet but I have made minor (thank god) mistakes due to getting comfortable. I try to remind myself all the time to be overly cautious.

  • Things like this happen when we get too comfortable with our job & assume everything in mundane or just like "the last time". Poor guy , no one deserves that, but still...we gotta becareful and learn from this.

  • Well said fireresq, most of these guys weren't even born when this happened. But it still happens today. This was one of the first firefighter safety videos I ever saw, back in the early eighties.

  • para algo se inventaron los sacos!!!

  • Who is the idiot that allowed him to go up the ladder without turnout gear ? Our rookies know better than that !!

    Where are the officers ?

  • @blaster40 It is these videos from years past that make not wearing proper PPE seem rediculous. We have the luxury of learning from there mistates. Of course when this type of stuff happens today... you just have to shake your head.

  • from great words from my instructor...

"The day u think u know it all, Retires, cause ur going to kill your self or your firefighter brother"

witch is true. who ever was in command should of stoped him.. the guy behind him. should of stoped him.. the equipment is there... USE IT..

  • jtditto this man disrespected him self by not wearing full PPE and not having a SCBA. so shut the fuck up about respect. you want it do the fucking job right

  • Great you all know about PPE. You all get gold stars. Now go learn what it is to be a Jake and show some class without posting know it all garbage here and disrespecting this man.

  • Just the other day they showed us this video in my training class. They said this is why the US looses more firefighters than any other country. People think they know it all. Well never happened before, wont happen this time. very very stupid.

  • Chilling screams

  • Not very respectable talk for a fellow Jake. Show some class.

  • we're only human. We all have momentary judgement gaps, it was very stupid what he did. Could of been a Canadian firefighter too. Our counrties run the same type of rigs.

  • They used this video back in 1990 when I first became a firefighter to show "what happens" when you act stupid.

  • PPE it will save your life

  • How in the fuck can this guy go up without his turnout gear on is beyond me... too hot that day... overconfidence.. been around the block a time or 2.

Before I even saw the outcome, I was wondering WTF those guys are doing climbing to the roof with 1/2 their gear on, and no bottles.

  • As a Chicago Truck co. member, we carry no SCBA to the roof. But we make sure all proper PPE is on.

  • why?

  • Were not required to have them on during roof operations. As long as we have on all proper PPE. But we dont carry SCBAs up top with us.

  • there is smoke up there?

  • The smoke only appears once the roof is vented.

  • windows?! and why would you be going up there w/o one ? venting the roof? you need one for tht

  • Our standard operating procedure dont require us to have an SCBA for roof operations. Dont know why, thats how it is written for us.

  • Seems stupid to me. Why would you not take SCBA? Smoke and heat rises doesn't it?

  • Ok, then tell that to the Chicago Fire dept. See what they tell you! I dont see the reason to have an SCBA up top, were outside, even if were sourrounded by smoke we still have outside air to breath. So I dont see the need for us to have them topside.

  • Okay that was officially the stupidest thing I have ever heard anybody say. Whatever.

  • Kiss my ass!!

  • @RTD8481 are you stupid or something there is thing called smoke inhalation

  • @RTD8481

You just saw the reason to have you SCBA on when going to the roof, one good deep breath of smoke and your done for, why take the chance.

  • @RTD8481 if your surrounded by smoke then all your going to breathe is smoke.

  • @RTD8481 Yea and wasnt chicago fd one of the last dept.to stop using 3/4 boots as opposed to full length suspender trousers....?

  • We don't use them in DC either. I've never seen anyone on the roof with one. Especially because its the driver and tillerman that go to the roof and they are usually the senior guys on the truck.

  • Nasty!

  • MooRon!

  • thats why you where yuor FULL P.E.E guys

  • I mean P.P.E

  • I first saw this 22 years ago, and it still goes all over me. To those who are calling him this and that, research the incident. Yes, it was a stupid mistake, and he paid for it. He was not trying to be a hero, and he is not a stupid man. For those interested, it was in Beaverton O. around 1980 or so. Please correct me if I have the dates wrong.

    Kent

  • anyone who would go up there not protected is stupid and so was the officer in charge for letting him do it

  • Ever done anything stupid in your career? I know I have in my 22 years.....he just got caught in a big way. You are right though, the IC or SO should have stopped this. I'm glad they put this on here...reminds one of his or her own mortality. Kc

  • yeah there have been moments when i have thought why did i do that but i cant imagine why you would go up there withouth at least a coat on i know it was a different time but this just blows my mind

  • That's what you get for not wearing your jacket you dumb fuck!

    That'll learn ya!

  • nice PPE

  • Why are all of these videos with dumb firefighters alaways American?

  • Why are all the videos from other countries showing all their FF's standing around?

  • watch?v=6Lwfxfiy5mI

  • I must try that myself and see what happens, like run into a burning structure with only a T-shirt on. "Oh yeah, I'm a firefighter. I'm hard as nails" - Clever stuff that is. That is the EPITOME of stupid... Would you go to war wearing no body armour...? I think not... Idiot...

If this guy was or IS a fulltime f/f he is a disgrace to the job

One thing to remember "There are no dead heroes", and you only get one set of lungs, and more importantly, one life. Remember that

  • @markthebusman Buddy, what difference does it make if he is full time or not. 80% of firefighters are volunteers, and we do a damn good job. Hell, I've worked with paid guys on the same fire. We both share the same responsibilities and risks, only difference is we do it for FREE. Yes this man made a mistake, we all have. Also remember this is 30 years ago. The industry has changed alot since. I hope to be a paid FF one day, but I will continue to volunteer, hell, even the career FF's need heros.

  • I remember watching this in the Academy. He served his purpose for us Recruits, and I am sure many many others. His wife must have chewed him worse than all the e-comments and classroom comments since haha

Its the basics that will kill you.

  • Still sends chills down my spine. Just hearing the screams of the fireman in pain. He was no doubt very stupid for not donning his gear. He learned a very hard, painful lesson. Im sure he wont forget this fire. We were shown this clip in the fire academy and you can hear the reactions of my fellow fire recruits. I never forgot this video since the first time I saw it. As a truck member this is always in the back of mind.

  • so stupid

  • Chilling scene

  • Isnt it a NFPA stander to have your PPE

    already don at the incident!?

  • What is supposed to be and what is are very far apart sometimes. Not making excuses, but its reality. He was a statistic that day

  • Thats the exact reason before I get on or off the rig , I mean what the hell it would have only taken a couple secs to don his bunker coat but know he had to learn the hard way. I bet he learned his lesson after that.

  • ummm yea wow...... thats all i can say raelly other then WHAT THE HELL DO WE HAVE GEAR FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!jack ass

  • My thoughts exactly. What an ars.

Lets take that extra second or so to gear up.

Common sense people. If you don't have common sense then why be a firefighter or anything involving deadly situations?

  • It doens't take much to catch fire fighters, volunteers and paid guys, making poor choices. Take a look at the news every day. Pretty soon you'll notice guys walking into buring buildings witout air, or trying to escape a situation without full PPEs on.

  • If I remember correctly, the actual flames never got near him. It was radiant heat that ignited his shirt. He can actually be seen turning away from the flashover to get back on the ladder. Always wear your turnout gear. (Now known as PPE!!!).

  • This is the most graphic vid I've seen that shows the need for putting on all the PPE every time. Holy Crap.

  • por algo se usa el uniforme

    ke idiota

el unico culpable de sus lesiones es el

  • what a jackass

  • wow, what a effing moron, always wear your PPE!!!!

  • were the hell was his PPE jacket. that shit aint just for decoration.

  • This was in Beaverton, OR at the Beaverton High School fire.

  • we were shown this video in FF1...on what NOT to do...

  • these guys give us job security-i bet workers comp dont pay and should not-

  • asshole

  • trottel..im Hemd, wohl die Jacke vergessen?

  • Where the hell was his PPE, he's in a tee shirt tooo!!Why on earth wasnt a hose directed on him! total fuck up! He's probably a chief now

  • DAMN......and tell me again how we killed 115 firefighters again last year???????DUHHHHHHHHH

  • no PPE? Well he was asking for trouble really!

(pardon my limited compassion but, I thought he did a very good vocal impression off a live piglet on a spit)

  • wtf... y doesnt he have his coat and other gear on with that bad of a fire

his gear and especially pack would have saved him alot of pain

and do they even have a charged line?

  • We were shown this at morris county academy too, was a great (though horrible and unfortunate to the firefighter) example to all of us

  • this was shown at the st. louis county fire academy our first day in class

  • Ditto at the DOD Fire School!!!!

  • This video should be shown at EVERY fire academy in the country. And, it should be shown to veteran firefighters periodically as a reminder. Any, even a momentary, lapse in judgement or let down of your guard, can result in getting burned like this guy did. Maybe even worse. We all need to remember, none of us want to send home an engine with an empty seat because we felt we were to badass to wear our gear.

  • idiot. was that a telesquirt or what? no charged line up there?

  • Another fine demonstration for the wearing of FULL PPE (including SCBA).

  • This guy should never hav even been on the ladder without his PPE. The line officer on the scene should have known this. If he were a line officer he should have known better and set a better example for the others on scene.

  • Where the hell is this guy's PPE???

  • All you guys are talking about is ladder placement and attention to the fire. This man should have been wearing FULL PPE/SCBA, and have been on air.

  • Ladder placement is key.

  • A little not well known info: considering that this particular fire was burning for approx. 2 hours and the roof was a one-ply, what the heck were any of them going up to a truss roof of a gymnasium of a school for anyway. What ever happened to the 5 minutes and write it off thinking

  • when I was a rookie 15 years ago they showed this film, that's all it took for me to learn that you never let down your guard.

  • I think all of the other comments have covered the stupidity factor so I'm not going to add to it. Can't wait to show this vid to some of the cowboys I know!!!!!

  • U mean numbnuts going up w/o turnout gear!

  • hmmm, retardville, USA!!!

  • He goes up with no jacket, he comes down on fire. Simple message for me.

  • I first saw this video in 1985, and it still gives me chills. Always,ALWAYS be prepaired for the worst, and you will go home the same way you came in to work.

  • Dumbass award

  • Ever heard of "Gearing Up"?

  • weres the coat seriously come on guys

  • I know this guy's name, and department, but i won't go into that. But I was told in a fire safty officer's class that this guy got caught in ANOTHER fire without gear and was burned again. Re-think your choice of jobs, bud!

  • at school they told us 1 simple thing SAFETY even on a simple call.. like a car on fire.... like a Electric cable on the street GET ALL YOUR GEAR ALL OF IT

  • i can not beleive these guys. no ppe. WHO was I.C. people this isn't put on here for entertainment, i hope. hope someone will learn from this. STUPID-STUPID-STUPID. REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARNED.

  • No PPE means no protection. Always think Safety Brothers & Sisters, Always!

  • i remeber this in training also..in what not to do..freaking lax with no gear

  • This video is over twenty years old. But don't think we shouldn't learn from it. We are doomed to repeat the past if we don't learn from it.

  • all i can say is shit. but if he had his ppe on he would of had prowtection. this is some thik that macks me mad seeing fire fighters with out there gear on.

  • Thats one stupid firefighter...and an even MORE stupid group of officers that didnt chew him out for STARTING to climb the ladder withought full turnout gear.

  • why ppe was inveted for us in case soemthing like this happnes

  • Jesus feel so sorry for him, but you get PPE WEAR IT. Its there to protect us...

  • I believe I saw this in my firefighter 1 class. Notice that he didn't have adequate PPE. Wear your protective gear!

  • yeah i saw it in my fire class.

dont know why the fuck you would go on the roof with out any kit on. the guy seriously is lucky to even survive. freakn idiot
