this only tells the fastest motion. the velocity when earth moving on axis during the day which is the slowest when adding up the speed in orbital year did not tell :3 simple enough : speed of orbit - speed of axis [3-2=velocity we travel during the day]. but the earth is tilted 23. so the velocity 2+3 cannot achieve 70402.3 to be exact. but earth orbit is in egg shape. the closer the earth to the sun more faster. calculation to be exact is always plus minus and very complicated to explain. =D

I like Mark Twains method in the Capt. Eli Stormfields ... book. Hitch a ride on a large metalic asteroid that travels to the outer solar system. Hollow out enough for living. Manafacture effecient atomic ion motors using the mined ores and other parts from earth. Then you use the mass of the asteroid for fuel. As you hollow it out you get more interior space. This is a massive exaggeration... nearby stars are practically stationary relative to our sun because of the scale of the galaxy. On massive cosmic timescales, ofcourse stars with different orbital radii/inclinations will drift relative to the sun, but thats not a problem for any reasonable interstellar travel, even a few centuries "generation ship" wouldnt have a problem with this.

I'm sure that by the time we manage to achieve inter-stellar/galactic space travel we'd have powerful enough navigational computers to calculate the way back based on some sort of inter-galactic navigational charts. Nevertheless, unlike, say Star Trek, I think the more probable mode of transport would be via some sort of inter-stellar/galactic tunnel/short-cut. I'm sure we'd have to think about many more problems, e.g. where do you anchor the other end of the tunnel?

@Vildahallon Sorry. I hit the reply to soon. It is also relative motion. You don't just step off the planet and it speeds past you. You are also traveling the same speed as the planet. So it's easy to get to the moon. just add a bit more velocity and attitude to you vector. Taking that into account we can easily travel through out the solar system, but outside that distance is almost impossible because you loose fix point position with distance.
But still whatever point of reference you chose to end on will also be moving and that process will go on indefinitely. Which is what Einstein pointed out with relativity that the only real point of reference in space is YOU, the only thing that doesnt move.

The author of the video forgot to break his physics problem down into two different problems.
You just need to know the vector velocity of the sun(and that's a real problem btw).

This is a massive exaggeration... nearby stars are practically stationary relative to our sun because of the scale of the galaxy. On massive cosmic timescales, ofcourse stars with different orbital radii/inclinations will drift relative to the sun, but thats not a problem for any reasonable interstellar travel, even a few centuries "generation ship" wouldnt have a problem with this.

Honest question about this proposed cumulative velocity. How can all these vectors in various directions be combined into a total figure? Sometimes these vectors don't compliment each other. For example, If a train is traveling 100km/h and I am walking towards the caboose at 10km, my total velocity is not 110km/h, but 90k/m. Adding perpendicular velocity to this makes no sense either.

I'm not worried, because after about 30 years the average computer will be more intelligent than the entire human population.
Also if we got to the moon with a computer as powerful as today's average calculator, then I think that by the time we can warp the space-time fabric (needed for faster than light travel) the computing abilities of our A.I. should be able to handle the vast amount of calculations involved.

Personally I believe that we could eventually develop computers which would find them a doddle. this clip doesnt make much sense.
we're tied to earths speed, and gravity. if we wernt, we'd be flung out into space as earth moves. like pulling a table cloth, and glasses etc remains.
if im on a train that moves 1mile/sec, and i jump for 1sec, i'll still be on the train, not 1 mile away, when i land. if we move outside earths gravity, we're still stuck to the suns gravity, and orbit the sun, like the earth. so earth wont just zip away from us as soon as we leave its gravity field.

This is sort of misleading in that although the speeds listed seem high not when you compare them to the distances between the planets, stars and Galaxies. the change is quite small over time. so unless you go fora long time out and 1000s of light years from Earth would you then begin to get concerned.

wOw that is an amazing reality to think that we are actually adapted to feel like we are still. It does tell us that we can not always rely on our perceptions. No wonder we occasionally feel off balance. Difficult to believe that NAsa could actually ever overcome so many variables and make interstellar space travel possible. I'm sure that by the time we manage to achieve inter-stellar/galactic space travel we'd have powerful enough navigational computers to calculate the way back based on some sort of inter-galactic navigational charts. Nevertheless, unlike, say Star Trek, I think the more probable mode of transport would be via some sort of inter-stellar/galactic tunnel/short-cut. I'm sure we'd have to think about many more problems, e.g. where do you anchor the other end of the tunnel?

You said there were 6 directions the Earth is moving. That's enough information to calculate in a 3D space where the Earth is, where it was and a projection of where it will be. We also have to remember that when you jump inside of a train you don't get taken to the back of the car at however fast the train is moving. If a space ship appears to have stopped, it's still at least moving as fast the galaxy in 2 ways, the spin and the direction it's moving. Nice vid tho, reminds me of Monty Python.

@Vildahallon Sorry. I hit the reply to soon. It is also relative motion. You don't just step off the planet and it speeds past you. You are also traveling the same speed as the planet. So it's easy to get to the moon. just add a bit more velocity and attitude to you vector. Taking that into account we can easily travel through out the solar system, but outside that distance is almost impossible because you loose fix point position with distance.

This is all assuming that Einstein's theory of space/time holds; His theories of gravitation are indisputable, not not his concept of space/time which I think for various reasons is flawed. He reduced time to space through its measurement; Kant in the 18th century stated that time and space have no objective reality but are intuitions. I am not a scientist, but a philosopher.
