Mysteriesforhire is a clever little devil! He's right of course - I am amazed he knows so much about the band. There were no brass parts on the album and they never played live like that either. They were in my humble opinion, the best band of that era and if it were not for a strike at the BBC one week when they should have played News at Ten on Top of the Pops, they could have been the household name they deserved to be. Harry150li knows his stuff too!! Great to know the band is still loved.
@iwanther kinda right there were two mixes released of this song the LP version had guitars in the "solo" section" the single release had a Sax insert..great song either way from a brilliant band saw them play live 3 times
probably the ONLY band i ever saw more than once...!! three times in the NYC area...81' or 82'...they were playing Jimmie Jones which had not yet been released on the album Magnets...truly one of the GREAT 'post-punk' bands.I've been hearing their sound copied and borrowed from by many bands over the years...but they've never been quite equalled !!
The first gig I ever went to, The Vapors playing in Guildford. I was SO in love with Dave Fenton, lmao! I was 14 years old and got drunk on the train coming home. All I remember is throwing up in the kitchen sink with my mum yelling "you've fallen off your pedestal now my girl, you've fallen off your pedestal now!" Happy days. :)
This version was released as the single in the U.K. My guess is that it was re-recorded when they did the album. IMHO the bass line is better, but that is what's so great about the days of the 45.... you get something extra. There's even freakin sax line in there at the end. YIKES!!!!!
Hey thanks for posting this, I haven't seen this video in ages and bought the LP back then for this song as well. I enjoy Letter From Hero too. The 80's rock.
I just got "vaporized" the cd with both their albums on it, I can't stop listning to new clear days they had loads of great songs on it, magnets wasent as good though. this song shoulda been a number 1.
80's radio stations were so reluctant to play new wave the vapors got left out. only mtv started playing turning japanese. that's why we know that song
This was a band that really had potential, damn they were great. Turning japanese, Jimmie Jones, and anything off their album Magnets. i really had high hopes for you guys. best of all to the Vapors!
David Fenton: The only person in history to have ever made a mullet look cool. Saw them in Atlanta in the 80's - one of the best gigs ever. Is there a video for "Prisoner Number 1"? If so, someone please post it!
True, this is a different version. I bought the album when it first came out. lol! I'm of the opinion that they were the progenitors of grunge, and that the mainstream wasn't ready yet. These guys never got the credit that they deserved.
Great song. I had the biggest crush on Fenton when I was a teenager. He had the coolest look.

I notice that this has more instruments than the album version (New Clear Days).
Is this an alternate track?
mysteriesforhire 1 year ago
@mysteriesforhire
Yep, this was released by 45 single as well after the album. The song had been re-recorded with horn sections etc, as you noticed.

I was the lucky enough to be the 100th person to join the Vapors fan club, and got to see and meet the band at The Marquee in Wardour Street..
One of the band said to me "I KNOW YOU!!!!!!"
It transpiored that I sold him a ticket every day at Belsize Park station on the northern line!!
What a small world!!
The Vapors is and always will be one of my favourite bands.
